I agree: the NiGHTS soundtrack is amazing. Other than the annoying choral version of the main theme.

Grim Fandango has absolutely lovely music, and always very fitting for the scene but the soundtrack makes a good listen on its own, too.

I personally liked the soundtrack to Jets'n'Guns (done by Machinae Supremacy) and the soundtrack to the Kingdom Hearts games.

WORD, son.
My brothers and I started a game of HMM3 just the other day for the first time in years - I went Rampart, and the town-music made me smile so hard. So many great childhood memories attached to that shit. :D

Just as an aside: if any of you guys are really into music that isn't actually in video games, but conveys the vibe and tropes of old-time 8-bit video-game sugarjoy regardless, check out a Japanese band called YMCK. They sound like a bunch of Super Nintendos given life (adorned by a gorgeous-voiced singer). They're awesome.

The original Secrets of Monkey Island.

Warcraft 2 is pretty epic as well.

Kelly Bailey really did well on the Half-life 2 and the following episodes; really good stuff. Half-Life also had a pretty fun sound track, like when you jump into the HEV suit. Ahhh childhood nostalgia :D

This and the Warcraft 2 soundtrack are the only two soundtracks I listen to outside of the game.

Oh, and Sam and Max, both the older stuff and from the new games. HMM 3 is pretty awesome as well.

What, no mention of Golden Sun? That was my favorite game for the GBA, and had an awesome soundtrack.

Venus Lighthouse
Saturos Battle Theme
Walking Forward With DeterminationThe final world map theme
Magma Rock

What's cool is that there's a sound room in the battle area of the second game that you can access to listen to the entire sound track of the entire series. It ends up being like 96 songs.

Well, I just got my hands on the Second Sight soundtrack a few days ago. Excellently creepy ambient music.

The music in Freelancer is pretty awesome at times, especially when you are fighting the aliens at the end. Also the intro movie.

"Still Alive," of course, from Portal, but much of Guild Wars's soundtrack is from Jeremy Soule and It's good.
Just FYI, the guy isn't avatar isn't me. But he seems pretty cool.

I LOVED Golden Sun's soundtrack, those were amazing games. My personal favorite songs from both games were the final battle songs. So epic.

I am aghast that nobody has mentioned Hip Tanaka yet. A couple of his soundtracks have been mentioned (Dr. Mario/Metroid), but you can't forget:
-Kid Icarus
-Super Mario Land (GB)
-Fire Emblem (the first in the series)
and most importantly...
-Mother, and later Earthbound (with Keiichi Suzuki, a japanese rock artist)

The guy is so versatile and SO awesome. He's one of my favorite musicians ever.

That being said, I'm a little mixed on Uematsu; although he's written some fantastic pieces (One Winged Angel) a lot of his stuff just sounds mediocre to me. The guy is very talented, without a doubt, but (perhaps fitting for a videogame BGM) most of his music just doesn't 'stick' to my conscious. A great exception, though, is the soundtrack to Rad Racer, which is some of the best video game ever.

Another honorable mention is the soundtrack to Marble Madness, by Brad Fuller and Hal Canon.

All the ones mentioned here are good. for a few more WTF ones, i've always found the Sims music to be catchy, and the intro to the first Zoo Tycoon is catchy as all hell.

Halo kicks, and of course "Still Alive"

Kou Ootani's music was half the reason I bought SotC; the other half was that I heard it was a fun game to play.

I'm also a sucker for music from Namco's Ace Combat series.

Do Hyadain's remixes count for this thread? They aren't used in any games, but they're basically really similar elaborations of music that was.
This was the only thing I knew about FF4 when I started playing the game.

[ others & original? ]

Edit: When I was little I played Afterlife. Every now and then one of the arias from that game will start playing as my background music. O_o

Kenji Yamamoto's Metroid Prime score :D

I also love some of the music from the band Trip Cyclone in Shivers II: Harvest of Souls

The original Shivers also has great mood music.

The mod "Fall from Heaven II" for the game "Civilization IV" with the expansion pack "Beyond the Sword."

For those who've never heard of it, you can download all the music here.

World of Goo has some ridiculous music in it. Surprisingly epic. It sounds like something out of a Tim Burton movie. I'd link it, but, post count.

Wii Music has been surprisingly good with the music-making algorithms and sample quality.

On a more mundane note, the soundtrack of Ace Combat Zero has some great music in it. I used to a couple of tracks in an energy playlist.

I have never played the game, but i have the soundtrack. Absoloutly amazing (and hilariously titled!)

My humble offering:
Gears of War (both of them)
Final Fantasy (all of them. Srs. Especially 7 and 8)
Castlevania
Tetris (Ska version FTW!)
Megaman (or Rockman i guess, i had all the japanese ports, and a few other ones.)
Everything's dead until it's alive. Man will exist, and then he will die. Just take the ride!

That's better. It's being criminally overlooked in this thread. It's my favourite video game music ever and so dayum funky.

Anything - ANYTHING orchestral from games... e.g. Legend of Zelda
Especially Legend of Zelda. I am still in a phase right now...
About that.
And I cannot believe anyone has not mentioned World of Warcraft...
Some of the music from the soundtrack is just insane to listen to for me.
I found this one video on youtube of someone playing the LoZ:OoT Overworld theme on theremin...
Amazing.

Motoi Sakuraba. He writes all the GoldenSun music (my namesake as you can see). Mario and zelda are great too but they get old pretty fast for me. I prefer orchestral music like 'Super Smash Bros'. They too get old quickly as well. The true best comes from 'Smashing Live' Orchestra. I hope that still counts a game music, they take the old songs from games (I think they've only take out of Super Smash Bros, Melee, and Brawl hence the name) and play them with a real orchestra so its sounds cooler and not orchestrated. My fav from them has to be Rainbow Cruise. It made me fall in love with the piccolo, an instrument I despised before. Also, the music from Fire Emblem is pretty good. I like Power Hungry Fool from the first of the Radiance Series. Could someone please tell me what instrument plays it besides the violin? I think its some harpocore or something that sounds like that. I've recently been told what it was but I forgot. Much appreciated!

Halo 3
Age of Empires
Rise of Legends
Bioshock
Unreal Series
Half-Life
Still Alive (Portal)
Minerva: Metastasis

I feel geeky now :P

I always found the music from Guildwars to be a little bit too generic to listen to outside of the game, except for a few tracks from Eye of the North.

To any fans of orchestral game soundtracks I have to recommend Lair by John Debney. Crappy game but the music is better (and better produced) than most *movie* scores.
