CONSOLE WARS!!!

Postby Cheese » Fri Dec 07, 2007 9:56 pm UTC

Right, which console/terminal is best (or are they different things?). Anything from unix/linux, the windows command prompt (or, as the base of the 9x series, DOS), something strange and unusual?

Oh, and put in amusing or funny commands. Even the ones that everyone's heard of.

My favourite thing to do with other people's windows machines:

DIR C: /s

Yes, it makes people think that I can hack secure networks and stuff, and gives a bad(?) name to technologically inclined people in general, but the looks on their faces...

Now you made me wonder what the diff between console and terminal is. Both wikipedia articles say almost the same. And this debate say both that and some thing else...

Well, my favorite terminal emulator is PuTTY... and then comes GNOME-terminal. I don't like the one in xfce and I don't dare trying KDE anytime soon.

cmd.exe ... can't stand it. If I were going to use Cygwin a lot I'd ssh to localhost from PuTTY :P

As long as you correct them when they use 'hacker' as 'cracker'.... ah well, it's a lost battle anyway

I've actually found good use for DIR C: /s before.

One SAS program I put together used the output from "DIR (directory) /s > output.txt" and then searched the resulting txt file to then sort all files and folders by the largest-to-smallest.

It sometimes takes a while to compile. In the meantime I just joust on the roller-chairs at the office. KF

Bash.

And since you asked, I'm going to be silly and pick out all the dirty sounding things in my path:

unzip
grep
finger
mount
umount
more
fsck
arch
date
sleep
touch
tar
fsck.cramfs
ifup
ifdown
usplash
chattr
cleanlinks
floppycontrol
f-spot
head
whiptail
wine
zip
chroot
chat
reject

These things, properly arranged into paragraph form, will set nerd girls ON FIRE. I speak from experience.
I AM A SEXY, SHOELESS GOD OF WAR!

Whatever a console is, bash certainly isn't an element in that set. There's a thread for shells here too.

But nice list of commands! Care to share how you arranged them into a paragraph?

We have a thread for that, too.

I like Konsole from KDE because I can have >1 session without a status bar to switch between them (I do that entirely by keyboard), I don't use gnomy stuff all that much... . On non-unixy systems, I like FreeDOS's command interpreter because it has a history, tab-completion and is OSS.
Frag mal nach im IRC
'zum Kotzen' das heisst dort XP.
Win2k, nur so zum staunen,
hat mehr Bugs als nur zweitausend.

On gnome-terminal, Shift-Control - T to make a new tab, Control - Page up or Control - Page down to move between them. Or use Alt + (number) to chose one specifically.

No support for readline or similar key bindings.

Edit: Also, no resizing above a set limit.

I use a combination of emacs *shell* and gnome-terminal, when on Linux. When on Windows, I don't. cmd.exe sucks. And if you want to see something REALLY scary, run command.com on Windows. It's frighteningly primitive. If it ever becomes important, I just use emacs *shell*, or switch to a unix system.

It was only this year that I learnt cmd.exe existed. I'd been using command.com all this time. On the plus side, it's what I grew up with (and CLI awesomeness is a major reason I migrated to Linux) and I didn't miss anything advanced. Untill I met bash, after which cmd is just, just, bad.

There is only one shell: bourne-again. Everyone else is full of shit.

Of course, I prefer it in gnome-terminal, but if I can't get that, Konsole or a raw Xterm will do.
