No Browser Eating Rickrolls!

Postby Jack Saladin » Fri Dec 07, 2007 12:43 am UTC

OK, some of you seem to have discovered the wonder that is browser crashing Rick Roll links. I'm going to have to lay out a couple of ground rules here:

1) Infinite Javascript popups and window resizing isn't actually funny. Like, at all.
2) You'll get banned for it! That is kinda funny.

You will get banned. Is it worth it? Really? C'mon.

From now on there's no excuse; you've been warned in this topic. So it'll definitely be perma-bans only.

Can you post a warning about that in the "Trolling" thread? I just screwed myself over by not being awake enough to hover over each link before I clicked even though I knew it was there. (*slaps self on wrist*)

In the "Discuss this comic" thread for "Trolling", some people were posting links to not just Rickrolls (which are Okay), but to "Infinite Rickrolls" or simillar such things: Cursor evading, constant java-window poping, music playing windows, who could only really be 'defeated' by Ctrl-alt-delete Force-ending. At least, that was the case with me.

Some people apparently didn't think this crossed the line from "Funny" to "Asshole"/"Mean-and-not-funny", and, well, the mods (and a lot of other people, it seems.. myself included) appear to disagree.

Guys, our global announcement threads really aren't for discussion. They are for announcing things, and they are only left open in case people have questions pertaining to the announcement. We know these sites are arseholish, which is the whole point of implementing this. We do not really need any further discussion on the matter, okay? Please keep this to requests for clarification of the rule and/or its consequences.

EDIT: Mod pen'd.

... I'm not even talking about the ones in the Rick Roll related thread, all the links I've seen have been in just regular threads where someones decided to be a dickhead. And no, many of them cannot be stopped just by closing the window or clicking OK a few times.

If you don't like the rules here, you're more than welcome to find somewhere else to post. This is a privately run and owned forum. You do not pay to use it. You have no rights other than the right to leave.

i thought it was a song LOL

It's the act of tricking someone into having Rick Astley's 1987 hit, "Never Gonna Give You Up," play on their computer. Apparently some people have taken it to extremes, combining the song with annoying "open-a-million-popups" joke pages. I dunno; I learned back in the days of goatse not to open a link I didn't trust.

In an effort to make some of the thicker skulls comprehend why such links are a bad thing -

Many people on these fora browse from work. They've been here long enough to have an idea where they should and should not go. Being tricked into clicking a link can screw up your work day. Maybe a boss walks by and wonders why Rick Astley is all over the monitor. Maybe you have multiple tabs open that now have to get closed. The latter is actually how I browse the fora all the time - with maybe 10 tabs at once going.

Also, don't be a dick.

We do this for free with a limited amount of people, so we're not going to be mounting an Intention Investigation into every link posted. If you post something that obviously was a trick - posting in an irrelevant thread with "Yeah, I think this explains it better" and something stupid in the link or whatever, you're risking being caught up in this rule. As was mentioned, just Don't Be A Dick. There are plenty of places on the internet you can Rick Roll to your hearts content, it's not going to kill you to refrain from doing it here, mmkay?

Advice for those who have firefox:

Get the add-on NoScript from the addons page, immediately. You will never be Script-rolled again. Unless you make the mistake of allowing scripts on the wrong page.

The real question is what happens if Randall does it. It's not like the head administrator can be banned...

You clearly do not know davean.

This hasn't been a problem for a while, so I've un-Anouncement-ed it. If anyone disagrees, just stick it back up. :D

I had to ban someone a week or two ago for this exact thing. I think it's still relevant
