I don't suppose I will notice anyone replying to my posts until the egosearch is back. Good thing I never post anything worth replying to.

I've noticed that the new forum software has a notifications feature that tells you when someone has replied (or at least quoted) or mentioned you anywhere. Hopefully you will see a demonstration of that with this message.

eTech looks like a good subsilver based theme available for modern phpBB. Can we get that one?

The issue is that the favicon is at xkcd.com/favicon.ico instead of forums.xkcd.com/favicon.ico

Seeing a favicon: it's cached since before the migration.
Not seeing a favicon: it's not cached.

At least that hypothesis agrees with what I'm seeing in my browsers with and without porn private mode.

It can be solved by either making a /favicon.ico available for all forum domains or adding a <link> tag to xkcd.com/s/919f27.ico like the main domain does.

Notes from 3rd day without any search function working: It's very difficult to keep track of threads I follow after not going though each sub forum to find them for so long. I find myself using the site much less as a result.

In Chrome I see the favicon in incognito mode as well as when I do a hard refresh, so it's not a cache issue.

Interesting, I tested it on Chromium 45 (which had no previous encounters with *xkcd.com) and it showed no favicon for the forums in both modes (and before and after visiting the main domain). So is Chrome that different from Chromium or is it incredibly stubborn when it comes to caching favicons?

I don't believe I've ever opened XKCD or the fora in Chrome before testing it earlier, and it displayed a favicon.

On Opera 12, I get the proper xkcd favicon when viewing user profiles, but the zimbra favicon1 when viewing threads or posting (most of the time, I haven't yet figured out a pattern; could be caching issues)

1Which is an additional layer of WTF, since I haven't used the thing with Opera in ages...

I think Chrome is just way more aggressive about caching favicons than other things. Like, if I go into Incognito, and load up the forum page with the Network tab open, I can see it specifically try to fetch favicon.ico and get a 404... but then it shows the icon on the tab anyway. And it's definitely not being fetched from somewhere else. Chrome must just have a special fallback for favicons that uses the last-known icon regardless if no knew icon can be found.

On Firefox, on the other hand, a hard-refresh on a page doesn't actually touch the favicon.ico file at all, but if you go direct to favicon.ico and hard-refresh that, then the icon stops appearing on fora tabs going forward.

Has anyone else noticed intermittent problems loading large threads? For example, just now FaiD fleeting thoughts and Coding Fleeting Thoughts were taking 1+ minutes to load for me, but everything else opened quickly. I never noticed that before the migration.

Priority one needs to be egosearch. Or so would says my id, if it could only get its own shit together. Or my superego, if it weren't rushing around trying to save the world...

(Seriously, I have no doubt that searches in their functional entirety, are being looked at by top men. But if themes are so much a lower-hanging fruit that it can be done quickly, before getting back to the other issue, then actually getting it out of the way ought to be the way to go, first. Not that it's an either/or thing, of course.)

(Seriously though, I've been there man.. I've been there. None of the cats back home understand what we've been through... sometimes the only comfort you get is suddenly realising that you can hear the whirring of the fans and see the tracert fire hitting its target. There are some who don't even want to come back, but just want to keep bug-hunting, bug-hunting, bug-hunting... after a while they just seem to blend into the background, let their hair grow long and give up washing lest they alert the errors, but I always still looked forward to the moment that I could evac back out of server country, report to the vending room and just hope that you can avoid a crash on the way out... The worst parts, though, were when you had to take a rookie back in with you, especially on a night-time RAID replacement... that's when the nerves really started to get to me and I'd have to call out to them "RAID 5! RAID 5! You've got to let that sucker finish its parity before you can take on the next disc!")

It's been phpBB3 for many years. This upgrade was from 3.0 to 3.1.

Also: you can request things. Just don't necessarily expect that request to be fulfilled.
