1157: "Sick Day"

Postby rhomboidal » Mon Jan 07, 2013 5:36 am UTC

Title Text: Wikipeida path: Virus -> Immune system -> Innate immune system -> Parasites -> List of parasites of humans -> Naegleria fowleri -> Primary amoebic meningoencephalitis -> Deciding I DEFINITELY shouldn't connect an aquarium pump to my sinuses

If it helps, maybe try thinking of parasites as bad-ass pets.

Uniquely applicable, for once:

I'm surprised this is a legit sick activity day. I was kind of expecting a BHG chart.

My present pie chart is dominated by "groaning" and "fruitlessly moving between various ineffective comforts and distractions"

What the House episode "Euphoria" (I think it's Season 1) - it's a 2 part episode. It features this disease (it's inaccurate and hopelessly optimistic at the end, but hey, it's motivation to read the article).

You know, I'm surprised. I searched for the page, I checked the deletion log, but apparently nobody has yet made the Wikipedia page at the very end of the path ... :D

If that cartoon reflects current experience: Get well soon!

And for the record: I WON'T follow that Wikipedia path.

Just created and account to say:

I've done that (pump to sinuses)... helps a little at the start... but after a while the pressure changes and other stuff makes you feel funny...

I always wanted to have Toxoplasmosis, since I love sci-fi and find the idea of having a parasite in my brain, influencing my actions, totally awesome. Of course, given my attitude (and the fact I love cats), I probably already have it.

Randall must be really, deathly, ill to have sunk so low as to use a pie chart.

Really -- let's see a stacked distribution chart over a time scale, at least!
Or a 3D contour plot with body temperature and total exudate as the x and y axes, and "alleged productivity" as the dependent variable.

The idea of some ameba eating my brain is scary, but not enough to outplace my fear of a bear attack in as my top-scary way of dying.

Also, that army of fighting critters of yours don't look so awesome now, eh, Wikipedia-reading sick Randall?

Reading this comic while scrolling down the RSS Reader, I initially read it without seeing the bottom two lines.
As you might imagine, I was a bit concerned about Randall's thought processes.

Ha, I am sick too, so naturally I was reading about Naegleria Fowleri a couple days ago. Just innocently googled "neti pots"! *shudder shudder*

I think of my body as being a Romanesque empire and the germs as being like barbarians.

Yeah occasionally there's some scary hemorrhagic huns that could burn it to the ground, and yeah eventually my decadence and the passage of time will lead to inevitable decline and fall, but most of the wars my body fights against illnesses are short, very one-sided and my body absolutely destroys its enemy with only a slight upset if any to my equilibrium, and it learns from the experience and develops defenses against future invasions.

More interesting is the pie chart of Sick day activities after you've gotten over the sickness and now have the day to do as you will.

Now I have to reconsider whether to use the Ayr kit my doctor recommended.

Simple summary: when swimming in a natural body of water in a warm climate (which may soon include the Midwestern United States...), wear a nose clip. And don't ever snort unboiled lake/pond/river/ocean water up your nose. Just don't do it.

Apparently someone actually makes and sells a pump for your sinuses: http://dev.hydromedonline.com/shop/index.php/hydro-pulse.html. On one hand, the idea of hooking a pump up to my sinuses is mildly horrifying... on the other hand, I kind of want one of these.
