Twitter-like service for sending alerts by SMS?

Postby Rippy » Fri Jul 16, 2010 7:12 pm UTC

My university/city has a parkour club, and regularly people decide spur-of-the-moment to head out somewhere in the city and explore. So what someone tried was creating a twitter account and distributing the login info: everyone can receive alerts from it on their phone, but to post things they need to physically be at a computer which is inconvenient (you can only tie one phone to a twitter account).

I'm wondering if anyone knows of something a little similar, but where anyone in the group can send an alert to the rest.

Computer programmer answer go!
Hmmm, if you can code and have a computer you can leave on, you could do something with twitter, by using the API.
have a central twitter account that everyone subscribes to.
and have it detect and echo messages people send to it.
That way people can update it from their mobile phones (using twitter), and get messages from it on their mobile phones.

You can set up an automatic retweeter using Spotd - you create a Twitter account and register it with Spotd, which then uses the Twitter API to retweet anything that tweeted @youraccount.

The easiest way I can see it being done is to send an SMS message via e-mail. It gets a little tricky, but you would need the person's cell phone number and their cell phone service provider. Then all you do is send the text to their phone number by typing the e-mail address as areacodephonenumber @ You would have to remember to use the area code as part of the phone number. For example, if you live in the metro Atlanta area (near where I live), your cell phone number's area code is 770, and your provider is Verizon, it would be 7705555555 @

Expanding upon the last reply:

Get the email address from everybody's phone and set up a group email address. Also, buy a domain name for your club. I've done it with Google Apps before, and you end up with an email address such as Then whenever someone wants to send out a group text, just send a text to the group email you created. It will be forwarded to everybody. With Google, you can even set it up so only members of the group can text the group email.
