The Official NHL 2007-08 Season Topic of Excellence

Postby MFHodge » Wed Oct 03, 2007 4:52 pm UTC

I've got my tickets. I've got my parking pass.

The Carolina Hurricanes face off against the Montreal Canadians tonight at 7:00.

This is the first year that I've had a full season ticket. My dad and I each got one full ticket, and will split them evenly between (Me and Dad), (Me and my lady), and (Mom and Dad). I'll end up going to about 28 games.

Anybody else going to some games? Watching from home? Give a flying crap at all?

I'm a hardcore Rangers fan in the middle of Sabres country. I've got a Messier jersey hanging up on the wall, my roomie's got a Perreault sweater directly opposite. It's gonna be awesome to watch games with this dude. Bonus: He got us two tickets to a Rangers-Sabres game early next year for my Birthday.

Anyway, Rangers open up at 7pm against Flordia tomorrow night. I'll be wearing that Messier jersey all day.

Rangers could have a good year. The Sabres will have a tough time, but they have a great coach, so who knows. I'm pimping the 'Canes polo shirt for work, jersey is in the car.

But really, even though they got rid of Vokoun, the Preds are gonna own this year. They open against Colorado this weekend.

Spoiler:
Preds win.

Ever since the strike a couple years ago, I've pretty much lost all interest in pro hockey. Now I'm left wishing that they covered college hockey more around where I live. Especially since I graduated college, and now live too far away to go to all the college games.
I've never made anyone's life easier and you know it.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this one.

Who do the Predators have? They lost Kariya, Foppa (okay, he was only with them for 17 games, but he got 15 points, 13 of those assists, in those games.), Sullivan, Timonen, Hartnell. Oh yeah, and Vokoun. The guy that won over half of your games.

And who did they bring in? DeVries?

Face it, the Preds had a fire sale before they fly the coop.

Also, the Avalanche are going to win. Yes, I am an Avs fan. What's it to ya? ;)

EDIT: Oh, and I live in Calgary. That means I only have the opportunity to see an Avs game 4 times this season. I'm hoping to go to at least one though.

Philadelphia Flyers: largest single season turnaround in NHL history (I hope). Danny Briere between Simon Gagne and Mike Knuble = unstoppable.

In their infinite wisdom, the NHL started the Flyers out on a west coast road trip this year... whatever.

Would it be poor form to mention that I really enjoyed watching you guys in the playoffs the past couple years?

This season is going to be awesome. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that my Sharks are the best team in hockey right now. If they can show some of the heart and grit they've been lacking down the stretch recently, we should bring the cup up to the better half of California.

*sigh* I wish I didn't have to drive 100 miles each way to get to the tank.

GO FLAMES

LET THE GAMES BEGIN.

The Avalanche will be our biggest division rival this year. They will taste defeat.

Especially if they play at the Saddledome. Our records at home have been ridiculous the last couple years.
The drinking will continue until morale improves.

I am SO flying down to see Hodge sometime this season.

I'm a fan of Colorado, but I haven't really been watching much hockey the last few years (Bad Canadian, I know), but now that I'm at a house with cable and own a tv, I might just get a schedule.

You guys are playing my Avs on Jan. 12. I believe that's in between semesters for me (or just the beginning of one anyway). Besides, it's a weekend game.

I've gotta check me some plane ticket prices.

And by "in", do you mean you have tickets readily available to sell me? That would be sweet as well. :D

Not if Stastny keeps scoring against you like he did last night!

Well the 'Canes managed to blow what should have been an easy game last night. Too many penalties --> 3 PP goals against. Pens are in town Friday and I don't have high hopes for that one. :(

Cam Ward > M.A. Fleury

Canes' Defence >> Pittsburgh's Defence

You guys should do alright as long as you don't give the Pens' PP unit any ice time, and your offense can get in front of Fleury.

Rangers up by one after the first!

I don't get the game up here at college on TV, so I'm listening to the radio broadcast online. It's pretty satisfying, actually.

Wooo! Playoffs in less than a week!

Who's excited!?

Thankfully, the Avs made it this year, and I'm hoping we'll at least make it past the first round. I'm curious to see how far Theo can take us.

What are your predictions for this season?

Mine:

Stars vs. Canadiens - Canadiens take it in 6

So, I used to love hockey so hard. ESPN was my most watched channel, I could get away with that, but now that I watch none, I dunno. Hockey's a tough sport to follow casually, as it's rare to channel surf into a game (also I don't ever watch TV at home). I'm glad to see this brief burst of love here of all places.
How'd my Coyotes do? Anyone?

Edit: Yes, I'd rather ask here than look it up myself.

pretty bold prediction. the west is probably gonna destroy the east. i wonder whats stopping the red wings from completely dominating.

i missed the rangers game last night in which they clinched the POs. i watched the highlights and, not only did Jagr finally have a good game, he scored 2 goals (which he hasnt been doing), on the powerplay (which has been sucking), with one timer slapshots (which Jagr NEVER does EVER).

WHAT THE HELL? MY WORLD IS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN.

The Canadiens have been on fire lately. If Price or Halak can catch fire just in time for the playoffs, I think they'll be the team coming out of the East. I see the Stars coming out of the West, only because last season's performance by Turco. The only reason the Stars didn't take the series is because Dallas couldn't score, and all 3 of Dallas' wins were shutouts.

They'll be facing either Anaheim or Minnesota in the first round, and I see them taking both series because of Giguere's less-than-dazzling goaltending. Dallas is a very physical team, and I think they'll overpower both of them.

EDIT: Fixed a brain fart.

They actually got pretty close, and started making a drive for a spot after they got Bryzgalov, but they kind of started slipping when Vrbata and Mueller cooled off. They made a good run though, and I'm looking forward to seeing them next season with Turris and Hossa rearing to play.

Yeah, bad break for the Canes there.

I'm excited for the Wild-Avs game tonight. I've got my Sakic jersey on, and I may even find a place that's showing the game... which is a long-shot, since all the bars will have CBC on, showing the Flames game tonight. :(

Huet isn't with the Canadiens anymore. He is a Cap (my team), for now.

Anyways, playoffs: Hopes: Caps make it to at least the Eastern finals. Pens get creamed by Ottawa. San Jose mets the Wings in the Western finals, destroys them, and heads on to the Cup Finals. San Jose wins overall.

Sober Reality: Philly will be really physical, so even if the Caps do win the first round, I don't see us getting past the second round do to exhaustion. The Pens I think are the team to beat in the East and will go to the Stanly Cup. The West right now is hard to figure out, but I will wager that either the Wings or San Jose will be upset before the Western finals.

Arrgggh. Stupid sameness in names between Huet and Halak. Edited and fix'd.

Speaking of Huet, I must say I'm impressed with his performance, considering the defensively-starved team he has in front of him. If he can carry that into the playoffs, I see them handling the Pens if M.A. Fleury crashes and burns. That is, if the Pens don't play Conklin.

Disco_Inferno wrote:The West right now is hard to figure out, but I will wager that either the Wings or San Jose will be upset before the Western finals.

Agreed. I see my Avs as the dark-horse of this year's playoffs, despite the firepower they have up front. If Theodore can continue his stellar play, I think the Avs will have a good chance to get to the Conference finals.

EDIT:

Yeah, Ottawa won't have a chance against Pittsburgh. With Alfredsson as questionable for the series, and no real consistency in goaltending, I see the series ending in 5 games, with Pittsburgh on top.

"My God, man! Do they want tea?"
"No, I think they're after something more than that, sir. I don't know what it is, but they've brought a flag."

Go Habs go! The Canadiens can make it! Bring us a 25th Stanley Cup!

Montreal is up against Boston. Out of 8 games between both teams this season, Montreal won all 8. The first round should be a cakewalk.

I've been working on my playoff picks for the last few days, and so far all I've been able to do is poke holes in every team in the Eastern Conference without being able to make any picks, and I've only gotten to the conference semi-finals for the west.

For the Eastern Conference:

The Habs look to be the best at first glance to me, but considering large injuries they have to overcome (Koivu is out) and an inexperienced goaltender, things don't actually look so good for them. The Bruin's injury situation is even worse, and they've got a goaltender who, while experienced, has not played in the playoffs. This is the only series in the east that I can pick a clear winner for right now, that being the Habs.

A lot of people like the Penguins, but I see some inconstancy issues with them right now. In the last game of the season, the Pens were shut out by the Flyers. Even being a Flyers fan myself, I have to say that it should not have happened. Even with Crosby out of the lineup, Pittsburgh still has a good team, and they couldn't score a goal in a game that could have given them the #1 seed in the Conference. Ottawa, on the other hand has been in a free-fall since Christmas, but they've got a good amount of experience in the playoffs which could turn that around. I can't pick a clear winner here, I'm leaning toward the Penguins, but don't count the Senators out.

I'm not a big fan of the Southeast Division, because, with a few exceptions, you get a team that manages home ice advantage despite the fact that they barely qualify to be in the playoffs. Washington is the 3rd seed to the Flyers 6th, though the Caps finished with 94 points to the Flyers 95. I'm gona be a little biased here though, since the Flyers are my team. So you've got a team that squeaked its way from 9th to 3rd on the last day of the season because it's in a weak division, against a team that, while they're mounting one of the largest turnarounds in recent memory, still lacks any sort of consistency. The Flyers themselves just made it into the playoffs, after being in second place in the conference as recently as February. I'm obviously hoping the Flyers win this one, but to say that I've been disappointed before is a bit of an understatement.

Rangers and Devils. This will probably be the most exciting series to watch in the Eastern Conference. The Devils have probably the best goaltender in the NHL right now, but the home ice advantage that these two teams fought for probably isn't gona mean a whole lot in terms of providing the "sixth man" for the Devils, as their stadium provides easier access to Rangers fans than Devils fans. Taking a look at the regular season series, on one hand the Devils have had problems solving the Rangers, on the other hand, aren't the playoff the perfect time for that tendency to end? Once again, can't really pick a winner, but it doesn't really matter. This series will best be described as "Gladiatorial Combat," and whoever manages to crawl out of the ring won't have enough left in them for round two.

Western Conference:

Detroit and Nashville. Detroit looks good this season. Then again, Detroit looks good every season and they still manage to fall flat on their face come playoffs. There's nothing remarkable about Nashville, but unless Detroit can manage not to burn out in the playoffs again this season, Nashville is going to the second round.

San Jose and Calgary. Probably gona be the best series in the west to watch. Calgary has one of the best forwards, one of the best defensemen, and one of the best goaltenders in the league. San Jose also has a solid team, but their number one guy, Joe Thornton, is a liability in the playoffs. I think Calgary is gona take this one.

Minnesota and Colorado. I'm a big fan of Peter Foresberg, but let's be honest, you've got better odds winning at the Roulette table then you do of correctly guessing whether or not he's gona play in the next game. On top of that Joe Sakic hasn't been himself this season. Take into consideration the age of these two guys along with their best defensemen, and you've gota wonder if they've got the energy to get through the second season. The Wild also have a great offense and Jose Theodore just won't be enough to stop it.

Anaheim and Dallas. Your offense is certainly important, and Dallas has got some good weapons there, but defense wins championships. I've got some questions about the quality of Dallas' defense and Marty Turco can be outperformed by a minor league goaltender when he gets to the playoffs. The Ducks, on the other hand, have the best defensive corps in the league and a solid goaltender who helped them win the Stanley Cup last season. I'm going with the Ducks here and a short series, too.

tl;dr: For the first round, the only winner I know for sure in the east is the Habs. In the West: Nashville, Calgary, Minnesota, Anaheim.
