Alt text: "Guest comic by Jeph Jacques of Questionable Content, whose internal monologue hasn't been speaking to him for the past three years."

Parody week returns... but in non-parodic form!

What, no mouseover text? Jacques maybe thinks alt text is a little beneath him?

Alt text was rendered incorrectly. It might be fixed soon.

edit: I only just got that the speechbubbles talked the entire time. That means Faye (;P) and backpack guy totally need to use their outside voices to converse :P

I like Jeph's take on the xkcd art. Also a fan of QC and wonder if he is also writing about Marten and Faye. Nice to see that Randall can reach out to his friends, and vice versa.

If I had started this thread, I would have said the title text was \none.
Also, I am glad to hear that xkcd is having guest authors and that Randall's situation is getting better. :D

Ah, good to see there is balance in the universe. Jeph breaks up a couple, and then puts a new one together. Also, I was thinking from the beginning that Bench Girl is xkcd-style Faye. Last panel sort of confirms?

Edit- Ah, ninja'd

Yeah, that's totally Faye. So who's the dude with the backpack, I wonder. Or maybe it isn't anyone at all, if he's still in school and... maybe she is too in this strip?

I'm probably missing some very obvious clue, but nonetheless I simply cannot figure out what happened. Odd, since I'm a huge fan of QC and xkcd; this strip should be the ultimate in amazingness.

I would have known it was Jeph even if it hadn't been labeled. Jeph is one of the few webcartoonists who uses lowercase letters in his comics by default.

I like it better that way, anyway. Thanks for the explanation.

They're internal monologue bubbles.

I think Jeph did a GREAT job of capturing the xkcd spirit while still being Jeph. If you have a strip like QC, guest artists can come in and use the characters--but xkcd doesn't have that many recognizable characters. So Jeph had to use something else about xkcd. And he did. I'm just not sure what it was he used.

Thought bubbles, actually... the only spoken line in the whole strip is the "Hey!" in panel 7.

Both characters see each other regularly, and have an internal monologue about each other (of which we only hear the man's, until the woman's jumps in). It's the two internal monologues that ran off together at the end, leaving the people alone.

I definitely approve of this guest comic; it really captures the xkcd spirit. A funny but bizarre metajoke for most of the comic leads to a final panel that manages to be incredibly touching without saying anything. Looking forward to the rest of the week.

I did not interpret the girl in this comic as being Faye. She has the glasses and (sorta) the hairstyle, and the "daddy issues" line is probably a reference to QC, but Faye really doesn't project the image of perfection (an occasionally recurring theme in Randall's work) that this girl does, and it's not like her to be the girl quietly sitting on the bench reading every morning.

Ironically, this comic was the source of probably my biggest RGOOMH moment ever--to the point of being actually creepy. I'm going through something sorta like this, I've heard parts of the guy's internal monologue in my head, and the girl in question looks EXACTLY (height, hairstyle, glasses) like the one in the comic.

I also heartily agree with mschmidt (who submitted his post while I was typing mine), and cannot possibly put my feelings about the comic better than he did. Well done, Mr. Jacques. Well done indeed.

Don't worry, David. I couldn't figure it out even after reading it several times. It wasn't until I finally spotted the question mark above the girl's head that I realized what was going on.

Jeph used the XKCD tradition of taking something conventional and turning it on it's head. Like "bail out" or "integrating a school".

For the first four frames, I was sitting there wondering why Randall had allowed such a terrible cartoonist (actually a rather good cartoonist, just terrible at doing XKCD) to do his strip. Then at the fifth frame I started to realize just how good Jeph was at simulating XKCD. Randall would have made the narrative bubbles less whiny, but otherwise rather good.

:? IMO, it would have been funnier if I didn't have to reread it to figure out what just happened. At first I thought the girl herself was flirting with just the internal monologue box, and then the last few panels completely lost me so I had to try it again. So... Funny idea, and a great style imitation, but it could have been executed better. Maybe if both monologues were in the square boxes, and differed in style of text? That would have made it clearer that all of the conversation was separate from the stick characters (at least in my strange mind).

Kudos to Jeph Jacques for stepping up and being a guest. I hadn't heard of him before this, and after a casual glance I don't think I'll be reading his comic on a regular basis, but I appreciate what he's done here.

Wait, what? Jeph Jacques is "emulating" xkcd? How come, since the art was about TWENTY TIMES BETTER than the stuff Randall does? No detached heads, dynamic and expressive poses, clean and neat drawings... and, get this, an ACTUAL JOKE, which actually makes fun of the self-absorbed and whiny types. "Emulating" my ass.

And I gotta say, I think Questionable Content is a pile of garbage. My guess Jeph is just bad at making storylines and building characters (and NOT stuffing the comics with his own musical opinions mouthed through his characters), but good at making actual jokes, whereas Randall is... um... er, let's leave it at that.
