In my continuing quest to cram as many xkcd references into a single SW as possible, I present the xkcd Comic Bracket (using the bracket structure from 1529 with a few minor modifications):

Image

I've included 109/1529 (≈1/14) comics in the bracket, based on several measures of which are most noteworthy (hopefully I haven't left out too many crowd favorites). What-ifs were not eligible. The lower right quadrant mostly consists of comics featured in the Store and the left half mostly consists of ones whose Forum threads are at least ten pages long. Comics are grouped roughly by similarity, in hopes of having relatively few apples-to-oranges comparisons while you're filling out the bracket to determine your favorite.

If anybody fills it out, especially anybody not infected with the "1190: Time is the OTC" disease, I'd be interested to know your results. I'd also be interested to know what your favorite comics are out of the ones I omitted from the bracket.

(My winner was 1110: Click and Drag. The runner-up was 1127: Congress. The other semifinalists were 258: Conspiracy Theories and 1338: Land Mammals. The other quarterfinalists were 695: Spirit, 1431: Marriage, 154: Beliefs, and 627: Tech Support Cheat Sheet. As for comics that were omitted entirely, I've of course included all of my own favorites--even ones like 224: Lisp and 730: Circuit Diagram that didn't technically meet my notability standards--but I am sorry not to have had room for 1000: 1000 Comics, 1227: The Pace of Modern Life, and some feel-good comics like 162: Angular Momentum, 150: Grown-Ups, and 1305: Undocumented Feature.)

I was given this ranking to post (that's my story and I'm sticking to it).

(The bracket is great, though. Over time I'll have to try to visit those and rank them myself...but I suspect some of the same finalists will come up.)

Coyne: at first I was thinking "Gosh, this person has made the opposite judgment from the one I would have, at almost every step." Then I noticed the pattern... :?

But yes, do visit the comics and rank them. I think I've set up some interesting juxtapositions.

Okay, okay, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to derail the thread by mentioning that other one.

Here's a quick mashup of 1135 and 1530 to get us back on track:

Oh, yes, the pattern was the thing. It was intended as a kind of a hidden joke for those who are trying to figure out how I could...well, so they could have an, "Oh, wait, this is the idiotic biggest number ranking!" Thank you, by the way, for sort of randomizing the bracket rather than just dumping them in order; that made the ranking much less obvious.

I haven't read the comic, but having done a bit of googling, it would appear that

Spoiler:
Sythe (the brown one) is a "Keidran" (a race of canine- and feline-based animals), whereas Raine (the white one) is actually a human who's been cursed to appear as a Keidran.

Always make sure the prisoner is properly restrained before arguing semantics.

The reason he escaped at the end was I couldn't think of a way to preserve the punchline but have Bond still go "You expect...?" I could have just ended with the long argument, but eh.
