Yes to above plan. Go to salon, tell them your school rules, tell them you don't want to spend more than five minutes on daily maintenance, and ask for a few suggestions. Don't tell them ten minutes; they may stretch it to fifteen or give you something that would take a stylist ten minutes but takes you longer.

It always helps to look through the books of example haircuts in the waiting area, even if you can only show them a couple cuts you really don't like.

If you want the cheap solution, do what I do: get a beard trimmer. Every couple of months, I cut my hair back to a quarter-inch or so. Other than that and showering, it's basically zero-maintenance.

I have been considering the pros and cons of shaved head, sideburns and a goatee...I've yet to come to a proper decision.

EpicItalic fail :D

I am reading this thread with great interest, since I've long wanted to do something with my hair.
Coincidentally, my natural hair is a lot like yours (BtB), so this couldn't be better.

I think I'll go with the idea of going to a salon, and basically asking them to un-dorkify me.
Money is an issue for me though, Imposible to have job and still maintain school and homework when I have four hours of transport every day, and on top of that live on the countryside where busses are limited to once per hour, and on top of THAT live in a country where you have to be 18 to drive a friggin' car.
I don't twist the truth, I just make it complex.

Hey, that's (kinda) what my hair looks like! It's great, takes like 10 seconds in the morning and no need for gel or anything.

Would it be odd to walk in and ask for an idea as to what they could do or should I wait until my next cut?

Depends where you go, but I would say "Hell yeah, do it."

Just go in. Though if they stand there looking quizzical for a few minutes, or they send someone to the local abattoir to look for ideas, I'd wait a bit. But you should be fine.
Anything I said pre-2014 that you want to quote me on, just run it past me to check I still agree with myself.

You should cash in on the scenefag trend. Like Shizo!

ding!

Use product or don't, it looks the same either way. Just run your hands through the mess and you're good to go. Most of all, you'll look like Shizo. :D

The use of color was Shizo's idea to improve the ding, not a mod's.

Most of the guys at my high school [and I mean MOST- 6 out of 10. No joke] have their hair at the bottom of their ear or down to their shoulders, and it's usually either wicked curly or completely straight. I find this style very attractive and it looks good on any guy.
Life is beautiful.

Get a beard, everything works with Beards.

Note that if you also grow out your hair, you will either look like Jesus or a Junkie.
On the plus side, it requires a minimum of Effort, as Growing out your hair and beard require only a lack of activity.

What about a girl? If I'm clean shaving and wearing the right clothes, I can pass as female...
