Alt: The cola+Mentos trick is up there with corn starch+water (vibrating platter optional) in scientific coolness out of common kitchen supplies.

Why would the guy pop out of nowhere because of Mentos and coke? Maybe it's too early/late to be reading xkcd?

You've never put Mentos in Diet Coke before, have you? Try it. The results are spectacular.

Edit: This was in response to the OP

Maybe the dad originally fell into a glass of Sprite and Peppermint Patties. Which doesn't react chemically, but sounds tasty as all hell.

This is the first time I've seen an xkcd with a pbfcomics-style punch line.

I like it!

I thought that was the funniest thing, even though the whole sentiment is a cross between the one episode of Dick Van Dyke where he's teaching the class on humor ("See, if I say 1+1=4, that's kinda' funny because it's unexpected. You're expecting me to put the right answer down and I don't. But let's erase that now because it's wrong. I mean, any kid your age knows that 1+1=11.") and the man in hat going all "no worky, does science" in that one episode.

And the fact that it might be a reference to that blog article sarcastically saying this comic fucks makes it even more awesome.

Non-newtonian fluids on a vibrating platter @ 10kHz is pretty cool. Search YouTube for it.
Also: The mentos+diet coke thing is dying out. This is just a nutty twist that my brain can't take. Would make for interesting dinner conversation though:

DSkippy told me about a Pepsi ad that translated into Chinese became "so good, it will bring your ancestors back from the dead!" I assume* it's a reference to that. He says it's a popularly cited example of transly poorlated advertisements.

*note - my opinion that it is a reference to this is not necessarily shared by DSkippy or any of his affiliates.

The comic was meant to be ironic. It's saying that he has to have a pathetic life to be putting mentos in diet coke, which is supposed to be signified by the fact that his dad was dead. You have to imply a lot to get it though. Maybe i'm wrong, I would be interested to hear another interpretation.

EDIT: It could also mean that diet coke and mentos is so powerful and awesome that it can bring people back from the dead, which is completely true.

this is both adorable and horrible.

it's not really the sort of thing that should be explained. There are probably a lot of pop culture refferences and such to be mined out of it, but I think the absurdity of putting candy in a soft drink to produce a geyser and instead bringing someone's dad back (possibly from the dead) is humor enough.

HOLY FLYING FUCK

This is the biggest coincidence I have so far witnessed!

Just today, about 3 hours ago I was talking about EXACTLY THIS!

We joked about what magical things can be done with Menthos and Diet Coke.

When I opened this page, I thought I had read this and then had the conversation, then realized, the conversation was at 10pm!

That just made the rest of the 23 hours of my day.

Yeah, this is almost definitely a reference to the "What xkcd should be like" parody comic in that link up there.

I LOL'd. Hard.

At 11:30 I decided to re-read the archive while I waited for the comic to update. I ended up losing track of time and I didn't actually realize the new comic had been posted for nearly an hour. The archive is fantastic, three cheers to Randall!

I also wondered if it was a reference to the review of xkcd.

I *think* he is indeed being sarcastic, though it took me most of the article to figure it out. I agree that he fails hard at sarcasm, but this comic makes his whole stupid rant have a very awesome purpose.

While I would have said something like that, I was in fact quoting the comic that he was whining about and therefore winning more.
