I'm looking for a Sad movie

Postby superglucose » Thu Sep 11, 2008 5:25 am UTC

My grandfather just died, and when something sad happens I like to watch a sad movie. It helps me cry and feel better.

What's extra special is my GF is coming up, so something sad but romantic is DEFINITLY pro. We'll probably both fall asleep during the movie, but any advice and help would be nice. I'd like just a list, don't worry about whether or not one or the other has seen it, with enough suggestions we'll find one or two ;-)

Thanks guys!

The Notebook?

Maybe a bad choice. I can feel my balls retracting and the collective of the internet flaming me.

Surprisingly enough, my father and GF both recommended it. And don't feel bad, I have a friend who's favorite movie is...

titanic. >.<

And he's pretty cool, so it's all good ;-)

Life is Beautiful

It's not primarily romantic, but there's some, and it's really rather cute and sad overall.

It's the first movie that ever made me bawl my eyes out at the end. (Current count: 5 movies)

Vertigo, Requiem for a Dream (for that matter, The Fountain), Crimes and Misdemeanors, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind... That last one might be the best choice, as the rest are more like soul-crushing than just plain melancholy.

The Fountain, Yes! Extra points because it discusses the folly of trying to never die, and never letting go of what you have.
Seriously, it is one of the single best films visually I have ever seen. Soundtrack is winnage too, and it's one of 3 films that made me cry. It has Love as well. (The bit with the ring is what really gets me- in a good way.)
I don't know if it's actually a "good" movie, but it is wothout a doubt one of my all time favorites.
GO WATCH IT. IT WILL HELP.

...Eternal Sunshine is recommended too.

Is Life is Beautiful that Italian movie about the Holocaust? If so, then add a second +vote.

Gloomy Sunday is both sad and romantic, but it's not in English so I'm not sure if that's a deterrent.

If you want soul-crushing sadness, I'd advise you to check out Grave of the Fireflies. It's animation, though, and in a foreign language, so I don't know whether that'd put you off or not. No romance whatsoever, but it's definitely the saddest thing I've ever seen. And you know how it ends from the start! (which just makes it so much worse)

Grave of the Fireflies is renowned as the one movie to sadden them all. I'd go for it.

Fourth'ing Grave of the Fireflies. It's not exactly romantic (Okay, it's not AT ALL.). But no movie has ever left me as crushed as that did. Saddest movie of all time? I think so.

you guys are trying to hard.

find any movie where a dog is one of the main "actors" in an action movie. that dog is fucking doomed. and if you don't cry when a dog bites it in a movie, then you aren't human.

Personally, I like Tequila Sunrise for sad and romantic. Of course, that movie is probably older than most of you.

Mel Gibson, Kurt Russel, and Michelle Pfeiffer at their absolute hottest. What could be finer?

Does Ghost Dog count?

Before Sunrise, which isn't very sad at all, followed by Before Sunset, which is one of the saddest fucking movies I've ever seen.

I...didn't feel sad at all in I Am Legend. I hope I'm not a spambot.

It's a really old movie, but "The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is pretty sad. IMDB page

Following IMDB recommendations, as is "Somewhere in Time." IMDB page

For that matter, "Ghost" is pretty sad. IMDB page

"Titanic"? IMDB page

"The Phantom of the Opera"? IMDB page

Here's one that is sad but romantic - Gone with the Wind. it is about 3.5 hours though, so you can count on falling asleep. Scarlett O'Hara starts out in the prosperous South and then the Civil War comes along.

Another recc would be to see the 1st season of Joan of Arcadia - almost every ep makes you cry.

Hero is a tragic tale, with elements of romance, and very very good.

Actually, if you watch the movie,
Spoiler:
her family keeps the estate through the whole movie. The tragedy is from losing several family members and husbands and unconnected love triangles and scenes of her caring for sick and injured people.

The Painted Veil was sad, but oddly romantic.

How about two dogs reassuring themselves as they consciously embrace the end after a life of literal torture?
The Plague Dogs *Sniffle*

Also, nthing the recommendation for the Fountain and Grave of the Fireflies.

So Superglucose, what did you guys end up watching?

Are Hindi films okay? Kal Ho Naa Ho made me cry repeatedly, and it's hugely romantic, though with a slightly uplifting, yet poignant, ending. Don't watch it if you don't want several scenes of dancing and such.

Oh god, I don't think I could even stand watching a movie like that. I would drown in my own tears. Now I have to watch it, though. I hope you're happy, dasknocker.
So it goes.

I think that Big Fish might be the perfect movie for you. The storyline is about a young man's father dying and the man trying to learn who his father really was, and there are definitely romantic elements. The ending is both elevating and heartbreaking.

Another suggestion would be Finding Neverland--again, a sad but uplifting story with overtones of many kinds of love.
