I think I'm becoming addicted to making xkcd slighly worse.

From now on my file naming convention will be:

<TITLE><BASE+COMICS>+[<BORROWED+STUFF>]+(<REFERENCED+COMICS>)

Base comics are the ones I take whole panels and stuff from

Borrowed stuff are the ones I take a single line of text or an image from

Referenced comics are the ones I reference but don't take any material from

If I make more than one sw comic based on the same sources, I'll indicate that with v2, v3, v4 etc at the end

For example the top one in my previous post would be types1537+[889+1185]+(414+149+221).png

It makes us readers happy if you link the comic numbers to the appropriate comic :)

As a new user, whenever I post links it gets caught by the spam filter. Test. If this works I'll edit my previous posts to include links.

Yup, and now that I have >5 posts I'll edit when I get to my PC, am on mobile now.

Edit: done that. Now to work on my inspirations I've had throughout the day.

Edit2: And here they are! First, just want to fix a bug in one of my previous comics:
effective_sorts1185.png
Alt: HeapSort places all of the data into a heap aka priority tree, and pops the largest/smallest elements off one at a time which is a fast operation for this data structure.

And with that comic in mind:

479 + text from 351:

And these next ones are so obvious that someone has probably done them before, but reading through 204 pages takes a long time and I'm only on page 58, and not everything is yet archived to xkcdsw.com.

Alt: She should diet and exercise.

And, finally, last one, based on the most recent comic, 1538 plus text from 351:
lyrics1538+[351].png
Alt: It's actually a great talent. people think they're trolling me, but I just get to listen to one of my favourite songs.

I had some more ideas today but forgot them.

Dammit, more bugs. So I'm missing a bracket in bubblesort, and should be iterating from 0 to length(list)-1 instead of 1 to length(list) in insertsort, what's the third? Not defining the function Merge? I might have done that if it weren't for lack of space, and you get the jist of the algorithm anyway. I might fix them at some point, but I fear this would happen: (1319, alt text from 528)

sorting_slightly_worse1319.png
Alt: Well, at least it's better than vista.

(note to the future: If you're the guy who archives comics on xkcdsw.com, is it possible to link to my buggy "effective sorts" comic from the page of this comic? And then if I fix the bugs later, also link to that?)

Bubble fails on [2, 1], Quick overflows the stack on [1, 1], and your proposed fix for Insert is still broken and always returns [].

Ok, think it's fixed now. The code works in python, but I may have introduced a mistranslation when converting it beck to the python-like pseudocode of the comic. (note that the for __ = __ to __: construct is inclusive, unlike python's range. And "pass" is reserved in python)

1185:
effective_sorts1185v1.png
Alt: HeapSort places all of the data into a heap aka priority tree, and pops the largest/smallest elements off one at a time which is a fast operation for this data structure.

(And, if you're the guy that adds these to xkcdsw.com, only include this version and one buggy version, to provide context for my previous comic, please.)

I have a bunch more comics I made in the meantime too. I'll put them in a separate post later.

The best time for this is when they're old enough to question things a little, but not old enough to instantly disbelieve what you say. When they demand proof, bring up the traditional explanation and point out how that should lead to it being purple. The sky is not purple, thus Rayleigh Scattering is wrong, thus it is indeed Ba'al.
