skeptical scientist wrote:Yes, he did cite a source for Hogwarts' annual cost (link).

However, I'm rather peeved that he cited a Daily Mail article rather than the original source—a post on a blog run by Lehigh University's Economics Society.

Brilliant! Yes, it shows Randall up for citing the DM, but also shows just how lazy the Mail themselves are with their reporting. All their figures are in USD, even though the original works in GBP. This means they got the story from an american report about it and they couldn't be bothered either to trace the source back or even convert back to their native currency...

Important to note that the Barenaked Ladies are a Canadian band, so they're really singing about 1 million Canadian dollars.

Think I found a typo: "Ronald Laudner" (under billionaires -> fashion) should probably be "Ronald Lauder". I couldn't find anything interesting for a Google search for "ronald laudner" or "ronald laudner billionaire". "Lauder" would be the son of Estee Lauder and CEO of the cosmetics giant bearing her name.

Last digit on The Millionaire film has been added, but is incorrect.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Millio ... 31_film%29

The film opened in 1931, not 1933.

Typos: In the Dollars subsection, under Dinner for four, only 23 squares are shaded for the McDonalds meal. The cost is listed as $27.89, so either an incorrect figure is given or an incorrect number of squares are shaded.

Amazing, epic "comic" if it can be called that. Maybe make and sell posters?

One correction I did not see in the forum already: Fannie Mae has a profit listed but I think it should be a loss.

Great stuff, keep it up.

Damn you! Now I have Pink Floyd stuck in my head. Of course, that's not such a bad thing. You could have mentioned "It's a Small World After All"

or even worse...

Barry Manilow's "Copacabana."

I wonder how much money those have made??

Depends on which transliteration you're using. Have you ever seen the list of how many ways the western media spelled "Qaddafi?"

If this were wikixkcd, we could go in and *really* crowdsource the corrections... but it's probably for the best that we can't. ;)

A few more typo (excuse me, tyop) corrections:
  • "Appalacia" should be "Appalachia" in the coal costs section
  • The external costs of coal are the same as the base costs ($117b) but look like they should be bigger, around $250b.
  • "Russian" should be "Russia" in the trillions section under "Europe"
  • Is there a missing label on the trillions graph with fed/US/rest of world? It's not clear if that's debt or GDP or what.
  • The boxes that outline various income levels (poverty level, etc) on the income pool chart appear to be offset upwards by a row or so, lining through the bottom couple rows of each quintile.

These have been mentioned already, but just in case:
  • "mildlle" should be "middle" under the income pool
  • the Civil War label and number is in the wrong place under costs of war; the alignment of the brackets on some of the wars (Revolutionary, etc) are a little off.

Awesome infographic, thanks again!

Of interest: The Japan Earthquake/Tsunami is not expected to overtake the 2010/11 Christchurch earthquakes (not included in chart at all) as the world's costliest insurance event, since the percentage of property which is insured in Japan is very low, and in New Zealand is very high. Most figures for Christchurch have focused on repair costs but not loss of production.

Typos etc., excluding ones already posted:

In the "Millions" part of the poster, "Buri Khalifa" should be "Burj Khalifa".

Under Leonardo's Codex Leicester, there should be a space between "by" and "Bill", and also a close paren.

There's a block of $355 billion to the right of "Total spending on primary and secondary education in the US" that doesn't have a label.

The label "Medicaid" is placed too low, assuming it indicates the ghosted part of "Government".

Does US spending on all cancer treatment include the spending on lung cancer treatment? If so, maybe the lung cancer blocks should be made part of the "all cancer" blocks; if not, maybe the label should say "US spending on all other cancer treatment".

Some of the blocks in "Video game industry revenue" are vertically and horizontally offset. Why?

The rule of thumb paragraph about hurricanes and terrorism should be moved up to be adjacent to the blocks for 9/11 losses. Also, that paragraph says "....rule exists for to terrorism."

Under "US household income", it says (redundantly) "$2 trillion dollars".

"Incl. Russian and Turkey" should be "Incl. Russia and Turkey".

Unviewable in Android phones. Ok with the alt text, but now i can‘t view the picture at all. Someone should give Randall a touchscreen smartphone/tablet so that he realizes how crap his site looks in those devices.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y110/D ... hart-1.png

It's the value of an investment of $1000/year after however many years, not of $1000. In other words, if you save $1,000 every year, and invest it in a retirement fund earning 5% annual interest, how much will it be worth after so many years of saving, investing, and earning interest?

For example, the $5,526 after 5 years represents the total of five investments of $1,000 each (one per year), together with the interest: $215.50 on the first deposit, $157.62 on the second, $102.50 on the third, and $50 on the fourth. (The last deposit hasn't had a chance to earn interest yet.)

This sort of scheme gives a reasonable mathematical model for how most people invest their money, e.g. annual contributions to a retirement account. Of course most people saving for retirement wouldn't make identical contributions every year, but it's a better model than a single initial deposit plus compound interest.

C# code to download the image and reconstruct it. Someone with a photobucket can upload the final PNG :D

Code: Select all

        static void Main(string[] args)
        {
            string pattern = "tile_001_{0:000}_{1:000}.png";
            string localpath = @"C:\xkcd_money\";

            WebClient c = new WebClient();
            for (int x = 0; x < 25; x++)
            {
                for (int y = 0; y < 17; y++)
                {
                    string filename = String.Format(pattern, x, y);
                    c.DownloadFile(String.Concat("http://imgs.xkcd.com/money_tiles7/", filename), String.Concat(localpath, filename));
                }
            }

            // get width/height
            int width = 0, height = 0;
            for (int x = 0; x < 25; x++)
            {
                Image i = Image.FromFile(String.Concat(localpath, String.Format(pattern, x, 0)));
                width += i.Width;
                i.Dispose();
            }

            for (int y = 0; y < 17; y++)
            {
                Image i = Image.FromFile(String.Concat(localpath, String.Format(pattern, 0, y)));
                height += i.Height;
                i.Dispose();
            }

            // now build image
            Bitmap result = new Bitmap(width, height);
            Graphics g = Graphics.FromImage(result);
            int curX = 0, curY = 0, tempX = 0;
            for (int x = 0; x < 25; x++)
            {
                for (int y = 0; y < 17; y++)
                {
                    Image i = Image.FromFile(String.Concat(localpath, String.Format(pattern, x, y)));
                    g.DrawImageUnscaled(i, curX, curY);
                    tempX = i.Width;
                    curY += i.Height;
                    i.Dispose();
                }

                curX += tempX;
                curY = 0;
            }

            result.Save(String.Concat(localpath, "result.bmp"));
        }

Good to see that the typos are getting fixed, but the following still exist:

$1 per US household $117,290,000,000 (3 extra 0s?)
$10 from every US household $1,179,180,000 (should be 10x above)
$1 per US resident $312,620,000
$10 from every US resident $3,326,200,000 (should be 10x above)

Just a thought: What if xkcd offered a subscription whereby people could pay maybe $15/yr to get the comics a day early? This way a smaller more dedicated audience could see and report typos a day before each comic is released to the masses.

Randy did good.
betas:
1. YEAH! Flat is not regressive, *technically*. Sloppy liberal semantics.
2. already mentioned (in first 178 posts) tradebooks don't belong in charities and the Burj Khalifa (sp?) is NOT a rap group (appears there and over in projects). Double eagle is about 6 million... lots of numbers are suspiciously identical...
3. in low income text "then it forces the average aftertax..." forces it BELOW the income level (word left out)
4. Not and error per se but any transfer of energy will have both a public health and an environmental cost. Singling out coal seems a bit un-fair, especially when othr hydrocarbon burning technologies are getting away with murder (so to speak) - but its is interesting...
5. Not an error per se, but my understanding is that the largest gold reserves are at the NY Fed, not Ft. Knox.
6. Not an error per se but my income is (I know this is moot) NOT "excluded government revenue"-- more liberal semantics. In a democracy if we pass our laws such that (as a silly example) coinage is not "taxable" while paper money is, the coinage would be excluded FROM *potential* revenue. Calling it excluded revenue is perjorative, IMHO, (and leads to sloppy thinking). It is excluded income: mine; not yours, theirs or "ours".
Sorry to quibble about vocabulary, but slogans tend to be used when rational argument fails (most of the time, eh?).

It's probably already been said, but I didn't want to read through five pages to check.

Under 'Millions', the values for 'Qianlong Chinese vase sold in 2010', 1933 Double Eagle coin' and 'Treskilling Yellow postage stamp' are all reported as being $83,710,000 though each of the pictorial representations are different.

I just wanted to post a quick note saying what a huge fan I am of this site. Today's strip pushed me over the edge to actually register and post something, but I've been a fan for a long time. I love pointing out some of these strips to my colleagues (I'm an astrophysicist in a building full of scientists, mathematicians, and engineers), but today's strip was just fantastic. Thanks!

Maybe he already knew one of the 6 things he listed under the "five things" :D

Also, Lilianne Bettencourt has a value of 23.5B, but the boxes display 35B, which would put her in the richest people were that correct.

According to this there are 312,620,000 residents of the US yet 117,290,000,000 households. It doesn't pass the sanity check for there to be many more households than residents.
