Will the XKCD populace stand for this?

Farmville cannot be allowed to beat Portal.

Is there any bigger waste of time than an internet popularity contest?

Valve is going to win for sure. In the previous round they rallied the Steam army, and we all remember the last time they did that in a popularity contest.

Ah. Well, to be fair, this thread was about Valve vs. Zynga, and nobody had actually even mentioned Bioware until just now (including you), so it was a pretty reasonable assumption that I made.

Not like we need a second thread for Valve vs. Bioware though. Anyway, when was the last time Valve released a big title (besides Left 4 Dead)? Portal came out like a month before Mass Effect 1, and since then Bioware not only got ME1 out the door, but ME2 AND Dragon Age. I'll vote for Valve the day they figure out "episodic" doesn't mean "whenever you feel like it". Until then, Bioware all the way.

I'd rather they wait until it's done properly instead of rushing to meet some arbitrary deadline.

So would I, but it shouldn't take 2-3 years to develop a 10 hour episode of a game.

It's an internet poll. Valve is losing, why should people care?

Does it even matter if Valve ends up losing? Just because it loses one competition doesn't mean Zynga is a better development company. Have people forgotten the screeds of awards they won for Half-Life 2?

I wager you this: In ten years time, which developer will people recognise more, Valve or Zynga?

Far out, I hadn't even heard of Zynga until I was emailed a similar cry for help from one of my Valve-devoted friends.

To be honest, as far as I'm concerned, I care more about wanting Zynga to lose than about wanting Valve to win. I don't care about Valve's overall success, but Zynga is just full of dicks.

Speaking as an actual member of the Escapist, I can opine that the whole March Mayhem competition is a bad joke. Every time it comes around, it ends up with more pointless bickering, probations, suspensions, what have you. I don't know why they still do it, other than money.

Anyway, Valve won in the end, but still, I pride myself on not taking part in it.

Every game is X with progress bars. Make it to the midpoint of a level? Progress bar is half full! Get your enchanting skill up? Progress bar! Master the rocket launcher? PROGRESS BAR!

Fuck, Tetris - get a new high score?

PROGRESS BAR!

So what you're saying is that ProgressQuest is the most pure game ever?

Code: Select all

enum ಠ_ಠ {°□°╰=1, °Д°╰, ಠ益ಠ╰};
void ┻━┻︵╰(ಠ_ಠ ⚠) {exit((int)⚠);}

It's distilled gaming, stripped of interactivity beyond the choice to play or to not play.

I'm saying that ProgressQuest counts as a game just as much as Dwarf Fortress, Fallout 3, Planescape:Torment, Tetris, Super Smash Mario Mouth 64 Ultra, or any other game out there.

Raph Koster says a game is anything that teaches us something, anything at all, even if it's just that if I press X when the frog gives me a sideways glance the little number in the corner of my screen goes up. Sid Meier said a game is a series of choices. I'm not terribly familiar with farmville but I imagine it at least satisfies both of these.

I think the problem arises not strictly when everything can be indicated by a progress bar, but when everything is indicated by a progress bar.

Where 'problem' here refers to the game sucking.

No, the point was that in every game there are progress bars, it doesn't matter whether or not they're indicated. But that's just obvious, since every game has a beginning and an end.

We have a winrar!

But yes, Farmville offers you choices. The path of crops gives you cash faster, but requires that you be tied to your computer as they rot in the field if not harvested. Animals can be maintained in a "ready to harvest" state indefinitely, but the payoff is far less than what crops bring in.

There are those chained to the game who set alarms in order to make sure they harvest and replant as swiftly as possible. This is no different than Everquest and WoW players setting alarms and schedules to take down world bosses or set up dungeon raids as quickly as they're refreshed. And much like MMOs, there is no win condition. At no point does a screen pop up saying "You've won! Play again!". Since you set your own win condition, it may simply be to draw Mario on the ground by using various crops as pixels. It may be to have the giant mansion thing. It may be to simply have 20 cows.

So, yes.. Farmville is a game.

All of the Myspace Zynga app(or at least most) were ruined by hackers. They don't deserve a win.

If you have a Facebook account, it's impossible to not have heard of Zynaga. Anyway, I am glad to see casual games are starting to make a name for themselves. Currently, I play Treasure Isle and I enjoy every minute of it. :D
