if you think you might regret it, don't get it done. Permanent thing is permanent. (unless you want laser removal, which I am told is incredibly painful and really expensive)

Yeah, don't be one of those guys who gets something from a currently trendy movie, book, or band. Inception is a good movie, maybe a great movie, but it's not Star Wars. People aren't going to remember it in 34 years.

Cursed logical reasoning behind not getting the tattoo. I suppose a spinning top tattoo would be slightly hard to explain in 20 years. Sigh.
I actually contemplated a Star Wars tattoo instead when I had that same thought :P

Was this supposed to say "insha'allah"? If so, I'm afraid there's a typo or two.

It does, and you're probably trying to read it in Arabic rather than Persian. It was designed for me by actual Afghans, so I'd say their understanding of the language is pretty solid.

ان شاء الله = Persian (Farsi) for enshallah
إن شاء الله = Arabic for inshallah

Here's a basic rule for tattoos: Don't get a word tattooed on you unless you know exactly what the word is, what each character is, and how each character is correctly drawn. And as Felltir indicates, important religious terms like this tend to be identical between Arabic and Arabic-influenced languages like Persian.

Yeah, it would also be spelled to match the Arabic edition in Urdu. I'm afraid you're an ayin short of an Insha'Allah.

god willing I will pass my test.... or god willing I will be showing up to that party.

Lol... I dont know what to say to you... lol... smoking pot does shit to ppllol... god willing everything will be okay.

It does not mean if it is the will of god... in the sense that you might have taken it to mean that if it is the will of god I accept it as it is... you probably took it to mean something like if it is the will of god for me to live then I ought to live... its not tht kind of a "if it is the will of god"... rather it is god willing I will get my hmwrk done. lol or with the will of god I will get me hmwork dne. It is an exprssion for the occurance or completion of something in the future... rather than something in the past or present complete.

My Arabic is rusty, but I don't think there's supposed to be an ayn. There's a missing hamza (the thing that sort of looks like the top half of an ayn), and there's a 'ta' instead of a 'sheen'. And the 'Allah' part is kind of unreadable. My guess is that the initial design was right, but whoever actually did the tattooing just imitated the shapes without knowing the script.

(Yes, I read it in Arabic, but the scripts for Arabic, Urdu, Farsi etc. are nearly identical, except for phonemes that occur in one language but not the others.)

Err, yeah, that. In Urdu it's only ever a diacritic, so I misread it.

I don't see the ta that you're talking about, though.

Third letter from the right. Tha, actually, not ta. Three dots. If the bit on the bottom was in a w-like shape, it would be 'sheen'. Since it's flat, it's 'tha'.

EDIT: oh, I see why you might miss that. Hindi (and presumably Urdu) doesn't have that sound, so Urdu re-uses that letter for 'se'. Still not the right sound, though.

In Urdu, at least, it's very common to write shin as a long flat curve like that. If it were a se, it would just be a bump in front of the alif, as in ثا.

Edit: In fact, the little squiggle after the alif looks like how I might write a hamza in a hurry. Since my dictionary (and Wikipedia) seem to indicate that spelling can, in fact, vary regionally, couldn't this actually be a valid-if-less-common rendering of the phrase?

Behzad (The Afghan who helped design the tattoo) insists that they are different, but I'm not sure how much of that is influenced by nationalistic pride. :P

Dari and Tajik are both dialects of Persian. And there's no reason to call Persian "Farsi", unless you also call German "Deutsch" on a regular basis.

My dad designed the tat for Spambot5546.

There is no ayn in Insha'allah.
As Felltir pointed out in Farsi the first Hamza is generally omitted.
The "Sheen" in Nastaliq calligraphy is almost always written as a long curve rather than the "Sheen" with "teeth" as in Arabic.

Dari and Farsi are dialects of the same language, not one of the other. However they are different as a comparison of Rumi/Bedil and Sa'adi/Ha'afiz would show.

Does colour hurt worse than monochrome? I've no idea why it should but one hears things. I want to get my ankle one coloured in but I am a big wuss.

Both of my tattoos are full color, but I wouldn't expect whether it's color or black & white to have any effect on the pain.

I think the main contributors for that are:
Where the tattoo is located -- my understanding is the more tissue/muscle/skin whatever the less it'll hurt. That is, something right on top of a bone is probably going to hurt a lot worse. A friend had something tattooed around his elbow and he said that was pretty painful.
Also how much filling needs to be done. If it's just an outline it probably won't be too bad, but if there's a decent chunk of the design that needs to be filled in solid the artist will probably use a larger needle.

It's a square acreage sort of thing - for a monochrome, you usually just do the outline, some shading and call it done. The "white" is generally the skin color of the person wearing it, while the black is the black tattooed ink.

When you do color, you now have to fill in that whole area with.. the color. Filled in black would have the same effect, pain-wise. It also apparently hurts more when the needle goes over an area recently tattooed, in the same way that stabbing at an open wound hurts more than making a brand new one. I get that information from my wife, though, as she gets tattoos and I do not, and says it only really really hurts when they re-tattoo the line or whatever from a week ago because it hasn't fully healed.

Ah, that all makes sense. It's quite a small tattoo but it is right over my ankle. It's not recent, so that will help by the sounds of it.

I think I will just suck it up and get it done.
