that varies 100% by state. in dc where i am they updated it to allow you to put an x on your id, and required no proof for doing so; at the same time that that came to pass you also require no proof for changing your id to m or f. you have to fill out the gender designation form but no longer have to submit a doctor/therapist note or whatever. it's the same for whether you are changing your id to say m, f, or x.

(i would rather all ids just did away with gender marker altogether, but this is definitely a huge improvement over the previous requirements of being both binary options only and mandatory gatekeeping from some kind of authority figure!)

I would also guess a lot of the government departments are disjointed and don't necessarily pass that information back and forth. Like I wouldn't be surprised if the DMV would say you're sex W and the state taxing agency would say you're sex Z.

WOOT!
A man who is 'ill-adjusted' to the world is always on the verge of finding himself. One who is adjusted to the world never finds himself, but gets to be a cabinet minister.

Pfhorrest wrote:Today I had to actually go down in person to the DMV to renew my driver's license and while filling out basic info unsupervised on a computer, saw that the "Sex" option now has "Male", "Female", and "Nonbinary".

I was tempted to put "Nonbinary" but (A) that's not a sex, that's a (category of) genders, so I'm not sure what the question really wants, and (B) I'm not sure what the legal ramifications of doing so are, so I just chickened out and left the "M" that I've always had and never thought about.

(Relatedly: can someone transitioning MTF or FTM just renew their driver's license and pick a different box on the computer and that's all it takes to legally change sex now? I'd have thought there was more to the process).

It also had a multiple-choice thing for hair color, and I like to think of my hair as auburn, even though it doesn't have as much red in it as I'd like, but my existing driver's license has always said "brown", and once again the potential legal ramifications of picking the wrong thing made me scared (will someone IDing me say my hair isn't red enough to qualify as "auburn" and reject my ID?) so I just chickened out and left it "brown".

Then again, my existing license has had an inaccurate weight on it for close to two decades, and it's not like they make me step on a scale to confirm the weight I entered this time was accurate, or measured my height, or anything like that, so what the heck is the point of all this unconfirmed identifying information anyway?

There is weight information on your IDs

Depends on the State. KY does not. Some States do.

Some nice news: Police Commissioner Apologizes for Officers’ Actions in Stonewall Rebellion

It's NYTimes and thus paywalled, so here's the text:

James C. McKinley Jr. and Derek Norman wrote:New York’s police commissioner, James P. O’Neill, apologized on Thursday on behalf of the Police Department for officers’ actions during the Stonewall riot, a seminal 1969 clash outside a Greenwich Village club that is widely regarded as a turning point for the modern gay rights movement.

“I think it would be irresponsible to go through World Pride month and not to speak of the events at the Stonewall Inn in June of 1969,” Mr. O’Neill said.

“What happened should not have happened. The actions taken by the N.Y.P.D. were wrong, plain and simple,” he added.

“The actions and the laws were discriminatory and oppressive, and for that, I apologize.”

The auditorium applauded.

“I vow to the L.G.B.T.Q. community that this would never happen in the N.Y.P.D. in 2019,” he said. “We have, and we do, embrace all New Yorkers.”

The commissioner made his comments at Police Headquarters during a safety briefing related to Pride Month, the annual celebration of L.G.B.T.Q. culture.

I don't know that his vow really means all that much, but the public apology is a positive thing.

In personal ID-related news, I'm finally getting my ass in gear and getting my passport updated with the correct name and gender marker, which I'd been putting off due to a weird amount of anxiety about it. I got my new driver's license* a year ago this month after my legal name change, which was relatively painless because I'm in a position to be able to get official documents (just needed to bring the change of name order from the probate court and a letter about my gender from a therapist or doctor to the DMV), but since then I've been stuck in the country. Unfortunately, despite the fact that I still hold an unexpired passport, I have to make an appointment and go through the in-person application process rather than being able to renew/update by mail. After that, though, I think all the state and federal government departments that are relevant to me will have my proper name and gender, and I'll be able to travel/escape again.

That said, both my state and federal tax return checks came made out to my deadname, even though I filed under my new name. Shrug. I called in to the state and they fixed it in their system (after noting that it should already have changed because they did have my info, and they weren't sure why it hadn't), haven't gotten around to the federal one yet. My bank still lets me cash checks that are accidentally made out to the old name, so it's not a pressing problem.
