Que She-Ra, She-Ra

Postby Zohar » Mon Nov 26, 2018 6:28 pm UTC

Started watching the show this weekend, I think we finished four episodes so far. I find the animation quality a bit low (not very intricate or detailed), but sufficient. That's the case with another recent (pretty decent) animated Netflix show - The Dragon Prince.

Anyway, it's enjoyable so far! It seems like a bit of a mix of Steven Universe and Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I don't think this should would exist without either of those shows. I'll have to see where it goes, but for now - there are enough similarities to make me notice them, but it's refreshing enough (and Steven Universe has been on hiatus enough...) that I don't mind watching it.

The opening song is terrible, and I hope they stop showing the full magical girl transformation every single episode.

They show it maybe every other episode?

We binged it over the weekend. I'd say it's not quite as, say, the Voltron reboot, but then that show has had several seasons to build up its mythos. She-Ra is, so far, just a good kids' show with a nice amount of depth to it, including an interesting focus on friendship and trust that gives it a bit of a dynamic that's not just "these guys are good, these guys aren't".

With Holdak (the big-big bad) looking a bit like the Galra from Voltron, I wonder if they're leaving the door open for an eventual crossover, or it's just because of a shared team borrowing concepts and sketches from each other.

I heard Voltron is pretty good, I should give that a shot, too.

Nope, I just have a bad memory for names, apparently including fictional ones.

I wouldn't really compare it to Steven Universe or Avatar. I guess its not bad for a kids' show but I didn't really see anything deep or complex enough in it to hold the attention of an adult. Then again I just had it running in the background while doing other stuff so maybe I missed something very subtle.

I don't think there is a single episode where they didn't show it. At least its limited to once per episode.

They definitely had a few episodes with just her raising the sword and then just a shot of her as She-Ra.

I don't think this show has reached the heights of Avatar or Steven Universe, but it also only had 13 episodes so far. I'm very happy with what I've seen. Obviously Catra and Adora's relationship is at the center of this season, and I'd like to see more. A few things I was disappointed with or wanted to to learn more about...

(complete s1 spoilers)
Spoiler:
I understand Entrapta was a villain in the original show, but her switch to the horde seems very random and unjustified. Like there's one scene when Catra tells her her friends abandoned her and then she's fine with destroying the world? I was waiting for her to stop the attack somehow but no, she was really set on destroying Moon Bright. At this point the only reason the show seems to give for her being evil is "she's autistic". Like, yes, she has her own motivations for things she does, she basically wants to just do science, but her 180 is a bit too much.

Also Catra stated multiple times that she knows and understands the horde is evil, but we don't really delve into that. So she's just cool with doing evil things? She's obviously OK with killing many people, is she still trying to just become the most powerful person so she can do what she wants? And then what? Like it's not clear yet why she wants to rule over others at all...

Edit with future speculation based on S1 finale:
Spoiler:
Is Bow trans? At the end of the finale, when all the princesses hold hands to create the rainbow wave thing, Bow's heart thing clearly glows. In addition we've seen him wearing what looks a lot like chest binding when he took some clothes off.

Spoiler:
A lot of the characters are definitely queer-coded in different ways (Spinderella and Netossa felt very much like a couple to me, although
there was nothing explicit in it). Bow is definitely presented as being fairly non-binary in some fashion - his comment along the lines of "Everyone here is a Princess except me" early on in the show made me think he might have actually been leaning more towards wanting to be feminine. Hopefully, it's handled fairly nonchalantly whichever way it happens to be.

You probably should watch it, this is a good reboot - they really caught the feel of the original. The first season (along with a pilot episode) is pretty weak, though. Just get through it and enjoy the rest of the story.
I like how they expanded the storyline (it's not just about adventure anymore, but politics as well) and the whole setting in general. Animation is awesome and concept art (especially backgrounds) is astonishingly beautiful - a feast for the eyes.

Also wanted to say thanks for recommendation. Added She-Ra to my watch list.

I'm about three episodes in on Voltron. It's OK so far, it's good to hear it improves.

She pretty early on shows she only cares about being able to play with new technology.

"destroying the world": it is getting a really interesting result when you pull power out of this crystal. How cool! Earthquakes, freak weather. This is really neat.

And her new friends? They have the *BEST* toys to work with.

I mean, if she personally runs into her old friends, she'll probably feel conflicted. A little hurt too. But that isn't why she's doing what she's doing, it is basically the same thing she was doing before.
One of the painful things about our time is that those who feel certainty are stupid, and those with any imagination and understanding are filled with doubt and indecision - BR
