should have known to check the Steam Forums first, it seems there are several messages, including a dozen or so SSTV encoded images.

Still no idea what it means though, Portal 2? HL2 ep3? L4d3? it seems only time will tell.

I favour the "Portal prequel to be announced at GDC '10" theory.

Optimism: Maybe a new bundle pack? With Episode 3 too!

Realism: Maybe they'll announce Portal 2 soon. That will be Valve soon, so probably the end of the year.

If it's a bundle pack, I would expect left 4 dead 1/2 to feature in it too. I'm not entirely sure why, but it seems to make sense.

Anyway, my Realism: Valve is fucking around and doesn't want you to know what to think. I honestly don't care to guess :|

"Valve soon" is "end of next year. Maybe."

Summary from here:
Spoiler:
-Portal gets surprise update yesterday afternoon
-People see new mystery achievement
-People play and see the radio in the beginning room now has a green light
-Carry it around and notice it makes strange broadcast interference noises in certain places
-Locate and place all 26 of these mystery radios for achievement
-Smart people yank wav files out of game content folders and run them through steganography programs
-Produces 26 weird cryptic image files in a numbered sequence
-Some dude runs the number string through an md5 hash translator and gets a landline number
-Internet traces it to Kirkland, WA (near Valve HQ)
-People find out its not a phone/fax line but a data line hosting a BBS and telnet it
-Use a clue from one of the files to figure out the BBS user/password login info
-End up with a bunch of weird ASCII artwork

A few posts later in that thread, people post some pieces of text from the ASCII artwork that contain some very, well, Portally humour - these two are my favourites so far:

A lot of you have been raising concerens of the so called "dangers" of what
we're all doing here. The beancounters (wut) told me to tell you that as of
today, testing will no longer be as mandatory, or as dangerous. That's not
gonna happen. And here's the reason:

Science isnt about why, it's about why not. You ask 'why is so much of our
science dangerous?' I say, Why not marry safe science if you love it so much.
In fact why not invet a special safetey door that won't hit you in the butt on
your way out cause you are fired.

Plus, in the event of your death, I personally guarentee that, thanks to the
form you were required to sign this morning, your family will not suffer the
indignities of a long and costly legal battle against Aperture Science. Trust me,
I am rich, and it is a burden I would not wish on anyone.

Loads more currently going on at the Steam forums... I haven't yet dug through those threads myself, though...

Ok this is a bit off-topic but i don't think i should make a new thread for it. Is half life 1 necessary to play half life 2? ( i mean from a plot perspective) because this thread has made me want to play them (i never played them due to having pcs that couldn't handle them when they were released :/

I just picked up half life 2 and was fine, but you probably want to read a plot summary.

Yeah, you only really need the vaguest of ideas of the plot of HL1 to understand HL2. And to be fair, I played HL2 first and I didn't feel like any of my questions were explained by playing HL1. They're not that dependent upon each other.

I think HL1's plot was further developed in the add ons, i was totally confused about the HL2 plot after playing only the HL1 plot. like, the nameless doctors suddenly being single characters and the "barneys" now becoming Barney. also who the hell are the combine?? i only found all that out by reading the wiki. its possible i just didn't pay attention to HL1's plot well enough, but i was damn confused when the first Vortigaut didn't attack me in HL2. HL1' plot was seems much simpler to me. Lab accidentally opens hole in space to new dimension, creatures from that dimension attack , you try to close the hole in space while trying to not get killed by the government cover-up hit squad. all the other details were added on later to milk a single game into a franchise.

as for all the portal fun, are these updates only for pc, or are they good for the xbox version as well?

ok im starting to interested in this ARG. why is there no activity here on XKCD. it involves OLD SCHOOL COMP TECH PPLS!!

the ascii dumps, has any one noticed there seem to be incomplete images on the tops and bottoms of some of the dumps? has anyone tried piecing them together.

is it confirmed that he progress bar is moving lineally? i know the current consensus is that it is but has it been confirmed for real? could it be a hit counter to the BBS? the bar goes up to 78 not 100 so it doesn't look like a percentage.

I read the same post, and last I checked they still haven't done many major updates. At the same time, several extra levels of portal were made available over xbox live. But basically ALL TF2 updates have been held back. There aren't any items beyond the ones you start with, engineers dispensers only have one level etc, no cart maps etc.

Also, try extracting the sound files (You'll need a GCF extractor) and running the dinosaurfizzle sound files through a FFT. You can barely make out a picture that seems sort of intentional.

I can't see it, myself: as far as I can see, it's facing the wrong way and an entirely different shape. If I recall correctly, the logo has a single fairly steep slant leading to the top uninterrupted on the right and a sudden drop that makes a right angle with the ground on the left, but this has far too many alternations between vertical climbs and slopes (if that made any sense).

What I'm seeing in that with the landscape orientation is some kind of building -- though not fitting with the Aperture Science style we've seen, we've never seen a facility from the outside and this may not even belong to Aperture -- with the pair of less steep slopes on the left serving as some kind of support or pipe leading into the building. If I remember, I'll draw an outline of what I mean on the image and hopefully clarify what I'm trying to say.

edit: Just having looked around the Internet a little, it seems that there is an even more likely match for the spectrograph.
Spoiler:
It's the Citadel.

I'm stuck on level 18 of Portal! I think I have to put a hole in the low platform, and one above the window near the moving wall where I entered, and shoot out to the other side of the room where the portal proof rooms are, but this works only very occasionally, then once i get there I hit the button..... Then I'm ASSUMING I have to put a hole in the moving wall, jump out of it, and RIGHT QUICK put another portal in the low floor gain, fall through that and get shot to the higher hole on the opposite wall because the pannel is angled now, but I don't see how it's really possible.
I hate the puzzles that are about being fast and accurate instead of just figuring out how to do it, they mostly make me think there must be a more correct solution. Anyway, is this right?

You are right.
Even after coming back to this level 4 times I still manage to trap me because of the tall button, and the very far concrete panel on the other side which I always miss out.

Solution for the part you're stuck on below...
Spoiler:
That's sort of how you want to do it if you're doing a time challenge. If you mean the part where you press the small button and the wall in front of you moves to show a room full of turrets with poison water at the bottom, then...
Press the button, go in and move to the left. First you want to use portals to redirect the high-energy pellets onto the turrets. Once those are gone, you will notice that there is a hand-button above your head. This opens the door to where the pellet is supposed to go.

Open a portal on any place where the pellet hits, and the other portal in front of the door to the pellet receiver. Once the pellet is through the portal, open one on the wall next to you and one above that, so you can reach the hand-button and open the door, letting the pellet hit its target. You have to open the door after redirecting the pellet because it stays open for a very short time.

This starts a moving platform in the center of the room. Get onto it and then drop down to the lower one of the two rooms. There is another hand-button which opens the same moving wall you came through. Press it, wait for the moving wall to stop, and put a portal on it. Put another portal on the wall next to you, come out the angled wall, go over to the low platform to your right, put a portal on it and jump into it, and you'll fling to the room with the cube.

Grab the cube, take the moving platform back to the other side of the room, drop the cube there. Take the platform back to the lower room with the hand-button, open it, portal back to the side with the opened wall, and take your cube through.

There's more to that chamber, in which it is about being fast and accurate, but it's pretty easy to figure out.

So in case you don't make it through the testing, Goodbye!

Pretty sure the achievements list is as it's ever been: game completion on the linear path, scores on advanced/challenge chambers, knocking off the cameras, getting the long jump/long drop. The only new one is that 'transmission' which apparently requires a metric tonne of faffing about with the Portal 2 ARG.

Actually, there IS something new.
Spoiler:
Now, after you beat GLaDOS, from behind you you hear something along the lines of "Thank you for assuming the Party Escort Submission Position" in a very metallic male voice (probably used the same tech as they did to get GLaDOS's voice when designing the game). And you're dragged backwards (you never see the android) as the screen darkens.
