What sport would you like to see in the Olympics?

Postby existential_elevator » Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:45 am UTC

...well?

I certainly know I've been following a lot of it, and there are a few sports that I have no idea what they are, or quite why they should be olympic sports. There must be other sports that would make equally good Olympic games! So what would you add, and why?

Fuck, I was going to put down a load of jokes, then wrote free running first and realised it'd be a really damn good idea. Timed obstacle course with points for style? God, I'd love to see that in the Olympics!

Otherwise:

Beer drinking. First one to be sick loses.
Endurance headstands. First one to pass out loses.
Gloucestershire cheese rolling. Roll a Double Gloucester down a hill. Person that catches it wins.
Speed hacking. First one to disable The Great Firewall Of China wins.

Edit 2: Fencing, with illuminated foils, and suitable vwommmm sounds.

Edit 3: Hurdles. On Fire.

Edit 4: Chessboxing.

Hmmm. I think that instead of thinking of new sports we should be finding interesting combinations... Gymnastic shot put anyone? Flip, flip twirl, HEAVE.

100m synchronized diving? Would be like a really long diving board... sprint sprint spring.

There has to be a Maze event. It would test competitors’ speed, skill and cunning, and would be an ideal metaphor for the intricacies of modern diplomatic relations. And it'd be amazing.

I am SO behind free running. That would maybe be the most awesome thing to happen. I mean, can you imagine? Wow.

A maze would also be awesome.

Personly, I would be 210% behind some variation of Futurama-eque deathball being included.

Free Running should be included, I just think it would be difficult to actually broadcast it... since the course would have to be far more open than other ones, you'd have to have a bunch of cameras everywhere. Also, you have to have the right city for it as well...

On a more serious note, I'd like to see MMA included in the olympics. The sport has gained a lot of legitimacy over the past decade, and has evolved from little more than a glorified bar brawl into a technical sport that rewards skill just as much as other Olympic combat sports like Judo, Boxing, and Wrestling.

First, I honestly have a reservation about some of the major team sports being in the Olympics--particularly ones that already have some major international venues. I mean, soccer already has the World Cup. Baseball has the "World Series" (and only six or so countries active in baseball anyway). Field Hockey has its World Cup. But, for now I'll set aside that reservation.

The main sport I'd like to see implemented is cricket. The Twenty20 format of the game (matches take about 3 hours or less) is really suited to the Olympic format, and considering the wide international audience it's really likely to draw crowds. Especially if you can work in a few India-Pakistan, England-South Africa, and Australia-New Zealand matches. Oh, and it'd give a better shot for some of the South Asian countries to get a gold, for once.

Adam Gilchrist (Australia) has been talking about having it implemented by the 2020 games. He has a decent amount of support for the idea:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/cricket/7540588.stm

Also, cricket was an Olympic sport back in the 1908 games. Back then there was only the longer Test format, so I can see why it was never brought back.

The most realistic one from that list I see happening is speed skiing. Those helmets look great, too.

I would like to see freerunning as well.

I'd also like to see paintball or something similar. I suppose that's not really a sport though.

/me remembers that old show G Gundam involving countries fighting each other with giant robots in an Olympics style setting in order to rule the world. I wouldn't mind seeing that either.

Speed skiing (see the cracked article above) would be epic. Also, random hurdles. Right now the hurdles are evenly spaced. I think that before each race, they should be put at random intervals to really test the runners. Something like 7m, 13m, 5m, 20m, etc. instead of 10m, 10m, 10m or whatever it is now.

Adding catchers to all the field sports would probably be an improvement, especially shot put and javelin.
n+1'd for parkour and ultimate.
Here at Illinois we have underwater hockey: a 3-pound puck sits on the bottom of the pool; teams are equipped with short sticks, and must use smart breathing strategy (among other things) to get it to the, um, enemy's gate.

TheLong Walk.

(Maybe without the guns.)

But seriously, hear me out... THAT'S a f***ing marathon. Just map out a nice 5 mile route, and let 'em go. They can have all the water they want, but no food... just what they got in their tummies when they set out. Let 'em walk. They can quit whenever they want, EMTs will be on hand for ANYONE who passes out (which means they lose) and whoever's left... well, that's a friggin' marathoner right there. (Minimum speed will be maintained).

Rollerblade racing- Downhill.
It's like ski racing/bobsled, only minus all that silly soft snow. Even better is if the course includes a few loops.

I also woulds like to see artistic skydiving. Watching the platform divers go is amazing enough- now imagine what they could do given a few kilometers of empty space and a aerodynamically controllable suit.

I was just about to suggest this! I was just having a conversation with my friend about how awesome a 'go as long as you can' event would be. I wonder how long you could walk for if you trained to an Olympic standard. A week? 2?
They could a have a 'long run' too, where they aren't allowed to drop below 8mph or something.

Bungee fencing. Each fencer is attached to their end of the piste by a bungee cord so they have to fight against that as well their opponent. It could make for some fairly interesting escapes.
