XKCD inspires Instructable

Postby Kiteman » Fri Nov 27, 2009 7:48 pm UTC

Hello, XKCD!

I'm a long-time reader, but new forum poster.

I've just browsed your forums, and saw a lot of comments about the SkiFree F-key pendant. I thought you might like to know that there is a project to make one over on Instructables.com. A simple project, but we thought it was cool enough to feature on our front page.

What's extra cool is the fact that the Maker saw the strip, created the pendant, wrote the Instructable and got it published all on the same date as the strip was published.

Have a look:

Also, who are you trying to flatter by referring to (someone) as 'The Maker'? Sounds like something from Max Lucado  :P

Call it a conceit of the site - people who Make stuff, mod stuff, hack stuff are Makers. If you follow instructions closely,if you stick to the recipe, then you just make stuff. If you add your own touch, if you express yourself in things, then you Make stuff.

Have a look at the site, or at Make magazine, to see what I mean.

Kiteman!

I think your instructables are pretty cool, and your comments are all really insightful.

I'm megziewoodles on instructables. I only have one of them, but I like to browse the site a lot.

Thanks, Meowgan.

Have you seen that Sunbanks has just posted another XKCDian (is that a word?) project?

I wonder if this is the start of a trend?

I sure hope so!

I actually didn't see the Instructable until Friday, because I don't go on Instructables often, but I made mine with a soldering iron and some thread right after I saw the comic at 8:30 in the morning on Wednesday. I think Lithium Rain might have gotten it first, though, on two grounds:

1) She actually made an entire guide to it, and
2) I think she might have gotten a earlier start.

Mine took about ten minutes, because I had to dig up a keyboard and spool of white thread and heat up the iron.

I have also considered making several other xkcd-related objects, but that is often difficult. I have a [CITATION NEEDED] sign, and I had some Cory Doctorow apparel for a while, but many things (i.e. Pillow Talk mattress) are kind of expensive.

By the way, I'm Okapi on 'Ibles as well. I have no instructables of my own, and I have made almost two replies. I made an account just to argue with someone about entropy and electric cars.
