Mirror Site?

Postby Xaith » Wed Dec 06, 2006 6:34 pm UTC

Hey everyone. I've been following these comics for about a month now and I can't stop laughing. Very nice work.

The reason for this topic is that I have just recently come across what appears to be an exact copy of this site. The only difference is the URL.

My question is, is this a project of xkcd, such as a site move, or has someone gone an copied this site without permission? I searched everywhere on this site to find an explanation and couldn't.

Site found here.

The new URL is needless to say, very "creative".

That name is rather creative, its too bad I'm at work or i could check on it's "authenticity as a mirror".

That's really odd... as far as I can tell, it seems to be an exact mirror. He isn't trying to take credit for xkcd's work or anything, either... Very weird.

Oh, is it actually a mirror? I figured with a URL like that, this Xaith was just a bot-d00d (first post and all).

I am so confused as to why someone would do this.

I thought I was onto his game when I went to the store and it was on the cu. site (http://cu.nniling.us/store/). So I figured he was scamming, but the paypal appears to go to xkcd's account as well.

Even the http://cu.nniling.us/about works.

I am gonna e-mail munroe and see if he knows anything.

So do the forums have contributors that are our exact opposites?

Have we opened up a trans-dimensional rift?

I kind of think this Xaith dude is a bot, but one who mirrors sites and then posts about it.

Actually, that's from an alternate universe which is different but similar to ours. Think the Quantum Mirror in SG-1.

No, I'm no bot. I just happened to stumble across that site. It seemed weird, since, as you said, the site is an exact copy of this. I figured this would be as good a time as any to register here.

I thought everyone already knew about that domain? It appears to be an exact copy, because it refers to the same server.

I would say that I didn't even know I could get here from 'xkcd.com', and that I'd always used cu.nniling.us, but that's not really true. Perhaps I use cu.nniling.us more in future

The registrant of xkcd.com is "Domains by Proxy, Inc.". This could make the search a tad more challenging. Nevertheless, I am on the hunt.

I found that site, as well as this site using a program called Stumble Upon. I'm sure many of you have heard of it.

(Now that I think of it, I really do sound like a bot.) :)

I tried a few things, but all were unsuccesful.

1. Since cu.nniling.us links directly to forums.xkcd.com, i tried a google search "link:forums.xkcd.com". That didn't return any helpful results.

2. I came across this site: http://www.evilgenius.org/evil/chat/6 which has a lot of great ideas! but didn't help much.

3. Googled "link:ns1.scienet.net" but didn't return anything

4. Thinking of other things now...

EDIT:I am guessing that there is a robots.txt file or something similar in use so that the sites aren't indexed?

They are, for the most part. Try using the Internet Archives on this site.

I've been trying to use g o o g l e cache, but all I've been able to come up with are snapshots of his /mrtg directory.

Edit:Damn, this would be so much easier if he didn't have multiple layers of obfuscation built-in to specifically deter this type of behavior...

So I just stumbled across this in the last few pages of topics and it seemed interesting enough to be huge-bump-worthy.

Has anyone else stumbled across any of these sites? It seems the search is still incomplete.

I hadn't read this particular thread before, but I did know about the site...I'm not sure whether I heard about it on the fora or whether someone else told me about it...

At any rate, it's a(n awesome) reference to Science Fair. Presumably most people already realized that, though.

Somebody brought up the domain again in today's comic thread, so I just found this thread. The notion that there are more of these domains infuriates me, because there should be a way to find them!

Eager for a treasure hunt, I had a go, but all I found was what appears to be another xkcd easter egg, and has only been google indexed on cu.nniling.us:

invest in burlap... start of fortune

Perplexingly enigmatic...

So.. yeah, while checking the DNS registration and e-mailing Randal and all that gives you a definite answer... am I the only one who's first instinct was to ping the two and see if the IP is the same?

...which it is, in case you're curious.

That's no guarantee, since I think that 208.122.19.56, xkcd's IP, serves the same website no matter what host is requested - for example you can just request http://208.122.19.56/. So you can still use your own nameservers to set up an xkcd domain mirror.
