My friend has a cycle to explain this effect! Except it's not a graph...and I don't think we've seen any movie that would cause it to dip so far into the negatives...Except maybe Jesus Christ Vampire Hunter.

This comic was disappointing; I wasn't going to watch it before, and I'm still not planning to watch it. This comic has not affected me in any way.

I suppose I'll get back to what I was doing earlier...

Replace Rocky Horror with Army Of Darkness, and you'll have my full agreement.

Also, why did he put the punchline in the graphs title at all? Title text, maybe, but not in the first thing we see.

I don't mind graph jokes, just don't give it away.

At least the commercials are awesome. International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union. Also, TOBOR, the hot toy of the year. "TOBOR: it's robot spelled backwards."

Verily, I have seen the truth behind this comic; when I tried to watch the Special with some other folks, we barely made it halfway through. Then we watched Kung Fu Hustle, a much better film.

I had to register just to comment on this particular comic: I too have seen this monstrosity:

Twenty minutes of wookies talking, without subtitles. WITHOUT SUBTITLES. And Jefferson Starship. Bea Arthur in a sing and dance number. Grandpa Wookie in a scene that horrifies me to this day. These examples: only a small taste of its awfulness. The only redeeming features were the in-cartoon appearance of Boba Fett and a most entertainingly high Carrie Fisher (have to stick through to the end though).

I looked forward to watching this thinking I would enjoy it for being a bad movie. I came out scarred for life.

The SWHS wasn't really that bad*, it was just bad for Star Wars. The biggest disconnect between the makers of SW and the fans is that the fans think that Star Wars is supposed to be Serious Business, and the creators (Lucas I assume, but ILM and whatever producers are involved) are not above introducing, not humor per se, but levity (the Holiday Special, C3PO, the Ewoks, Senator Jar Jar). The triple essence of the Star Wars continuum are superpowered space-monks, rebellion against tyranny, and family drama. None of these engender feelings of levity, and yet they keep putting them in there.

And I gotta go with RHPS being good for being good. The music's great and the B-movie nature is tounge-in-cheek like Ed Wood.

*I mean it was bad, but no worse than some of the USA Up All Night softcore porn movies, or classic baddies like Troll 2 and Hobgoblins.

Y'know, I finally saw Plan 9 a while back, and without really knowing much about its history I couldn't see what the big deal was. It was just kind of blah for the most part.

Steroid are you insane? It was awful even for a poorly supervised 70's TV movie... I love coming to XKCD and having it be so spot on with identifying different experiences in my life. I downloaded the SWHS for exactly the reason Randall states and I couldn't even get through it! In fact my favorite thing about the recording is the McDonald's commercial that comes on during it where they sing the: "Is there more in the middle of an egg mcmuffin than an egg in the middle of a muffin?" song which has become a standard question for me when I go through the morning drive-thru =D

Anyway I digress. I couldn't come even close to finishing the movie, it's embarrassingly terrible. Watch it until you feel your soul start to die, then just skip to Carrie Fisher's song at the end and put yourself out of your misery. I mean please! 20 minutes of Chewbacca's wife droning on in Wookie is enough to make any man cry.

After watching the Star Wars Holiday Special, I could never look at Star Wars the same way again. It was pretty much... a two hour long mash-up of trippy music videos, Star Wars actors embarrassing themselves, and unrelated video clips. Fun for the whole family, I'm sure.

Yes - the only way to view this movie is via Rifftrax for sure. Same with "The Room".

Two things:
Watching it during its one and only broadcast when you're a little kid in the pre-Internet era with no other real Star Wars material was available - all you really care about is seeing the movie characters again.
Watching it with Rifftrax is well worth the pain, although if you couldn't stomach "Manos" or "Monster a Go-go" on MST3K it's probably still not something you'd want to see.

I once thought as Randall did as well.....It was the worst 2 hours of my life (minus the animated part, that was kinda cool).

The alt text has it so right. You have no idea just how awful the Holiday Special really is until you see it.

Were you one of the ones that protested Chewbacca's death in "Vector Prime"? Within the first five minutes of the Special, you'll want to murder his entire family.

Enjoyed this comic and am grateful for the heads-up. Having experienced panels two and three more than once after hopeful "ooh, this looks terrible, let's get it" sessions at the video store, I am NOT getting my hands on SWHS. Learned my lesson.

However this does seem like a good opportunity to share favorite bad holiday films with fellow travelers. Mine are:

(For Hallowe'en) House of the Long Shadows
Vincent Price! Christopher Lee! Peter Cushing! And Desi Arnaz Jr. That cast really tells you everything you need to know about the film.

(For Christmas) Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
I imagine many here know this one, but for those who don't: Martian children are depressed, because they've been watching earth TV, and they don't have a Santa. A kidnap plan is hatched. Prepostrousness ensues, complete with spaceship, robot, and a very young Pia Zadora.

Disagree. On Bad Movie Night, Star Wars Holiday Special is entirely appropriate. I'm usually the one who picks the movie(s) for our weekly bad movie night, and my philosophy is that if everyone doesn't hate me by the end of the night then it's not fun. Of course, I could deal without the death threats and friends who show up for the first time gouging their own eyes out, but hey, gotta break a few eggs to make an omelet, right?

Oh and if you haven't seen it, here's the cliff's notes:

Chewbacca's family grunts at each other in Wookie-speak. No subtitles. Dancing squirrel things dance. Luke Skywalker looks like a girl. Han and Chewie express their feelings for each other on the Millennium Falcon. Art Carney makes children cry. An elderly wookie masturbates to futuristic hologram internet porn. Bea Arthur sings to a dude with a hole in his head. An imperial trooper tells a child wookie to go to his room, and tears the head off of his doll. Boba Fett calls everybody "Friend." Chewie makes it back for Life day and the wookies, having waited for him to get back, walk through space and listen to Carrie Fisher sing a song about Life Day set to the tune of the Star Wars theme. Star Wars fans cry.

I may have left some parts out, or, more likely, repressed the memories of the most painful parts. That's the general gist, though, and should give you enough to go on to pretend you've watched it without risking gouging your eyes out during the "masturbating wookie" scene.

I think you under estimate the time it takes for the Holiday Special to cause a murderous Frenzy. The fastest record is 2.3 minutes I believe.

Wait a minute! I've seen that graph somewhere before...

It's right on the tip of my tongue...

I've got it! It's analogous to the uncanny valley. There are movies so bad that they appear to be good movies, and are almost as enjoyable. This is why B-movies are so troperiffic: they're the smiley-face version of the Mona Lisa.

Is the funny supposed to come from the fact that some things are too bad to be enjoyed ironically? Maybe if that were an original idea, or if he had done something clever with it it might pass as a joke. Is the joke that SW holiday special is really bad? Because anyone who cares already knows that. Is it just a claptrap for people to say, "Randal get out of my head," because that's kinda what it feels like.

For example I had almost the exact experience as the stick figures in this comic with the movie "Norbit" and not nearly enough booze; however that doesn't make this comic actually funny at all. I had a kidney stone too, but if someone made a comic of a graph about how much renal colic sucks and a few panels next to it with a guy vomiting from the pain, I wouldn't laugh and say, "oh he knows me so well." I would think, " that's not actually funny at all," just like with this comic.
To all law enforcement entities, this is not an admission of guilt...

I've never seen the infamous Special, but just in the past 24 hours I thought about both it and the idea of something being so bad that it goes all the way past so-bad-it's-good and becomes so-bad-it's horrible. And now this comic pops up. So I'm still gonna say the "get outta mah head!" thing.

*proudly displays his kitschy nerd cred*

I've seen it (not live, but a couple of years back). Like someone else said, it's not bad for Star Wars, especially when you factor in the prequels.
Then again, I'm a huge fan - have been since '77. Had the covers on my bed and everything.
On the OTHER other hand, you know what they say about SW fans and SW.

Is RHPS really a bad movie? I've only seen parts, and it's definitely ridiculous, but I don't know that I see poor quality.

Like Evil Dead is pretty terrible ('tho I do think pretty much any recent horror movie could benefit from a clay-mation decay sequence) but still fun. sort of.
