I'm assuming it's a D&D reference. Now I'm just waiting on someone l33ter than me to explain it...

Um, ok you, out of the geek gene pool.

Props to XKCD for this. I've found that geeks have a special place in their heart for Mr. Gygax. Many of the normally black humor comments on the Slashdot article were modded as troll.

I wasn't going to post here (I mean, c'mon...), but it should be clarified that Gary is a co-creator of D&D that passed away Tuesday/Wednesday (don't remember which).

The comic made me laugh, the alt-text made me sad.

Gary Gygax was the architect of the tabletop roleplaying game, Dungeons and Dragons, for those who genuinely do not know.

The joke would have been completely predictable if the context was clear from the start. Putting it this way round is inspired.

To clarify:

Gary Gygax is a co-creator of Dungeons and Dragons. He passed away on Tuesday.

Edit: This was x-posted to the other thread and is thus redundant on this one. Feel free to ignore.

Meh, personally I favor Penny Arcade's tribute, but I think it's the simplicity of their version which appeals to me.

I'm posting in this thread because of the proper capitalization.

Gary Gygax was the creator of D&D. He died recently. I just realized that the person in this strip is probably Gary, eeking out a few more years of life by challenging Death to a game of D&D, which, of course, can run for months or even years.

EDIT: Aw, ninja'd

And if you genuinely don't know, GTFO. Seriously. I feel like there are lots of comics where I can see someone not understanding them (I'm looking at you, programming references), but "Gary who?" is unforgiveable.

I believe the other thread gets priority for being posted first. I'm sure 4=5 can edit the first post to put in proper capitalization if it really bugs people that much.

Edit: that was an impressively fast merge. Confused the hell out of me for a short while.

Randy and I were just discussing whether this comic was obvious enough, and the end conclusion was "well, it's probably obvious enough from the comic, but maybe not. But if they read the alt-text, they'll *definitely* get it."

Apparently not.

I thought Gary Gygax's death was pretty big news...

Actually, now that I think about it. Maybe we are being a bit harsh on people who didn't know that Gary died, so they might not get the context of the reference. They might have just missed the news for some reason or another. I almost missed it.

I began to doubt when no one posted anything right away. I was almost dared to take it.

I've never played D&D, but I still have to give Gary props for all he's done.

I assumed more people here would have known about it. My bad.

The comic itself is great, but this will have been the third one in a row that deals with a game. At least it's fitting end to the week's comics.

I have to admit. I'm pretty astounded that more people didn't get this comic... The day that Gary died I had a slew of people inform me about it. Honestly, he is an incredible influential person in the world of tabletop rpgs. Without him there might not be a D&D or any other systems that spawned from it. We would probably have something, but it would be different. Even though we would be ignorant of this difference I would like to think that something would feel like it was missing from the gaming experience. Ah well. He did contributed many things and I thank him heartily for that. <3

QFT.
Imagining Death's exasperation at wrangling all the books, charts, etc. that many of us would consider "fun" makes me chuckle.

The fact that Gary's gone makes me stop.

Pardon me. I was more distraught that a certain previous friend of mine was shot yesterday, and didn't bother to find out who else died. Furthermore, GTFO if you don't get the programming references. Hmph!

It's as obvious as it needs to be. Maybe his name on the rule book he pulls out, but, really, it's pretty clear.

I don't play tabletop games, and hardly any RPGs in general, but, come on.

It's Gary Gygax.

[If you aren't geek-savvy enough to know him from D&D, you should at least know him from his Futurama appearance.]
Luckily, I have the [noun] of science.

Really quite silly of death to make that kind of rule.

I suppose it helps the monotony of immortality, but that's a burden immortals must face.

I must confess that I make roleplaying jokes all the time in real life, to the point where my some of my less (and increasingly, more) nerdy peers are inspired to tactful silence as opposed to sounds of confusion and blank stares. This made me laugh out loud, even though I have never played D&D. By the way, does anyone know why his face looks so odd? (the guy death is rping

edit: HA! "the guy" IS Gary. *face palms self, and roles D6 for damage*
