I don't know yet. I guess the 'fess is that I feel a bit guilty about it, since I'm not sure if I didn't overdo it a little for the audience. That sort of thing works better when someone already agrees, so I'm not sure whether the Modly Powers might think it's a little much when I'm taking down someone else.

Callous bigotry just gets me snarky, I guess.

Whenever I have time off work (regular, not sick leave or public holidays) I always seem to dwell on how much work I will have waiting for me when I come back, rather than actually enjoying the break. It's got to the point where I will seldom take more than two days off work at a time.

Chai, how do you mean? In a professional and/or organized group sense? Is it even possible to quit music entirely? It's hard to imagine removing it completely from a person's life.

I've been in and out of my college music program for a while, and I've been inconsistently unhappy with it. I must be doing something wrong, because apart from take-all-comers-put-you-in-the-chorus parts in operas, I have never been cast in anything. Literally. Not even a middle school play. And I've been doing opera for 5 years, singing for 10 more, and I've done decent work as an occasional concert soloist and choral musician, but it's really frustrating to not be doing the thing that I got into opera for: singing drama. I mean, I may have gotten into a top 5 conservatory, but that was with a few strings pulled and I didn't get into any other music school (a couple of other non-music-focused colleges, but I think they were more impressed by my research experience than my voice).

I asked whether I could cover a role today. Just understudy it. Not even perform. And, as I mentioned in my rant, I know the entire fucking Nozze di Figaro. The coach looked at me like I was shit on his shoe. He was reasonably polite, but it was crystal clear that I was not worth six seconds of his time.

I know I'm not the greatest singer in the world, but I'm not this bad. And I don't know what the fuck I'm doing wrong, and I don't know that I can fix it if I never have get any performance experience. I feel like I've wasted 2 years of my education, I'm about to waste another one, and I just don't know whether I should continue because of some sunk-cost fallacy.

Thanks for the hugs, guys. I'm upset as all fuck. I love singing, so it's fucking frustrating that, when I'm supposed to be doing it all the time, I never get to outside of choir.

Aw, Chai, I really hope you get somewhere with it. I know how terrible it is to be passed over time and time again for parts you know you are more capable of than the person cast, and it sucks. Are you going to be stuck with the same director/company for your next year, or are there other options?
I wish you the best of luck with it, I really do.

Confession 1: Finding a job as a music teacher is nigh-impossible.

Confession 2: I hate how the one thing I want to do most (see confession 1) is pretty much shit on by the public and school boards. When push comes to shove, athletics always wins.

Confession 3: I literally get paid to do nothing at my current job (in the technology field).

Confession 4: This current job is the EXACT reason why I wanted to teach in the first place. Sitting in a cubicle in front of a computer all day is not what I'm meant to do, right?

Sax, can you possibly get referrals to start teaching music privately? Private lessons pay better than school teaching, even though there aren't as many benefits or job security, and you have a lot more time available if you want to do performance as well.

I'm trying. Unfortunately I can't just go into the local schools and say "hey send me your sax players" because the teachers all seem to be woodwind players happily raking in the private lesson moolah. So i'm looking into alternative methods of advertising. My heart is definitely in the classroom, though. I'm way too energetic for confined spaces.
