This joke does not work in UK English, which prefers "artist's impression".

What I want to know is what mode of departure from a face-to-face conversation made the "::click::" in the alt-text.

I'm American and I don't think I've ever heard about an artist's conception before, just the impression. Am I the only one?

The artist is going off half-cocked… conception occurs a minimum of 30 minutes after intercourse, and typically up to five days afterwards. It can take longer. So unless Rembrandt's parents were getting it on for in the order of a week, then I'm sorry, the image does not depict "an artist's conception".

Here. This might help.

Now that I think of it, this is the first time I heard "Artist's conception" as well, though I understood it immediately and didn't even realize it doesn't say "impression".

While I'm sure this isn't what was actually meant, there in fact is a way for this to both be Rembrandt's parents having sex and to be depicting Rembrandt's conception. They engaged in the intercourse which would result in conception, then, five days later (or however long it took in this instance), they engaged in intercourse again, this time while the conception was occurring.

I believe they meant that hoped it wasn't Rembrandt's artist's conception of his own conception.

Google Ngrams to the rescue!

"Artist's conception" is clearly the older phrase, but "Artist's impression" started to pick up in the 1930s and has been way ahead in BrE since the 1970s, i.e. all my lifetime.

Meanwhile in AmE, "Artist's impression" has also gained ground but has yet to catch up with "conception".

Across the whole English corpus, "impression" just snuck into the lead at the end of the last century.

I did get the conception joke, but I guess the whistleblower was wrong with his assumption about Whistler's mother.

Hmm. Despite what he says, I really don't think they had photography back when Rembrandt was around. So doesn't that mean what she's got there would have to be...

...an artist's conception of an artist's conception?

Does impression mean the same as conception in the sense of a sperm joining with an ovum? Or did that meaning get lost from being stuck on the work itself? :P

I think what he's saying is precisely that they didn't have photography back then. So no recursivity for you.

Yes. I refer you to "going off half-cocked", and "getting it on for in the order of a week" above. So yes, you're warding off others, chump.
