Are you implying I shouldn't feel empathy for someone because they're of a different species? that's kinda messed up.

No, and it depends. AI ethics are... complicated.

But we're talking about a sapient race here... and they're very big on intelligence, considering the whole "preserving knowledge" thing. (Note: I only read the first book) It's wrong to hurt humans because we're capable of high-level thought; not because humans are inherently "good".

Still sapient and sentient. If we can feel empathy for fuzzy little animals that don't even have language, why not for a modified descendant of humanity?

Kitty, I love you, but you are a jackass and need to stop clawing my face at three in the morning when you think I should be letting you under the covers. Then again when you think you should be getting petted at six and are sitting on my chest.

I follow all the steps! He is just insane and greedy.

He gets upset if I use one hand instead of two to pet him while I page down.

Which is like five seconds. Greedy kitty.

He's fifteen though so I guess I can just blame it on his natural grumpiness.

Cannot multi-task while petting your feline. Requires full and undivided attention. Is like conversing with someone. Would you speak with someone reading a book and expect a meaningful conversation? Would not.

Page down with your foot, also. Or your nose. Why do you think humans have these things? Reserve your hands for petting and for hand-feeding him kitty treats. Do you not desire your cat’s conditional love?

Grah. When my parents split up in January 2010 and my mother moved halfway across the country, I was forced to pick up the internet bill because my father had neither the cash nor any use for the Internets. That February, I called and had the account transferred to my name.

This past May, I finally moved out of that house*, and now my dad's selling the house and moving out this month.

Today, I just found out that I actually signed a new two-year contract in 2010, and will be hit with a hefty termination fee if I cancel this service, which they actually stopped providing the minute I stopped paying in June. And I still owe for June and July. Awesome.

*Four years after graduating college. My parents were actually fine with my living there rent-free, and my dad couldn't even understand why I'd want to move out. But that's a completely unrelated story.

Bah, I never know what to say when getting my hair cut. I'm fine in most social interactions, but when people are doing something for me, I don't want to interrupt them. With most services its fine, because they last all of a few minutes, but a haircut can last up to half an hour, half an hour of awkward small talk while someone is using sharp things around my head.

Dear online news sites, video-boards, gaming sights and everywhere else which uses video:

Please, please, please stop trying to reinvent your own video player. If you really must use a flash-based player with self-hosted videos, pick one of the commonly available, or open source ones. Better yet, embed it as a youtube or vimeo video. Or, better yet, use HTML5's <video> element and let my damn browser choose how to render it - or save it, if I feel that's what I need to do to watch it.

/frustrated on trying to watch a BBC video. What do you mean, clicking on a past point on the bar to rewind the tape causes "problems with the content"?

Could you transfer the service to where ever you move to? Thus not voiding the contract and getting charged the fee.

Top tip for VirginMedia - if you want technical support, call and press the buttons as if you want to stop using their services.
When you get there, tell them you pressed the wrong number. They put you through to the UK call centre, not the abroad one.

Oh, and if you can, whenever they connect you, ask for a number you can call in case your call is dropped. That will often bypass layers of phone-tape.

When my internet dropped out, I really struggled to call them.

I don't have a home phone, I only have the line because I need the internet connection. So no calling 150 from the landline, for free.
So I have to call their premium number from my mobile.
As I don't have a home phone, I therefore don't know my home phone number. I couldn't give them my account number because they don't send me paper bills, so all that info is on my email account, which I can't access because my INTERNET IS DOWN. Ended up giving her my postcode and she didn't sound like she trusted me...

edit: but I'mma save that local number, thanks

You can have fallbacks as usual. Firefox does allow it for the codecs it supports.

I've seen sites wiggle out of that saying they don't want their videos hosted off youtube for a variety of reasons. I personally don't do so to avoid the branding and because my server has better connectivity to my intended audience. But yes, unless a site has very specific circumstances, youtube embedding is the way to go.

I moved three months ago and already have a different service provider. The only reason we used that one was because my former location was so rural they were the only people providing anything better than dialup.

Honestly, I wasn't even aware I signed up for a two-year contract until yesterday. I thought I was just transferring ownership of the current contract from my mother to myself. (I might have been informed of this at the time, but that was a year and a half ago and I have a terrible memory.)

Just call them and tell them that you did not, in fact, sign a contract, and instead just switched ownership of the account -- and that if they wish to charge you a termination fee, they will need to provide either paperwork with your signature or search through the recording of your original phone conversation for the part where you supposedly agreed to this contract and then provide that to you. If it's been a year and a half, they've probably erased that recording.

That way, the only way you'll have to pay the termination fee is if you really did agree. . .and you kinda should pay the fee if you did agree.

Though, it sounds like you're in England, so maybe the "you'll have to goddamn prove it" approach doesn't work over there. As an American, I've taken my cues from Insurance companies and politicians: deny EVERYTHING and blame anyone but myself -- but do it with a modicum of tact.

Goddamn fucking piece of shit contractors. Instead of using an actual clean out fitting on the bathtub drain they just used a t-fitting and mounted the access cap on the bottom of the T. Because of that, if you need to use the clean out any water left in the pipe will come pouring out when you remove the cap. And the way the drain pipe is configured there's always water in it (and not just in the p-trap). Also, because they used a t-fitting instead of a clean out fitting they couldn't cap it with any kind of regular sized cap, since it's a fitting, not a pipe. They used some sort of weird adjustable test plug. Now that that plug has rotted and started leaking it's im-fucking-possible to replace it easily. Nobody seems to sell these adjustable test plugs, and, as I said, normal caps and test plugs won't work because it's a fucking fitting instead of a pipe. The only way to fix it is to buy a small length of cast iron pipe, attach it to the fitting, and then attach a cap or test plug to the pipe. And, of course, cast iron pipes that large aren't available at home depot or lowes, we have to find a specialty plumbing store. And after going through all that and getting dirty and sweaty and smelly trying to fix it and figure out what the hell we had, we can't shower because the drain is unplugged. Fucking shit fuck asshole fuck shitter bitch fucker dicks.

Nope, I'm an American. (Shouldn't my location have given that away? :-P) And they did send me the contract I signed, so I'm not arguing over whether I'm supposed to pay it. Just ranting at my own stupidity for allowing myself to rack up an extra two months of service that no one used before doing so.

...of course, after the car accident I found myself in last night, I've somehow got bigger worries. Nobody was hurt, but the front end of my car is seriously crunched up. Hope it doesn't end up totaled...

Apparently a club in which I act as secretary has been suspended. Since freaking April. And I had no idea. Why, why did I not know this? I'm having a real hard time deciding exactly how much blame to place on myself. At the very least, I'm probably not doing enough to resolve this group's huge communication problem. At worst, it's ALL my fault (for I suspect that we were suspended because we forgot to send in the required yearly update and/or update of newly elected officers...but I'm not sure if either of those were my responsibility yet). I feel quite incompetent, and determined not to do this again. Or something...maybe this was out of my control? I really can't tell. Is that bad? That's bad, isn't it? Ugh. Why do I fail so hard!? Why does this club fail so hard?

EDIT: Yeah, it's looking more and more like this is my fault...I really hate myself for being so clueless throughout this whole thing. The next time I receive some sort of position of responsibility like this, I sure as hell will not assume that I'll be told what it is I'm actually supposed to be fucking doing. Lesson learned: when you gain some sort of responsibility, part of your responsibility is finding out EVERYTHING you're supposed to be doing. On your own. Oh, and in case you're wondering why I'm making such a big deal about this...I'm going to be secretary of another club next semester. Only this second club is much bigger, much more active, and much more important to its members, so if I screw up like this again, I may end up disappointing a lot of people! Oh, and I hate realizing that I've been monumentally incompetent. Then again, maybe it's good that I'm realizing this now, instead of when school starts.

Re: Rant Thread (because we need more ranting)

My mom feels that because she teaches in an inner city high school means she knows everything there is to know about poor people in America ever. And goes around saying shit like "the richest family in Taiwan has nothing on the poor people in America" or "it's their fault they spend all their cash on junk food, that's why they're fat" and "I'll never donate to poor people in America because they don't need it."

And I can't point out any counter-examples or give her any, you know, facts, because I, of course, do not teach in an inner city high school and therefore have no experience or credibility whatsoever.

That's awfully close to the old 'I am a teacher and that's why I know everything' syndrome a few of my high school teachers had. I guess if that wasn't in the distant past it would warrant a rant, too.

It translates to basically everything she says. She lives in a big city, therefore she knows everything there is to know about rush hour traffic jams, whereas I, who also used to live and drive in a big city and currently visit two big cities frequently - often during rush hour - know nothing whatsoever about rush hour traffic because I happen to live in a smaller town right now. Of course, once I point this stuff out, she falls back on the "I'm 50 and you're 23, you know nothing" defense, and then changes the subject to attack something about my character or accomplishments.

I'm having a ball during this family vacation, let me tell you.

But, though family relations may suck, you have topped the 500th page of the rant thread. Surely that's some compensation?
