That was pleasantly surreal.

I wonder if that's The hat, and not a decoy. I wonder why she was wearing it ice skating. I wonder where they were ice skating in April... on the ocean, or why there was a submarine in a lake. I wonder if that's a one man submarine.

So does the alt-text imply that the submarine is Russian, or that the comic takes place in Russia?

Also, the stick-figure-formerly-known-as-black-hat-girl's reaction makes me wonder if maybe she wanted the classhole to find her, but it didn't end the way she expected. Or maybe I'm reading way too much into a stick figure drawing. One of the two.

Maybe they are planning on melting the ice caps, together.
lihan161051 wrote:Not to pick, but was "you took my hat" supposed to be in there twice? The second instance makes sense, the first one .. ?

(Unless she's anticipating his line ..)

The first "you took my hat" doesn't have a line attached to it, maybe it's an echoey, remembering "you took my hat", or something.

Good comic, but the first instance of 'You took my hat' should be erased, and the second instance should have been the last line.

Am I the only one that thought that these two would make the perfect couple? I can imagine them fighting over the hat and then making out or something.

Too much?

EPIC. WIN.

That was an amazing comic.

Also, regarding the repeated text, I think it was a mistake. If you compare the words, they're written in exactly the same way. It will probably mysteriously vanish shortly.

don't worry, hat girl is skating with elaine roberts... the hat is bugged. classhole is cunning enough to get a russian sub, but as you recall... his hat got jacked first. she was anticipating this all along—nay, planning on it. she'll have her way, just you wait...

Classhole's line just before he walks away is "I LIKE my hat." He emphasises "like", giving Black Hat Woman just enough time to wonder if he'll admit to liking her, and then finishes with "... my hat." Even after she sees through him, he still gets to say something hurtful.

I like that line.

Of course, I look forward to Black Hat Woman inflicting cruelty at an even higher level in Journal 4.

Looks like the two sites switched domains for April Fool's. I'm guessing the added an autocorrect rule so the links wouldn't suddenly break. That thar's whatcha yall coverin' all your bases.

Actually Randall Munroe came up with the idea for April Fool's to switch domains between Xkcd, Jeph Jacques' Questionable Content, and Ryan North's Dinosaur Comics. Which is quite humourous if you consider that Dinosaur Comics had our beloved velociraptorphobic comic artist's (Mr. Munroe) domain here. :D

Anyhoo, I'm ecstatic that we see our classholish friend again with his hat. :D The world is now back in its proper place. Perchance Elaine Roberts is going to help our mischievous hat stealer extract her revenge. All I know is that I wait in anticipation.

Do people realize that The Hat Liking Guy Previously Known As Black Hat Man must have been waiting in the submarine in the lake since before it froze?

He's Hatman.

Fix'd.

He's a quasi-humanoid being of pure maliciousness. More accurately, He's a composite of all of our collective inner classholes. Just like Elaine Roberts is all of our inner hackers put together and turned up waaay further than 11. More like 211.

What would it be like if Elaine Roberts and Hat Guy had a kid? (Nearly all of `1337' happens in flashback, so she's old enough)

Edit: How dare you compare Hat Guy to a mere superhero!

LOVED the comic, ahh sweet closure at last, having said that I'd love to see a continuation of the storyline.

As for the two instances of "You took my hat", I read it as:

"You took my hat", "YOU took my Hat!", "I LIKE my hat"
(Similar to as stated above)

good, i hope this turns into a good ongoing duel between BHM and Elaine. I wonder what she can do to get the hat back off him after the use of a russian sub by him. anything else may seem lame.

Epic win.

But on the other hand, there was that brief panel that looked to be leading up to a more romantic ending. It did not. This is mildly disappointing. :P

good, i hope this turns into a good ongoing duel between BHM and Elaine.

Even if Elaine appears in today's comic, she is not the one who took the hat.

I believe Randall Munroe is a fan of the movie Silverado.

Surfacing a sub (perhaps in one of the Great Lakes, to account for the trees?) to retrieve a favorite hat is the modern-day analog to getting into a gunfight with the cowboy who stole your hat.

Journal 3 comic is truly made out of Epoch Win!

On first seeing Black Hat Girl on the ice shouting "skate faster", my initial thoughts were that she was going to play a cruel classhole-ette trick on her and make her fall through, or perhaps she anticipated that Black Hat Man was on to her and lurking just beneath the ice. Almost like Hunt for Red October in a way.

Nice little stunt by the classhole where he casually says hi, leaps out of the hatch and slides all the way along past her, swiping his hat back in the process.

Can't wait for Journal 4 (heheheheheee)
