So computers are just organised sand.

But what is sand?
It's nothing else than tiny rocks.

So the rock analogy is not that far as it seems.

I don't think so:

Well, sometimes I forget about eating and drinking when I'm working, but then after that I feel hungry and/or thirsty.
The guy with the rocks wrote:This place has fewer distractions than a Swiss patent office.
My place has a lot of distractions (e.g. my FFS).
The guy with the rocks wrote:I have infinite time and space.
I only have 3102 frames of Time (plus Time after Time) and a sphere with a radius of about 13.8·10⁹ light years of space.

Also, that guy's physics simulator seems to use Feynman diagrams. I don't use them.

And he's not wearing glasses.

Time for some analysis.
solve differential equations

The lines and arrows are not just a nice picture.
They actually show how this differential equation is solved.

So what do we see here?
Newton throws an apple diagonally
and then figures out its path through space and time.

We start with this:
x''(t)=-g
x''(t) is the second derivative of x(t) - which is the function describing the apple's path or, more specifically, it's vertical position over time, and that is the function we are trying to find here.
g - the "standard gravity"
and there is a minus sign because it's pointing downwards and we assumed that upwards is the positive direction and downwards the negative one.

-g is a constant value, so we get a horizontal line:
Image

from x''(t) - (second derivative - also known as the rate of change of the rate of change of the vertical position, in other words vertical acceleration) we can go to x'(t), the first derivative by a process known as integration.

Integration can be, like this frame says, "extremely difficult".
Luckily, here we have a simple example which can be solved without too much effort.

To go from x''(t) to x'(t) we have to treat each value of x''(t) as the rate of change of x'(t) in the same point of time.
Graphically, if we represent the values of x''(t) as arrows then we build x'(t) by stacking the arrows on top of each other:
Image
So we can think of integration as arrow-accumulation :)
Ok, so this way we can get the next value of x'(t) basing on current value of x'(t) and x''(t) but how to get the first value?
the answer is - put there the original speed at which the apple was thrown. (v0 on the graph)

if we repeat the same thing once again we get from x'(t) (first derivative - also known as the rate of change of the vertical position, in other words vertical speed) to x(t) (the function which we are looking for):
Image
And again we just have to put x0 as the initial position.

And here is our solution.

Of course, in reality we have to use a lot more points than the arrows shown here, much closer to each other than shown here,
otherwise we will get results which are too inaccurate, especially with functions which are not as simple as these shown here.
But that's what computers are good at.
That makes them a good tool for such things.

Also, what this frame does numerically (by accumulating values in lots of points) the previous frame does analytically (by actually finding the exact formula):
Image

Thanks for that post of <Mathy stuff>, balthawhiz. I cannot tell a lie, I skimmed over it. But I plan to go back and read it.

Did I tell you xuys I was an extra in the movie "Us?" And that I was in the trailer? I think I shared that picture of me in the trailer. Turns out you can see me in the movie, too. If you see the movie, I'm in one of the very first scenes. They're at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, and the father is playing a game to win a t-shirt for his little girl. A woman in a bright blue jacket crosses the screen from left to right, arm in arm with an older gentleman. That's me! You can see me when they flash back to that scene later. That was fun. It's a good movie. More thriller than horror, and there are a lot of questions after seeing it. But I liked it.

Baobabs! It's great to not be on the cutting room floor - the cutting room floor is like the basement, except you never come back. So, does the movie title have a question mark as part of it, or is there simply a quote mark to sidle out of the picture? I take it the movie is out in theaters?

Great emojidome candidates! So... do we pair up 1300 against 1800? Or shall we run a series of 1300 first?

I'm betting on big Lucky to win.

Be the guy and check your phone
Image

You are being this guy again.
On your way to find some food you suddenly get an idea to check if there are any messages on your phone.

But then you realise it makes no sense.

Ha! I called it:
Sustainabilizer wrote:SuggestiONG:
> Be that guy.

Er … I mean: I predicted it. “It” refers to the first part of explaining everything the text below the new BSTA frame. I didn't call the phone. The girl in the picture who was sending an SMS to that guy was KXA, not me.

Next prediction: KXA's food supply doesn't contain beverages. b finds the beverage supply, but no food. Both get lost in the labyrinth of the Moon base. KXA tries to phone b, but he doesn't check the phone because it makes no sense, so they don't find each other and die of thirst or hunger, respectively. Thus ends BSTA.

Dot't forget air! It's even more important than beaverages.
Then they could really "wake up dead in space".

But

It's very unlikely it would go that way.
It wouldn't fit the style and mood of the rest of BSTA.

Crazy prediction:
They become trapped forever on the moon.
So out of boredom they create their own version of the world-simulating rock-computer.
Only without rocks.
They simulate a world only to realise that they simulate their own world they are in.
That they live in a world which is actually a simulation in their own rock-computer (without rocks).
They misplace some rocks (even though there are none) on purpose
which results in teleporting the base back on Earth.
happy end!
Everyone lives happily ever after.
...except the poor bike which fell into the hole after the base originally disappeared.
...and FTH's car which crashes into the moonbase which suddenly teleports on Earth, just in front of the car, in the middle of a road.

I'd forgotten about that! I guess OTTer cameos are a trend!
I also need to continue my schizoblitz, because 2013H is getting too far back in the Past for my brain to recall easily.

New OtherComic

I think I got it! PhysONGs are transmitted from nearby of a black hole and the extreme Time dilation is the reason why it takes so long between each newpix.
Time. The final frontier. These are the voyages of Cueball and Megan. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before.

Singularity discussion on the release of the black hole picture is another baobabish coincidence for this comic.

qong? (On Meaning and Language)

I can't remember if I've said as much lately, so little time to talk to anyone anymore (but I am still here reading, now that it's slowed down enough to keep up again): that physONG(?) series here is one of the few things I enjoy Waiting For anymore, so thank you for making that.

A message from the OutSide:
Spoiler:
The Ocean pulled its self all together and jumped up into the air.
When it fell down it fell down on Mountains.

The water rushed franticly to get back to the Sea.
It filled the Rivers. It soaked the dirt and rocks.

The water is an irresistible force.
The hillsides sled sideways onto and across roads.

Rocks danced and bounced into and away from one another.
Many rock landed in the already full Rivers; Some onto Roads.

Roads dropped into the busy Seas.
The whole world is in wet action.

Detours: The word of the day is detours.
Long, lovely, exhausting, detours.

Detours on roads still being used with Rivers lapping at their edges.
Detours marked by retroreflective cones guiding cars around slumping hazards.

Detours making a long journey into an epic quest to be home and to post.

But beyond these special cases of ritual or ceremonial speech-acts, my philosophy of language hinges on how "merely" describing something is itself still doing something by speaking — describing is an action — and that speech can do many other things besides just describe, even outside of those iconic ritual or ceremonial cases that best demonstrate the concept of speech-acts.

I find this very true. I work a lot with written language, where the same concept applies, but people seem to associate the "publication" of written words (even things like tweets or forum posts) with intent, and so more easily recognize that putting the words out there has intent beyond the act of publication. This association doesn't always get made with words "published" by speaking. Very interesting read.

Thanks Blitzgirl. I should add a clarification to that essay that by “speech” I don’t just mean human mouth-noises but language-use more generally, including writing, signing, etc. You’re the second person that’s been unclear to.

Oh Hello from the Outside!

My life has been hectic lately. But it got shaken upside down. I joined a new writing project, I realised that I should live confidently as the young woman I am without trying to hide myself to be 'normal'--and how damaging that used to be, and I'm trying my best to keep up with my coursework even if it's hard.

Time is great, but time goes on elsewhere to.
