In case no one is going to say it, this saddens me.

Yes, me too.
He's always existed as a celebrity in my life and it's rather strange him being dead.
So close to a new tour too, I think.

The news is still at this stage jumping from 'in a coma', to 'dead' and back again. I guess we sit and wait

News says he was DOA.

The death of a legend. No matter how creepy or molestery he was in recent years, he was still a badass performer and musician :(

Man, Farrah Fawcett, MJ, and David Carradine. I'm going to cry!

*grumbles* Stupid initials...

The greatest contemporary example of "Fame can go to your head" has now become a chilling cautionary tale. As unpopular as it is for a guy to express this opinion, I thought he was an awesome singer (even if the songs sucked for a few... decades.)

On the one hand I'm saddened that he died.

On the other hand I can't help it but feel proud that I got to know about it before most of my friends.

Well, not to belittle anyone's memories of him, but I remember Bad being released, and Thriller was constant in my life up until then (I was born the year it was released). So I've always thought of him as a pop singer and an artist, rather than a celebrity. Every time I saw the craziness and the media stuff I was always thinking that the man was a faller star, rather than the pathetic figure he has cut lately.
I knew a woman once, but she died soon after.

When I was young, well, it was him that got me into music, and gave me a better message than anyone else did at that time.

I'm.. I'm really gutted.

Just..wow. When I was just a little one I would walk up the the TV and say "Wiwwie, Wiwwie" repeatedly due to Free Willy and Michael Jackson's song I have always thought of as part of Free Willy.

Dang..I feel awful for his family. No kid should have to lose their father at such a young age.. :(

It would be terrible icky karma is people were celebrating... I wonder how the children and parents of the possible molestation feel..:S

I have to admit, this is kind of weird. I'm not an uber-huge fan of his, but some of his best songs are on my iTunes....

Really sad day in the entertainment world, it must be said.

Haha coincidentally I have that comic on my desktop.

But still, it's a bit shocking to see such a famous person pass away at such an early age.
I mean I would be lying if I said I'd miss him. Because he hasn't done much lately anyway, he will be remembered for what he did in the 80s.
But damn, death caused by cardiac arrest at 50 is different from age-related death at 70. It makes you feel vulnerable, seeing such a famous person pass away under such circumstances.

<3 you guys.
I'm not really a Jackson fan, but I'm not opposed to him either.
I'm so very, very glad that you guys aren't saying that it's a good thing he died, because he is some vile monster or something. Not that I suspected such a thing from such a fine forum. I never believed the accusations myself, but I wouldn't be too surprised if they were true either. But I believe strongly in evidence and not thinking in groupthought, so I presumed he was innocent until proven guilty. Either way, he was certainly had a troubled soul, and may not have understood boundaries well. I don't think this makes him a bad person; just a person who needed help (regardless of whether the accusations are true or false--I think they are false, really).
But yeah. I kinda liked him, despite the whole not-liking-his music thing. Ben was good.

It was kinda weird. I've never really listened to his music - the only songs of his I know are "Beat It," "Smooth Criminal," and "Thriller" but I kinda gasped and felt odd when I read the news. I think it's because he's always been around since I was alive, and has always been at the periphery of my pop-cultural world.

I was born in 82, Michael Jackson was sort of a memorable figure that was always around during my childhood. His 80s music had a large impact on my older cousin (and we've got photographic proof of his smooth criminal days).

What I remember most was listening to the Jackson Five on oldies radio for most of my childhood (my mother didn't like 80s music). I remember ABC 123 and The Love you Save the way some of my peers remember new kids on the block. His death is jarring for me, but his current persona is so divorced from his childhood too. He really was a troubled man--but he made some great music and influences dance to this day.

This makes me sad.

One of my friends had the best Facebook status though: "I don't mean to incite a panic, but if his work has taught me anything, it's that there's a very real chance he will be reanimated as a zombie. He'll probably have zombie friends with strong zombie-dancing resumes as well."

Oh i've already BEEN here all night. It's now three in the morning and this is a brief summary of the Jokes me and a friend (well, mostly one) have come up with and posted as status updates on Facebook.
Staffan Ankardal We should have known he wasn't feeling well, he was looking pale for years!

Richard Pipe Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart. No wait...

Oscar Jilsén MJ is dead. Looks like his heart couldn't... BEAT IT

Richard Pipe *Insert Farrah Fawcett is dead joke here* The one thing worse than a celebrity dying is a celebrity dying on the same day that someone more famous than themselves dies too.

Richard Pipe You've Been Hit By - You've Been Struck By - An as of yet unspecified issue that resulted in cardiac arrest.

Richard Pipe Michael are You OK? So, Michael Are You OK? Are you OK Michael?

Richard Pipe Because he's dead, he's dead - come on (dead dead-really, really dead)
Comment: Sophie Monks Kaufman: and the whole wide has to answer right now, just to tell you once again, who's dead?

Staffan Ankardal It's close to miiiidnight, and you see a sight that actually stops your heart

Staffan Ankardal so he finally caught up with his Nose
Comment: Richard Pipe: He'll overtake it pretty quickly now. That shit takes centuries to decompose.

Paul Kyler so it looks like michael jackson is about to catch up with his career *ba dum dump*...okay they can't all be gems folks

Staffan Ankardal the way you make-ah me Keel (the way you make me keel!) the way you turn me off...

Staffan Ankardal When thinking about your nephew, oh fuck all I'm seeings black or white

I was never a huge fan of his work (besides Thriller, duh), but he is the first entertainer to die that I have known the name of before they died... Yes, I am that far out of popular culture... if this had been Jimmy Buffet, on the other hand, I would probably be in a deep depression right about now.

I think there's a real difference in perception of him from generation to generation.

For me (17) he's just this... creepy old dude that I thought would always be there.
