Diablo clones to play while waiting for Diablo 3

Postby Altercator » Mon Sep 22, 2008 4:51 pm UTC

While waiting for Diablo 3, any Diablo clones besides Diablos 1 & 2 that you would recommend to play?

Personally, I'd recommend Titan Quest. There are a few graphical bugs unless patched, and unfortunately, Iron Lore, TQ's designer, close it's doors. But there are some pros, like you don't have to waste gold on portal scrolls, just turn on the portal stone yourself. Also, it's skill based, so you can assign yourself to any skill of your choice. Even better, you can have two jobs per character, and if you don't like that job, you can change it, but for a price.

The other Diablo clone worth playing are of course Dungeon Siege 1 & 2. Best I could say that it's made by Chris Taylor, dude behind Total Annihilation, Supreme Commander & soon Demigod.

On the console front, there's Champions of Norrath & Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. They're average, but worth scratching that Diablo itch.

Anything else?

Try Sacred. I enjoyed the first alot. The sequel is due out soon I think.

I rather enjoyed Hellgate:London, though obviously it's an FPS rather than having an overhead, 3'rd person perspective, many gameplay features remain the same (right down to doing runs of easily-accessed bosses for loot).

Fate is a sort of cutesy version of Diablo. I played it and enjoyed it.

There is no other game like Diablo II for scratching that Diablo itch. I don't care how many times you've played it, you can play it again.

I liked TitanQuest and Sacred. I wouldn't call Hellgate: London a Diablo Clone.

Modding Diablo and Diablo2 is also an option. I've played Diablo2 with Median2008, it was cool. I might try one of the mods for the original diablo someday.

I was saddened when the Phrozen Keep went away.

If you haven't tried Triglav, check it out (won't link because I don't think I have 5 posts yet, but google for "Triglav RPG" and you'll get it). It's a surprisingly addictive browser-based (DHTML, even! Not flash!) action RPG with three classes and a tower full of baddies you have to climb / clear. Some puzzle-type stuff in there too, iirc, it's been a few years since I played it.
"Ai, ai!" wailed Legolas. "A Balrog! A Balrog is come!"
