Cuegan left on their adventure 3 nopix later, the whole trip took 3 nopix longer, and they arrived too late to help the Forty. Thus ends Time.

Interestingly, it seems the sliced bread ban was a real thing. Perhaps if it were never re-legalized, we'd all be using the Vitssågen to slice our bread, ja!

La Petite is there from the very beginning, helping Megball build sandcastles. She then goes on the journey with them. Consequently, there is no one to save the raftcastle, and the Forty have no way to escape the rising semencancercoffeebaconbabiesice. Thus ends Time.

So sorry about the implosion, Pfhorrest. As others have said, let us know if we can help.

Hi and welcome, fluffysheep! Yes, this is a fine place to be pedantic. So glad you could join us!

Thanks for the kind words, svenman. And there was some good news from Neil. According to Facebug, he and his brother have been approved for the transplant. It will not be an easy road ahead for them, but hopefully there will be much molpishness on the other side.

In my youth I was an enthusiastic car-spotter. The more rarely seen a car model was, the more interesting it was to me, regardless of its technical or practical qualities as a car. Also, I followed car magazines and there was an article or two about the Polonez when it came out, as there was an attempt to introduce it on the West German market. (That was a total failure, just as with the Polski-Fiat 125 - on which the Polonez was based - before.)

Your post has an interesting numerical position in the thread:

FTH: To three wins?
KXA: Only one. Loser starts.
FTH: Ok. Ready?
KXA: Yes.

I think "the little sailor" needs some explanation, at least it does to me. Balthasar?

Edit: That's good to hear about Neil - thanks for the info, June Bug!

Reminded me of something. Fiat 126p - there was an attempt to introduce it to England, as far as I know it wasn't very successful either.
So some of the cars stayed in Poland.
My uncle's friend had such a car.
Because it was supposed to be for England it had the steering wheel on the right.
When driving, he was sitting on the right. He had a large dog sitting on the left.
From outside it looked like the dog was driving.

Oh, I see. Rock, Paper, Scissors. Is "The little sailor" the translation of what that game is called in Polish?

The Fiat 126 was quite popular in West Germany. After the first few years of production, Fiat stopped importing them from Italy and switched to selling the Polish-built version instead, but under their own brand. Probably a lot of West German customers were unaware that they actually were driving a Polish-built car and not an Italian-built one!

some people call this game "marynarzyk" which is a diminutive of the word "marynarz" which means "sailor" - so yes the name can be translated to "little sailor" - I have no idea where this name came from.

Postby mrob27 » Wed Sep 06, 2017 4:10 pm UTC

Hi everyone! I'm back from Japan, and also back at school. Recently for some reason I thought it would be nice to have a phonetic alphabet (this kind, not this kind) for OTTish use. Here's my first attempt:

Code: Select all

            mrob's proposed OTTish Phonetic Alphabet

Letter Morse OPA         Letter Morse OPA
            A    .-    :Azule:       N    -.    Newpix
            B    -...  Baobab        O    ---   OTTerCon
            C    -.-.  Cuegan        P    .--.  Punsaw
            D    -..   Dunejump      Q    --.-  Quacktor
            E    .     Epsilon       R    .-.   Redundant
            F    ..-.  Facebug       S    ...   Steambottle
            G    --.   Goat          T    -     Trebuchet
            H    ....  Hotdog        U    ..-   Unglish
            I    ..    Innocence     V    ...-  Vittsågen
            J    .---  Journey       W    .--   Wowterfall
            K    -.-   Ketchup       X    -..-  Xip
            L    .-..  Lucky         Y    -.--  Yappo
            M    --    Megball       Z    --..  Zanclean

Bonus: Read from opposite column for ROT13 conversion at no extra cost!

so for example BSTA could be expressed as "Baobab Steambottle Trebuchet Azule". I think the list could be improved. You can start with the OMD for ideas. How about making it ambiguous by using Cueball for C and Queball for Q?

ZoomanSP wrote:New OtherComic.

I noticed a molpish trend: three consecutive OtherComics used the word TIME. Was OTA telling us something?

There's a new footnote on the OtherComics that has been there a while. I haven't seen any mention of this, I'm wondering if anymolp noticed…
At the very beginning of xkcd, the site looked kind of like this. In April 2007 they added some tinytext at the bottom:
In the past, xkcd wrote:We did not invent the algorithm. The algorithm consistently finds Jesus. The algorithm killed Jeeves.
The algorithm is banned in China. The algorithm is from Jersey. The algorithm constantly finds Jesus.
This is not the algorithm. This is close.

According to archive.org, it was no longer seen after late March 2012 and reappeared (along with a Bitcoin account) in late March 2015.
Most of the text is from a 2007 Ask.com marketing campaign (described in this article). As Randall described in a blag post, the phrases were there so that his readers could hijack the Ask.com campaign to draw traffic to xkcd (really!).
The blurb was removed around the 13th SeptemberH of last yip, there was no blurb for a while, and on about the 5th October we got the blurb we see now:
More recently, xkcd wrote:xkcd.com is best viewed with Netscape Navigator 4.0 or below on a Pentium 3±1 emulated in Javascript on an Apple IIGS at a screen resolution of 1024x1. Please enable your ad blockers, disable high-heat drying, and remove your device from Airplane Mode and set it to Boat Mode. For security reasons, please leave caps lock on while browsing.

Brilliant mrob! I do second the M molpy and G grapevine. I'd love to use this in aviation; I suspect however that it might cause some grapevine grapevines in the sky. OTOH I can think of lots of other safer places to use this.

And who knows... maybe we can get the FAA and ICAO to change their alphabet!

(Maybe we can get them to use Beanish!)

Thanks everyone for their well-wishes. Life has semi-un-imploded. (Work is at least temporarily back to tolerable, Mom is at least temporarily not homeless, and the car is fixed again).

I didn't get anything I planned to do last week done, and I'm half a week late to start on this week's work, but Nurbal Colony: Part 1 (the first three episodes of the final series of the Ehrban saga) is up now. I'll try to squeeze parts 2 and 3 in later this week too.

lmjb1964 wrote:mrob, this is steakish and brilliant. Huh, not many OTTish words starting with J, are there?

Yeah, the most common non-dictionary words in the OTT starting with J are things that really aren't OTT words: JS (352 times), jpeg (134 times), json (96 times). The first legitimate OTT word is JabberWalky, the name of a community-written OTTification of Dodgson's Jabberwocky.
I think it's better than Journey. It fulfills the criteria of distinctiveness and rarity (in a phonetic alphabet, when you're trying to be understood and not confusing, each of the 26 words should be easy to distinguish from the other 25; and I think it's useful for them all to be things that won't be used too often on their own).

G really should grapevine and M molpy.

I assume you do realise that's the opposite of what HES suggested.

So now we have mrob27's OTTish Phonetic Alphabet v.bis:

Code: Select all

            A    .-    :Azule:       N    -.    Newpix

This is a blind post.

Hi!
May I come back?

I have a great deal of reading to do.
The One True Thread has moved on.

Where I have been....
Spoiler:
I had post embolization syndrome that slowly turned into walking pneumonia.
Then it turned into falling down broke my phone pneumonia.

Antibiotics and oxygen kept the "Old Person's Friend" from taking me.
Pfft...Don't worry. I can't remember most of it. Four days are gone, gone.

Oh! Oh! I moved out of the forest!
Jackie showed up one day with two trucks and five people.

One trip moved my bed, tables, chairs and clothes.
Two more trips were needed to move my plants.

I live in a little upstairs apartment.
I have a lovely sunny private deck.

I love my little apartment!
It is Warm! Yey! Warmth!

And; I have sweet neighbors.
umm...The state of Oregon is on fire.
Smoke and ash from the Columbia River into California.

How is the weather where you are?

Hurray :) Please do let me know any thoughts you have along the way, what I want more than anything is feedback on things that don't make sense or aren't explained well enough or anything like that.

Part 2 of Nurbal Colony is done as scheduled despite life beginning to re-implode again tonight (Mom might be homeless after all, and I have no way to contact her to find out if so because she lost her phone and I don't know where she is now). I'll really try to get part 3 done tomorrow night and save total implosion for the weekend.

Let me know if I shouldn't post these updates here. I post them to the thread I started for this too but I don't think anybody's actually reading that. But I don't want to hog this thread either. Just tell me if I'm doing anything wrong please.

Welcome back addams! We missed you so! Glad you're happy in your new sandcastle (and that you can still use your organized sand, or somebody's organized sand).

And Pfhorrest, you're one of the family. Yes, keep us updated. If you want, you could post the actual update in the otherthread, and post a summary here with a link; that way the otherthread's traffic will see your posts too. But either way, we both want to know how you're doing, and we enjoy the opportunities to wait for it your stories provide.

Yay! Addams is back! We missed you. I missed you. Good to hear you're doing okay, now.

Edit: Hope you won't be directly affected by the fires, at least. Here in Germany there is no danger of anything like that: Summer has very clearly turned into fall, temperatures have dropped to a no-more-short-sleeves range and we've had rain tonight.

And Pfhorrest, sorry to hear about your mom getting hurt, but then again good to hear she's not homeless and your life has un-imploded. Hope it stays that way.

I've been debating with myself whether I should leave it for someone else to ONG the new BSTA panel this time. But I lost the debate.
