What instrument do you own?

Postby yelly » Tue Nov 20, 2007 9:58 pm UTC

The title says it all.
I own a relatively large full size cello, that sounds like it could have been from Italy even though it was made by a (wonderful) violin maker in China (they have come a long way).
I also recently bought an American Standard Fender S1 Jazz Bass and I am very, very pleased with it. It is plugged into an Ibanez Sound Wave 35 bass amplifier.
There is a piano in my house, although I rarely play it (it is really useful though), and, well, I guess some would count my iMac as an instrument as well :)
What do you have?

EDIT: I forgot to mention my old $120 Washburn bantam-series XB102 bass.

Two electric guitars, one acoustic, a MIDI keyboard and a bunch of 'ethnic' instruments like a kalimba and a water stick (don't know the 'official' translation to english).

I, in the unusual instruments thread, wrote:I'm borrowing a theremin right now, though I'm not particularly good. There are a bunch of random African percussion instruments, a thumb piano, some recorders (unusual for someone out of grade school, eh? [two normal and one bass, for reference's sake]), a didgeridoo, and African gitar (yes, spelled like that), and a mandolin....
A picture of my music room, to give you an idea of my collection:

The clock is a circle of fifths! :D

(The flute pictured is broken and for decoration. My baby isn't pictured, nor the piano, nor the theremin, nor the broken bugle, nor the broken violin. I must be missing some past that, too.)

And an autoharp, an electric acoustic mandolin, an Appalachian dulcimer, and gong. Oh, and one of those guitars is a twelve-string. And we own in part a harpsichord. I think that's it.

I've got a ukulele that used to belong to my grandfather.
It's an old one made out of several different woods including mahogany.
I've had the neck repaired and have changed the strings so it is once again making music :)

Trombones. Two.

Are there any bassoonists out there who know if it's possible to buy just a bassoon mouthpiece? Because I don't need two, and am seriously considering turning one of them into a tromboon.

bbctol- Although tromboons are awesome(from what I've seen on the wikipedia page) and I do kind of want one, don't you need two trombones? One for marching and one to be actually good.

2 trombones (the basic one I started on(marching) and my dad's(which I use) ancient and rusty but still amazing and cool trigger one (everything except marching))
there's an electric keyboard in the house
I have basic theremin parts, I'm probably building it over the next holiday break

Awesome! The word you want to look for is "bocal". And yes, it's entirely possible. I could point you to some decent double reed websites, but in all honesty you probably don't want to spend anywhere near that amount of money on something like that and I'd recommend checking Ebay instead.

I've got a decent Fender Strat Copy, a cheap little Jupiter alto saxophone, and my main instrument: a Buffet E-11 soprano clarinet. I'm also currently borrowing an accordion from a friend and failing miserably at learning to play it.

An older tenor banjo,
A student violin,
An Epiphone acoustic guitar,
A Godin SDxt electric guitar,
A Hohner harmonica.

Despite my posession of these instruments, I have yet to develop any discernible musical talent.

Maybe once I find time to take lessons and practice...

I have an Alvarez Maplewood Acoustic guitar, a Realistic synth/keyboard from the eighties (which is *hilarious*), a slough of recorders and harmonicas, a pair of South American hand drums, and, of course, my oboe. Which is a Yamaha.

3 trombones (crappy student one, decent bach 42 that I use for everything, and a silver King peashooter from the 1930s)
1 banjo
1 crappy piano
1 old decrepit clarinet that I don't know how to play
1 instrument of unknown title and unknown function (seen below)

Right, here we go. At the moment in my apartment there is:

(My stuff)
1 Stanford acoustic guitar (my baby. I had it custom-made).
1 Duesenberg electric guitar (my other baby. Kinda like a Les Paul, but with a trem. Made in Germany.)
1 Vintage piece-of-shit acoustic for crappy gigs.
1 Ernie Ball Musicman Stingray bass. It's purty!
1 Cort fretless bass (don't use this much).
1 Technics digital piano. (P-50, if you're asking.)
1 Kay double bass (bought it a year ago).
Half a dozen harmonicas.
Fender Hotrod Deluxe guitar amp.
Fender Bassman bass amp.
Warwick 400w head and 4x10 cab.
Many, many effects pedals.
Oh, yeah, I have a Euphonium, too.

(My flatmate's stuff)
1 Landola jumbo acoustic.
1 LP Studio (maroon).
1 Fender Tele.
1 Mex Thinline Tele.
1 Strat with those odd Lace-Sensor pickups on it. Not used often.
1 Cayuela nylon string (recently arrived from Spain).
1 trumpet (he's learning).
2 Mesa-Boogie guitar amps. Aural sex, both of them.
1 really old Hiwatt 100w tube head. It's a bit sick at the moment, but a beauty.
1 Vox 2x10 cab.
Also shitloads of effects pedals.

He's also an engineer, so there's basically a recording studio knocking around here, too. All the mics/preamps/compressors/mixers etc. Best rates (and ears) in town.

I think I'll stop here...

I love the fact that you have a cello. I play the cello but I don't own one. Though I do have a dulicmer (a cheap one), maracas de méxico, a recorder....I think that's it.

Well, with me at uni, I don't have any instruments, but kicking about at home there is
A trumpet, a trombone, a tenor sax, a clarinet, lots of recorders, some mouth organs, some kazoos if they count as instruments, three acoustic guitars, a drum kit, whatever electric guitars and basses my bro happens to have in his room at the time, a keyboard, some penny whistles and lots of stuff to make the electric guitars sound loud and enough microphones to shake a stick at.

This is what I assumed you meant too,and I waould give the same advice. If you meant "reeds," then, well same thing...

As for me, I have a didgeridoo, an acoustic guitar, and my moms old flute and clarinet. Sadly, bassoons and contrabassoons are a wee bit out of my budget range... you know, any time you get into that "I could buy an instrument, or for the same amount of money, I could buy two cars" range...

I own a flute, panpipes, acoustic guitar, and wineglasses. Additionally, at some point in the future, I'll be inheriting a 120 year old piano, from before the number of keys was standardized.
I have yet to see any problem, however complicated, which, when you looked at it in the right way, did not become still more complicated.

A crappy Chinese-made plywood double bass (I forget the name of the maker, and I'm too lazy to go look it up. Can you tell I'm replacing it with something decent soon?)

An electronic keyboard (it's got weighted keys. Good enough for the tiny bit of piano I actually play)

A C-lead steel drum made by this guy who used to live in Rhode Island but now doesn't (I think he's in Pennsylvania or something now, but I'm not sure.)

I won't even get into the uncountable instruments owned by my family.

I got an almost complete drumset:) One of the tams fell of, but thats ok I dont play well enough yet to need it. I'll attach it later. I also don't have a crash cymbal, and that's a bit lame, but I guess my neighbours are happy about it. It was free anyway so I'm not gonna complain.

Also in "my" apartment atm are 2 electric guitars, 1 bass and 2 acoustic guitars. But I don't know how to play any of those and they aren't mine.

Recorder, clarinet, ocarina, harp, electric piano. I can play on average about two of them ;) Had a guitar once that I couldn't really play either.

Hopefully when I finish my renovation and set my piano up, I'll actually practise for a change. And I need to get my lazy arse in gear and send my harp off to be fixed, so I can learn it.

Of what's actually mine, I've got a pretty damn crap viola and a really good electric piano. Sure, the player piano functionality is long since dead, and based on the now-antiquated technology known as the 3.5" floppy disk, but hey. Sure, the piano hasn't moved since I got it, but it will when I finally get a place with enough room to keep it. I've been trying to hawk the viola, but let's face it, everybody can clearly tell it's crap. Perhaps I should try Mr. Wednesday's two man con--it'd be appropriate, as I seem to recall paying about $30 for it. Not sure it'd work, though. I should also have a toy recorder around here somewhere, but I cannot be assed to look for it (or really care). Oh, and I have a US Army regulation bugle around here somewhere, too. Can't play it, though.

In the house, we've also got a flute I'm not allowed to think about, a good violin and a good viola (too small for my use--it belongs to my sister, who was much better than me).

On my list I have:

Clarinet, (a buffet B12)

Stage Piano, a beaten up 12 year old yamaha clavinova pf P100, with poor action and response these days including a non functional A, and 2 semi functional Bbs. Now thats character.

I used to have a really old untunable piano (tune it one day, and it would have slipped back into its own pseudo tune the next), also featuring: a drawing pin in every felt hammer. Whilst ruining the already agey and corroded strings, it did have attack, perfect for ragtime music. Non working keys on this instrument include an F and an A, I broke the strings by playing them a touch loud...

... and a cheap guitar stolen from my brother when he got a decent acoustic to play on.
