2012 in music

Postby Sheikh al-Majaneen » Sun Dec 04, 2011 4:28 am UTC

As of yet, there are three releases next year so far which I am excited about. Off the top of my head, Mumford and Sons, Metric, and Silversun Pickups are all releasing albums in the Spring; combined with new bands and discovered old music, this would usually be enough to satisfy me for a whole year.

What other (known) awesomeness can be expected in the coming year?

There's not much confirmed yet, but I know The Twilight Sad have a new record in February, and Sleigh Bells have just announced a new album.

And I live in the continual hope that this will be the year where The Avalanches and/or The Wrens do a new record!

I'm expecting a new Franz Ferdinand album in 2012, as well as a new Devin Townsend album.

Nick Cave releases stuff almost every year as well, so I'm stoked for that because his latest output has been amazing. ( Grinderman, latest Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and the soundtracks for various movies )

I also heard that there's a new Fantomas album coming, so that's cool too. I haven't really looked at upcoming releases, nor do I keep track of them, but these are things I'll be keeping an eye on.

Nightwish - Imaginaerium. I'm really not a fan of Anette, but if they keep making more music, she will have more material to do, and therefore have less time to ruin the old songs.

I've got a few records I'm looking forward to in the first quarter for 2012 now:

February - The Twilight Sad, Sleigh Bells, Of Montreal
March - Andrew Bird, The Magnetic Fields, The Shins

This has no ground in reality, but I'd love at least an EP from Radiohead with a return to a more In Rainbows sound.

I'm pretty sure there's a new MGMT due out at some point in this year, although it was technically due last year. So it might be sooner rather than later?

Oh wow, I had read about that a while ago but forgot it. He hasn't done a proper solo album since Bubblegum (2004 I believe), so I'm looking forward to this.

We have new Silversun Pickups released, and a date for the album (8 May).

Very strongly reminiscent of My Bloody Valentine, with the...bending. I like it.

Already released:

fun's Some Nights
The Shins' Port of Morrow
The Cranberries' Roses
Ani DiFranco's ¿Which Side Are You On?

Reformations:

At The Drive In (all I know is, they'd better come to the east coast)
Refused

Albums coming out or being worked on:

BT allegedly has a double album coming out sometime this year. From what he's posted to his sound cloud account, it sounds similar in style to the songs from This Binary Universe, so that should be phenomenal.

Imogen Heap's heapsongs album is supposed to come out sometime this year.

Crystal Castles are in the studio recording a new album.

Project 86 has a crowd sourced album they're working and releasing sometime this year.

The Glitch Mob worked on an album last summer, I would imagine it's coming out some time this year.

BT's double album is apparently going to be called Laptop Symphony (not crazy about the name) and has an expected release date next month!

Here's one of the soundcloud songs he's already released, called "Hymn[808]":

What I did to deserve new Lacuna Coil, Nightwish, and Epica CDs in such close proximity, I'll never know. But it's appreciated. Edit: Delain, too. So many blessings.

On a side note, I'm absolutely in love Kimbra. She is the girl part of "Somebody that I Used to Know" and after I decided I wasn't gonna find more Gotye stuff I like, I switched to her, and she is amazing. Like a jazzier, less cursy Kate Bush. There is so much talent is is eeking out of her pores. Her cd doesn't release in America until the 22nd, though, so I'm trying to wait patiently, but it's not working out well.

I really really hope so. I can't wait.

I am in great anticipation for Queens of the Stone age to release album number six. I'm also on the countdown for Gojira's new album "L'enfant Sauvage". New Burzum album due in May. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

fun's Some Nights

Aim and Ignite is probably on my Desert Album list, but Some Night was such a let down. About half the song feature a line about being on the road and/or missing his parents, and there's goddamn autotuning. Even the title track is perfect and almost a glorious throwback to Peter Gabriel, but nooooooo, the final quarter of that track is marred and it's ends on such a down night. Worst track is "It Gets Better", imo.

Anyways -- Infected Mushroom - Army of Mushrooms

Nothing really groundbreaking here, mostly just a steady stream of classic Mushroom so if you're already a fan check it out. There isn't too much filler but 3 of the tracks are remixes/covers (Real Life - Send Me an Angel, Foo Fighters - The Pretender [surprisingly good], and Infected Mushroom - The Messenger [which I looooove, both versions.]), and two of the tracks are notoriously heavy on the dubstep influence but they seem to jive really well with the rest of the album. see also: Artillery off Vicious Delicious

Varúð does it for me. The first time I properly heard that, and he came in with that single word, I almost cried.

Just managed to obtain one of their blankets, too, on the re-release about a quarter of an hour ago. This has made me very happy.
