Ungood news.
I wanted to modify my enhancing tools to deal with animated frames.
But I was not able to save the enhanced frame.
I found out that DevIL, the library I'm using for this is not able to save gif files.
It can read them but not save.

Luckily, there is ResIL, which is a continuation of this library and it does support gif (at least that's what's written about it).
Unlike DevIL, ResIL doesn't have a package which can be installed by the package manager.
So I had to download and compile it by myself.
I was not able to do it.
The instructions are contradictory.
README.unix says:
README.unix wrote:You will need autoconf, automake and libtool.

Just type:
autoreconf -i
./configure <your options here>
make
sudo make install
[...]
But this fails:

Code: Select all

3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3> autoreconf -i
' is already registered with AC_CONFIG_FILES.
../../lib/autoconf/status.m4:288: AC_CONFIG_FILES is expanded from...
configure.ac:451: the top level
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1
aclocal: error: echo failed with exit status: 1
autoreconf: aclocal failed with exit status: 1
3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3>

INSTALL says:
INSTALL wrote:Briefly, the shell commands `./configure; make; make install' should
configure, build, and install this package. The following
more-detailed instructions are generic; see the `README' file for
instructions specific to this package.
So the same but without the "autoreconf -i" at the beginning
So try again:

Code: Select all

3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3> ./configure
bash: ./configure: Brak dostępu
3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3>
Fail again. file is not executable.
Try again:

Code: Select all

3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3> chmod +x configure
3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3> ./configure
bash: ./configure: /bin/sh^M: zły interpreter: Nie ma takiego pliku ani katalogu
3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3>
Fail again. This time it failed on a carriage return character. It interpreted it as part of the interpreter path.
Really? THIS is what makes it fail?
I change \r\n to \n in whole file and try again:

Code: Select all

3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3> ./configure
configure: error: cannot run /bin/bash build-aux/config.sub
3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3>
Fail again. "cannot run /bin/bash build-aux/config.sub". Would be nice if there was any information what's wrong with it...
anyway, the INSTALL file said to check the README file for instructions.
README says"
README wrote:How do I build and install the 3 libraries ?

For building under Windows with MSVC 2010 or later, use the project files provided in ResIL\projects\MSVC10.

In all other cases, generate project files using qmake and the .pro files provided in ResIL\projects\qmake.
So something completely different.
And not very detailed. They assume that I already know everything?
Anyway, I guess what they mean by it and try again:

Code: Select all

3.b:~/pro/libdevil/ResIL-1.8.3> cd projects/qmake/

This doesn't work either.

Ok, I don't know how to continue now.
I am not able to compile this.
But I need this if I want to be able to make my enhancing tools support animated frames.

Do you mean the one that Zooman posted? That's not an ABBA song, but one by a group called Middle of the Road. The mistake is understandable, though, as they were a major influence on the sound and style of ABBA, especially in their early days.

There's also this version of the song which has been all over the news recently. Isn't it easy to imagine it's in Beanish?

It is! That's a cool-sounding language.

Do you mean the one that Zooman posted? That's not an ABBA song, but one by a group called Middle of the Road. The mistake is understandable, though, as they were a major influence on the sound and style of ABBA, especially in their early days.

 Oops. I didn't watch the whole video, just some of the beginning, and the blonde woman and the guy totally look like they're half of ABBA. If I had watched more, I might have noticed the brunette was missing, and there was an extra guy. Thanks for setting me straight.

Wow, BG, those were some amazing ch*rps in that video. I love all those psitticine (parrot-related) raptors.

Ha. Depends on what you consider your linguistic community, I suppose. We have surprising agreements on the OTT about what some OTTish terms mean, even if nobody else understands them. (Of course, we are also notorious for not sticking to any standards ni ni ni chupacabra ping qong ball...)

Oh, I hadn't even thought of the linguistic oddities of this thread in particular in relation to that; by "here" I meant this forum more generally.

IMHO, the main problem with this definition is that it can sometimes go too far. If a word had originally meant X, and then it was co-opted to mean Y, and then it was co-opted again to mean Z, this definition would find X to be the meaning even if no one still uses that word to mean X any more, as long as X was still going on when Z started.
In particular, any leftover* pedants holding on to an otherwise obsolete earlier meaning would always be "correct" by this definition unless the pedants of the time when the later meaning had only started to appear held on to an even older meaning (and, in principle, further up in the chain, though at that point it would be tricky to determine - there's not that much extant on what medieval people thought words' meanings were).

It also happens sometimes that a word meaning X would extend to W and Y, and then W extends to V and Y extends to Z, while the intermediate meanings are lost. (And X itself might well have derived from an earlier H.)
If we apply the definition to the word "mark", whose modern meanings (I'm somewhat simplifying) are "impression" and "pre-euro German currency", we will find out that the consensus meaning is "boundary"; the same root, as it happens, gave us "march" meaning "military song" (and, until relatively recently, "boundary region").

In other cases, the W and Y intermediaries are lost, while X is still around (and so are V and Z); this is the case of "check", whose original and presumably consensus meaning is "attack on a king in chess". (Original in English, that is; etymologically it is the same root as "chess" itself, and originally meant "shah", as in "Persian ruler".) All the other meanings derive from the chess one, by pathways that, for the most part, had since lost their intermediate steps.

Finally, it happens sometimes that the original coiner had intended the word to mean X, and then it was popularly misinterpreted to mean A, which then quickly split into camps B and C (and D, and E...) while the original coiner still tried in vain to insist on X.
For a specific example, the word "meme" would get the extremely extensive Dawkins definition, which is hardly ever used due to its sheer extensivity (practically anything counts as a Dawkinsian meme), while most of the word's modern users debate whether it refers to all the popular pictures on the internet or only to the captioned ones (and probably have no idea who Dawkins is).

As for the decree, I present this song, which is not technically about ch*rping but mentions both it and m*stard. Sadly, I cannot recommend a video of it at the moment.

I really should get around to blitzing again... seriously fell back on it lately.

*) It is important, as well, that those are leftover pedants; it happens sometimes that the older meaning was entirely obsolete for a while before some pedants decided to campaign for it anyway. Those scenarios can often be hard to distinguish.

Perhaps I need to reword what I intended to say then, because that case is explicitly not meant to be included.

In particular, any leftover* pedants holding on to an otherwise obsolete earlier meaning would always be "correct" by this definition

This is basically what is intended. If you have a linguistic community who all agree on the use of a word, and then some subset (regardless of size) begins using it differently, and that different usage isn't just accepted by the entire community as a natural extension of the meaning but generates a conflict between subgroups of the community (regardless of their size) as to which usage is correct, whichever of those subgroups didn't change gets to claim priority for their meaning; we don't get to tell someone that they're suddenly using words wrong when they used to be using them right and haven't started using them differently, so if a decision has to be made as to which is correct, it's the one that always used to be correct. If the old consensus meaning dies out completely, and there are multiple different surviving variant meanings, then those are effectively different words now, if the whole community is willing to acknowledge as much, like in many of the examples you gave. Or else, if you have two groups of language-users who insist that they are using the same word but meaning different things by it, rather than two words spelled and pronounced the same but obviously differing in function by context, then those two groups' languages are beginning to speciate; they've taken a step toward no longer speaking the same language.

Actually, I thought it was ready 2 weeks ago,
but when we tried it out we found out it isn't.
As long as we were going on a flat road everything was ok.
But on a more bumpy road the chain was falling off all the time.
Normally, for it would mean that I have to increase the chain tension.
And for a bike without a derailleur this can be done by carefully adjusting the wheel's position, moving it a bit backwards.
But with this bike it couldn't be done correctly.
The front gear isn't completely symmetrical, the center of the gear isn't perfectly aligned with the center of the axle.
Which means that when turning, it's constantly increasing and decreasing the tension.
So I needed to make something that would automatically regulate the tension like a derailleur does.
So I reused part of an old derailleur and built a chain tension regulator:

And here you can see a video recording, how it works, adjusting its position to keep the chain from falling off:

I'm proud of this idea.

Very sweet balthasinging - your sister acts like a pretty big tree!

@Pfhorrest - The idea that words mean something may be worth reconsidering. It's certainly a useful attribute, and as a concept is a useful abbreviation that paints with a broad brush over broad areas. Certainly words are more useful when they are more broadly understood, and that is aided by consistency in meaning. But words themselves having the property of meaning something? I think not. And that's an issue I have with your latest qong (which I'll elaborate on there when I find that useful circular device that allows me to do things).

You may find Douglas Hofsteader's books of great interest - he deals a lot with meaning, figure, ground, translation, etc. There's one in particular, but I can't think of the title right now. In any case, I think you'd enjoy all of them. Worth a trip to the library. (Well, two trips, assuming you're not pulling a Beanie Map Trick.) :)

Hi january1may! Hope you are enjoying your Long Pint! Welcome back any time. And did I see Corinne stop by too? <wave wave>
