Title text: And the baby has a fever.

I giggled. Then I coughed and laughed like a man. Then I thought about other manly things, like how it would be hilarious to do something fight-clubby like replacing a bunch of thermometers with things like this.. Then I realized the repercussions of my actions, and repented because of the great return-versus-investment odds on Saturday... and my lack of a rap sheet. White collar blues..

Funny Comic. I cant decide if it is suposed to be a joke about how similar they look, or how pregnant women have a higher body temperature. Probably both, come to think of it.
EDIT: also, he's using that thermometer wrong if its making a bump on his cheek, they go under the toungue.

I wonder if you could hack a normal thermometer (with the LCD displays) to do that, and then give it to a male, and watch his reaction.

Wait, do thermometers with LCD displays exist? Or did I just make that up?

The funny thing is, you actually can find out if you are pregnant this way! My wife (a Linux using, knitting, trombing playing medical scientist) measures her temperature every morning while trying to conceive and graphs the results. By looking for patterns, she usually finds out before the preg test starts working!

See example (not hers) here:

Beaten by Chuq. *I* found out I was pregnant this way with two of my pregnancies. 'Course, I confirmed with an actual pregnancy test.

TMI for guy eyes follows in the spoilers. Don't say I didn't warn you.
Spoiler:
My cycle was consistent in that 13 days after I ovulated, my menses would start. In the early part of my cycle it would hover around 97.0-97.4 when I took a reading at 6 a.m. (barring illness) in the mornings, and spike to 97.8-98.2 during my luteal phase. So when I went to day 15 past ovulation and the Crimson Tide hadn't started rolling, I knew it was time to not break out the champagne. 'Cause alcohol is bad during pregnancy and all that.

Also, typing "my" followed by "period" results in an autoreplace of "Shark Week" on these boards, which is nifty.

In all honesty, wouldn't an effective oral pregnancy test be tremendously popular? Particularly if it were reusable?

It gets weirder. My sister did a series of pregnancy test experiments with apples, honey, glucose and sugar (among other things, with help from her buddies on the fertility board including one man who loved to drink apple juice) when hearing about a rash of false positives and someone getting a false positive leaving their pregnancy test in a glass of coke. The way most at home pregnancy tests work, the same thing that changes color in the presence of hCG also changes color in the presence of fructose.

Seems our stick invalid has been hitting the orange juice.

i guess the next logical step would be thermometers that graph daily temperature for you, you can get scales that do that already.

although the problem would be when..

I couldn't help but think of the exact same thing (basal body temp) as well. My wife and I have used a symptothermal method for years.

I came over here to wonder if he was referring to Basal Body Temperature, only to find I've been beaten to it by several posters above.

Oh well.

As several people have mentioned, a woman taking her temperature first thing in the morning before getting up can chart a pattern of highs and lows and thus determine if she is pregnant. I've had two kids and both times realized I was pregnant because of the high temps before taking a pregnancy test. Lots of scientific reasons why it works and doctors will often have women who have had problems conceiving start taking temps and charting because they can also determine other things (like problems with infertility) from the same data.

Anyone interested in this method should probably find a good book to read, such as "Taking Charge of Your Fertility" ...it's by Toni Weschler. You can search the internet and find it. Huge book and kinda dry but gives all the science and information about side benefits. I'm sure there are other books out there but haven't seen any others that give the science behind the method. Disclaimer: I was not paid to put this recommendation there, nor do I have anything to do with the people involved with the book, etc. :)

sounds like a pretty pointless exercise :D it would probably be a pretty small number, most of the time making one of the figures a girl is probably just for visual diversity, in the same way giving some figures hats is, except in the cases of romantic strips i guess, (although i suspect some of the sexual role reversals would actually add to the comic :D)

Y'see, I interpreted this comic a completely different way. I laughed because the guy in the comic just realised that he tried to take his temperature with a used pregnancy tester.
