Somebody is BORED on the INTERNET!

Postby Chfan » Mon Jun 22, 2009 12:35 am UTC

So, when you guys aren't browsing the fora, what sorts of things do you like to do to entertain yourselves on the internet?

I tend to go on YouTube and search for things I'll never find.
Just FYI, the guy isn't avatar isn't me. But he seems pretty cool.

I read random blags, and lots of little "sound bite" type of sites like Not Always Right and FMyLife. I soon run out of sites to visit and go back to whatever I was supposed to be doing, or just sit there doing nothing for a while.

I have a few boards up at any one time and usually go back and forth. I also listen to pandora. When all of this fails me I end up playing solitaire.

Every once in a while I'll remember things like FML or TV tropes and spend a good hour doing that. I also try to follow links to something else interesting, like new webcomics or an interesting blog. Most of my time on the internets is spent on either these forums or the adult swim forums. Of course, the adult swim forums tend to get boring after a while, and there's a ton of mindless crap. Still, sometimes mindless indulgence is fun too.
Oh. Well that's alright then.

FMyLife, Wikipedia, here, or play on Kongregate. Other than that, I may sometimes venture to Rock Band (Now I can play proficiently on expert on 3/4 instruments, thank you Summer!), or commercial sites (ThinkGeek, Woot!, SonyStyle) for unnecessary items that look cool that I'll never buy.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, one of my friends usually resorts to YouTube searches like "Badger fighting cobra," or "Praying Mantis vs. Scorpion," or MMA things. I never would have thought that badgers would be that vicious!

I do find that I am more bored lately, and the only real cure (Linux, so no real options for computer games, and also limits me to not listening to music) is to go outside, go to a friend's house, swim, or do something remotely productive.

Amazingly enough, I just found this post when I was bored enough to want to go back and play an online MMORPG with leveling and stuff, just to ward off the boredom...

Lately I seem to be meeting Strangers on omegle and then transferring them to my secret omegle-only MSN account for more chatting.
It's an awkward but interesting solution to the problem of currently having no friends living near me. (There's one, and they're on vacation)

Yeah, I've got about 60 webcomics that I check for updates. The rest is reading XKCD forums or playing some free browser games on Kongregate. I have other games I would be interested in but I won't let myself play them in the hope that I'll actually do some work while at the office.

Thanks to zohar I've just spent the last hour reading through Questionable Content comic strips. I'm pretty sure I'll be reading it for a while.

Happy to oblige. Gunnerkrigg Court is AWESOME and WONDERFUL, though, while Questionable Content is merely cool and fun (although there were some really emotional bits in that comic, he can write quality drama when he wants to).

Well now I'm invested in QC, so it will be a while before I'm able to do anything else. I tend to get invested in anything with any semblance of a plot, so now I have to know where this goes :P

QC is quite good. I originally found it in the links from xkcd.

Oh so this. When I first heard of Gunnerkrigg I spent the entire day reading every one from the start. And QC is just fab (except Dora's new hair.)

Re FMyLife, it gets kinda boring after a while. I find My Life Is Average, and TextsFromLastNight much more amusing.

I hadn't heard of Gunnerkrigg Court until now, and I doubted the above statement. But then I went there and ended up reading the first 14 chapters of it in a near-hypnotic trance. (And now I agree completely.)

So, thanks for that. I think. :P

As far as arcs go, I really can't overrecommend Achewood, which is one of the most hilariously consistent, inventive and relevant strips I've ever met. The prose is pure poetry, inherent contradiction in terms notwithstanding.

If I'm bored on the internet, I go here. TVtropes is really a good resource to kill time, but it comes with a warning: It is freaking HARD to stop browsing, and the wikiwalks there are even worse than the ones on wikipedia.

I... I just got an idea. NotTotalBastards.com, a site to share stories that prove that Humanity isn't composed entirely of total bastards, wherein you can read stories of people in inconvenient to completely fucked situations that get help from complete strangers with no expectation of any sort of reward or whatever.

.....

Why do I have a feeling it'd shut down in about six months due to lack of content?
