Much ado about RAM

Postby Kergadon » Thu May 29, 2014 1:32 pm UTC

Hey guys,
I got a new laptop recently and I want to upgrade the RAM from the 4 gigs it has now (2 soldered in, 2 removable) to 10 gigs by putting an 8 gig module. The question I have is, given that I have several different types of RAM to choose from which RAM will preform best? According to Kingston's memory search tool, both part number KAS-N3C/8G and part number KVR16S11/8 will work with my computer but I just have no idea what the difference between the two is. KAS-N3C/8 lists "DDR3, 1600MHz, Non-ECC, CL11, X8, 1.5V, Unbuffered, SODIMM, 204-pin" as the specs where as KVR16S11/8 has "DDR3, 1600MHz, Non-ECC, CL11, 2R, X8, 1.5V, Unbuffered, SODIMM, 204-pin". So I guess the crux of my question is what the heck is 2R, and for that matter C11 Non-ECC and SODIMM?
Thanks for the help in advance.
The new computer is an ASUS Zenbook model UX32A.

Phoronix got some rather alarming numbers with almost exactly that setup, which make me disinclined to buy anything with soldered RAM.
I don't think the tiny difference between those sticks will be at all significant.

Many details are on Wikipedia. CL is CAS latency, non-ECC is the opposite of ECC.

The R and X parameters threw me a bit, but I found http://serverfault.com/questions/273931 ... s-2rx8-ram .
