Hmmm. I was just thinking it's funny how this panel appeared the same week we've been assigned to write a fake obituary for Journalism class, and then I realized it might be relevant to my Statistics class too.

I dread the days when I leave school and can no longer relate to this comic.

Probably very few people, since the ones who don't generally die in explosions involving ORANGE MOCHA FRAPUCINOOOOOOOS!

^By the way, not a Rick Roll, it's a link to the scene from Zoolander. I'm not a fucknut.

Yes, but you can still have accidents relating to zombies and die from them. Such as shotgunning your teammate.

Looking for a non-match, I tried "Zamboni". 2 hits.

You learn so much on the web: A Zamboni is not a motor vehicle.

I hadn't seen that actually. I was more interested in the male side of things but I see now that there's nothing to worry about, unless you're female.

Ok, here's me being disappointed with xkcd fans. "died in a elevator" now has 24 hits. "died in an elevator" still has the reported ~575.

Meanwhile, the hazards of blogging have been skyrocketting. From 81 hits to 134 hits just while I was reading through the forum responses thus far. Assuming this is an exponential curve, by morning, I expect to have died in a blogging accident - and I don't even blog...

No results for:
"died in a debugging accident"
"died in a DRM accident"
"died in a nanotechnology accident"
"died in a computing accident"

Odd that blogging should be more dangerous than the first three... ;)

edit :One result for "died in a spamming accident"
Why do you assume that I exist?

Seems like a bad idea. How do you think those knitting deaths occur? Also "died in a fiery accident" has 493. Tis to be expected but is still gruesome.

I don't have time to read the whole forum today, but might I point out (incase people are missing this) that the chart shows "hit counts" on how many times people Searched for each keyword... not how many people actually died in the type of death..

For instance, the "Blogging" is 2.. so 2 people searched for "Death by Blogging"... while 100 people could have actually died that way.. only two people cared enough to look for info about it on the web.

On a less surreal tangent, I'm kinda amused that this implies that ice-skating accidents are less interesting than gardening accidents.

"Died in an airship accident" does actually produce results.

Be careful out there, rms!
I can't wait to see you again. Maybe we'll go on a grand adventure, rocketing through space, fighting dinosaurs and aliens and Master Control Programs.
Or maybe we'll just lie here and cuddle.
Either way, I'm sooo happy.

First of all, where the heck are the raptors! We need to know those numbers!

Second, presumably, the search was "Died in aN ________ accident" for elevator and ice skating. If this is a comic that features linguistics and computers, is it too much to ask to get the proper input masking right?!

After investigating the first few results on Google, I've formed the hypothesis that many of these accidents seem to be caused by the victims doing things that aren't very safe, like trying to enter and then jump out of a moving elevator that was extremely overloaded, or trying to exit a stalled elevator by prying open the doors instead of waiting for outside assistance. These are not cases of someone entering an elevator and then plummeting to their death.

Please don't click on any links on that site... but the text is odd to say the least. And it seems to incorporate the accidents specified in the comic.

Google having already indexed this "died of a blogging accident" thing (including this forum) is scary enough. Now the spammers are indexing things that fast too !?!?

(and, the "video" leads to a download of an .exe file ... I doubt anyone looking for "died in a blogging accident" will fall for that trap, but just for low values of "anyone" )

Surely noone would fall for that - I don't know if it's just Firefox but the 'video' doesn't even look right... Comparitively it looks flat. Maybe it's a little smaller than normal.

xkcd existence is messing with all the interwebs...

"died in a blogging accident" has 1070 results now! (unfortunately a lot of them are spam)

And even the (then with zero results) "snake charming accident" and "haberdashery accident" have now 10 results each!

Damnit, Monroe, you broke the internet again!

"Died in a blogging accident" is the 8th hottest trend on Google in the USA today. This is pretty cool.

[edit] "Died in a snake charming accident" also made #89.

Hmm, putting in "an accidental accident" (making sure not to throw off the Google searches with my post) yields no results either. Also "accidental accident accidentally" yielded no real results (4 results total, none with that in a sentence). Seems the world isn't a fan of death in a redundant manner.
