The power to intuitively know where things are happening that would require the services of superheroes, as well as a general idea of how tough the situation is and what sort of talents might be required to deal with it. They call me... The Dispatcher.

My other superpower would be a gun. So that when the villians corner me and taunt me for having a power which I cannot use to defend myself I will shout "MY OTHER SUPERPOWER IS GUN!" and shoot their faces.

Immortality. The real kind, where you live at your peak age and cant be killed by anything and can contain all knowledge you acquire without memory limits. Im just to curious for one lifetime.

The other would be the ability to pull exact change for anything i pay for just by reaching into one of my pockets or any pocket like object/hiding place.

Super-ish Powers

Postby sir2you » Fri Oct 02, 2009 3:59 am UTC

I think we can all agree that it would be awesome to fly like superman or turn invisible, but those are dime a dozen. We see those in cheesy comic book movies all the time.

Lets hear what abilities you would get if could. It has to be less than a superpower, but be creative. You can still make it cool.

Example: I'd like to have amazing vision, like 'read a newspaper from the other end of this hallway here' good.

Another one: I'd like to be able to whistle perfectly on tune for a very large range.

Some sort of language recognition power, in that by hearing a five minute conversation, I could understand the entire language by extrapolation or some such.

Failing that, I've always thought of photographic memory to be pretty advantageous, especially with regards to exams.

I already have very mild super powers.

I am the child whisperer, I can find things in kitchens, I can turn string into 3 dimensional objects and I can solve the rubik's cube in under a minute.

Here is a relevant video: David Doherty, very mild superpowers.

The ability to sleep and become rested while staying conscious.

This would be great, because I want to lay down when I'm tired, but every time I wake up, I'm STILL tired, and I have to go do something, so I never get to enjoy just laying in bed.

Not even over the summer, because then my mom will yell at me, and my friend will ask why I can't hang out until 2 or 3 in the afternoon.
Why is sleep so complicated? :(

Alternately, the ability to have a consistent sleep schedule. I only go to sleep when I'm tired, so I wish my body would become tired automatically near an appropriate bedtime. Not 6 in the morning.

The ability to detect animals (and ID them) telepathically over a range of 100 m.

The ability to control animal minds (so they will finally do what I f***king want during an experiment).

The ability to go without oxygen and withstand crushing pressures (take a quick dip down to a hydrothermal vent community).

Not having to eat or sleep would be great. Especially if I still can when I want to.

Being able to somehow store my bicycle in my pocket is another one I'd like.

I thought a while ago about the ability to generate electrical currents and pulses from my body. I guess that's too super for this thread though. Maybe being able to feel them without harm? Sniff out wifi?

One I've always wanted is the ability to project mental images or sounds in front of me, like a hologram (or speakers).

Also, my ability to communicate with animals borders on semi-super, I suppose. I can practically speak to them.

-The ability to absorb information quicker, combined with photographic memory - get out of jail uni free card
-The ability to see more of the EM spectrum - the highlights of this one would likely amount to night-vision, seeing wifi hotspots and x-ray vision
-Conscious control over my autonomic nerve system, but preferably with the ability to set it or parts of it back on "auto" - stress, nausea and headache are a thing of the past (once you have the proper medical knowledge)

I've seen that before. It's very entertaining, but I actually have the finding things in kitchens superpower. My dad can parallel park anywhere.

I suppose the super-ish power I would like most would be the ability to fall asleep and wake up on command, although I suppose there are real people who can do that. It just takes me at least half an hour to fall asleep and I tend to yell at people for waking me up before 14 hours of sleep. I then feel terrible when I'm actually awake, of course.

Why, enhanced and extra senses, of course. Many animals have at least one sense far more developed than the human equivalent, so it's nothing extremely super, but still awesome. To be more precise, it would include:
  • Vision ranging from middle UV (300nm) to reasonably far into the IR (~1000nm); pentachromatic; larger focus range
  • Hearing range from about 20Hz to some 60KHz
  • Hyperosmia; truly smelling pheromones
  • Much less granularity in sense of touch (ability to feel very fine textures); higher precision (ability to feel even extremely soft materials without applying much pressure)
  • Ability to identify substances by taste
  • Ability to feel the pH of substances, even in near-neutral range
  • Ability to feel magnetic and static fields

Note that the lower and upper ranges for all of this really aren't that exceptional in nature; only the breadth of the spectra and combination of broad-spectrum senses is super-ish.

I'd like to have the ability to know what a person's name is just by looking at their face. Or when someone talks about a person, i'd like to be able to see their face clearly.

I'd also like to be able to find my way around places without the need of a map. I'd like to know where everything is located, without having actually been there to know. Likewise, I'd like to be able to know if there is a traffic jam or accident up ahead, so I can take an alternate before it's too late.

One semi-super power I already have is I have a built-in radar detector. Most of the time I can tell if a police car or motorcycle is hiding somewhere, waiting to pull over a speeder. This is very helpful while driving down the interstate, and in known speed traps.

Me and my dad (and others in the family to a lesser extent, extending to those who spend a lot of time with the family) have eerily good timing with some things (essentially, set a timer for however long, then check it seconds before it goes off).
It's not even a case of only remembering the times when it happens, it's a statistically significant phenomenon.

Also we both have a very good sense of direction, so although we don't know where specific things are, we can get from one place to another we think is there approximating the most efficient path quite well*.
I love wandering around cities I've never been to before. People can't tell that I'm new there, it's awesome. (I get asked for directions quite a bit, despite scary clothes and facial hair. Maybe I look confident or something?)

I also have a knack with getting along with animals, even some non-tame ones. Not communicating per se though, although with trained animals I tend to be able to get across that I want them to do some thing they've been taught to do (telling them where to go is my speciality, although they don't always want to do it at first :P)

Anyway, to stop sounding like I have too much of a harry potter complex: I'd love to have the extended senses people have mentioned, and a photographic memory would be great.
Actually, the thing I want most of all, that I somehow forgot at first (I haven't been reminded too often lately, which is awesome) is the ability to know what people are thinking.
Not read minds or hear thoughts as such, but just know what they are/were thinking. They refuse to tell me, you see, which is really annoying.

I think the ability to socialise should be classified as a minor superpower, as well, and I want it.

*Sometimes there's a wall in the way though, which is really annoying, especially if you can see past the wall somehow to where you're wanting to go :P

THIS. Because I'm extremely "unique-looking", people remember my name very well, even after just a few meetings, while I generally have a hard time with names. I often get out of it by just faking recognition and avoiding using names in conversation, but it would be nice to actually recall names.

I would like this as well, but for our monthly meetings at work, and anything else anyone ever says to me. Not only would I like to recall it perfectly, but be able to remember the exact circumstances (time, date, etc.) that the conversation took place. I'd piss everyone off who promised me they'd buy me lunch for helping them out in some way, hoping that I'd forget it over time. Some of them would want to take me with them when they meet with property owners, so that if a property owner were to say they didn't say something, I'd be able to go and say they really did, and give a detailed description of what happened that day. In short, I'd be a human TiVO.
