Frustrated/Defeated lyrics

Postby johnie104 » Fri Aug 02, 2013 8:05 pm UTC

Hey everyone, let's see if you can help me out here.

I seem to really enjoy songs that have a singer sounded really frustrated, defeated or both. Some examples of this would be
Muse - Dead Star
Muse - Showbiz (This is incidentally one of my favorite live performances of any song ever)
Nada Surf - Popular
Tom Odell - Another Love
Some other Muse songs like Muscle Museum and Uno

It's not really about the content of the lyrics, but more of the style of singing.
I'm guessing someone will mention Nine Inch Nails, although I do like NIN, I don't love it. Not sure why though.
I can't really come up with other examples then the ones given above.
Does anybody have suggestions?

Despite all my rage, I'm still, just a rat in a cage.
... with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth, to tread the jeweled thrones of the Earth under his sandalled feet.

The singer from Tool and Perfect Circle has a nice angry voice.

A Perfect Circle: The Package - skip to the middleish endish for some nice "Take! What's! Mine!" action. :)

Ok, thanks for the suggestions, I've listened through them and:
- I don't really like The Smashing Pumpkins, the singer sounds weird to me.
- A Perfect Circle sounds a LOT like Tool. Although it is interesting music,it isn't really my thing.
- Chevelle sounds really good! I wonder why I never heard of them before. Definately gonna listen to more of their songs.

Thanks guys!

I don't think you could get much more defeated than Leonard Cohen - The Partisan.

But then I remembered this: A Silver Mt. Zion - Movie (Never Made). (although if you don't like Billy Corgan's voice... - if you don't find it annoying, I'll post more). And while I'm here, the first part of Godspeed You Black Emperor - Dead Flag Blues. It's basically a narrative about a post-apocalypse. (ASMZ are a Godspeed side-project).
I don't sing, I just shout. All. On. One. Note.

You want defeated lyrics?

Emilie Autumn has them in spades. I'm thinking What Will I Remember?, If I Burn, Gaslight, Shalott and Liar in particular.
my pronouns are they
