So I can see why the gold, silver and bronze medals might be different (for the Earth total) because of multiple medals being given for ties and dead heats in some event but roughly 50 more bronze than gold or silver? Something seems wrong there.

A lot of the head-to-head competition sports award two bronzes for both losing semifinalists without having a 3rd/4th place match. Boxing, for example, which has something like 12 events, awards bronze to two boxers per event.
