Keeping Your Nose Clean

Postby azule » Thu Jan 01, 2015 2:55 pm UTC

How do you?

There's the obvious tissues. Bathroom or facial? Avoid getting it stuffed up to begin with? Just wait until you sneeze? Head under bath water?

Common or unique techniques, anyone?

I've taken to having the proper article (tissues in a compact bag) when I'm out and about, but I tend to use toilet paper at home. I haven't seen compact toilet paper in any store. Even hubless is scarce.
- No, son. I said 'duck'.
- Duck duck duck duck! Duck duck duck duck!

During normal use I stick a handkerchief-cum-finger1 up my noseholes to remove those pesky pieces of solidified snot. The handkerchief is there chiefly to 1) not get my fingers dirty 2) prevent damaging nosehole tissue 3) have a place to dispose of the snot.
In other circumstances I haven't found a good way to deal with a leaky nose —just filling up handkerchief after handkerchief.

1 if you just read "cum" in a non-Latin way, you have been on the internet too much.

Oh yeah. I forgot handkerchiefs and clothing like sleeves, and hands or arms.

I don't use handkerchiefs, not even for cleaning glasses (they don't work). I mostly use tp.

I usually carry a cloth handkerchief. In times of great need (a cold for example) I have paper versions of it.

i like to blow under running water. that really cleans the nose out, but it tends to horrify persons of female persuasion.

Facial tissues. Lots and lots of facial tissues. And not the cheap kind, because you need lots and lots and lots and lots of those, and they chafe the nose-parts more.

Has anyone here ever used a Neti pot? I am currently sick with a cold and desperate to be able to breath. Amazon will deliver this weird contraption to me tomorrow...I hope it works.

That looks really uncomfortable.

you can just snort some salt water from a shallow bowl (if you *can* do it).

Aquarium pump (but also read the title): https://xkcd.com/1157/

But just responding to the topic title: if you stop putting in foreign compounds, you'd never have this problem to begin with!

Get some sudafed. The good stuff, not the "oh my people some people cook crystal with it let's put something useless in sudafed" variant. Works like a charm. If you can't buy sudafed where you live, you can make it yourself out of easily-sourced compounds.

I always keep Kleenex boxes in every room of the house, on the front and back seats of both cars, and on my desk at work. Travel packs in my bag. And yes, they have to be Kleenex.

Year-round allergy sufferer. And yes, I take 24-hour non-drowsy medicine (Allegra) every morning, and 8-hour drowsy medicine (Benadryl) every night. Sometimes supplemented by other non-drowsy medicines (Sudafed and Day-Quil) throughout the day, like now when the trees are in bloom. And Tylenol sinus. Sometimes Nyquil at night.
I hear velociraptor tastes like chicken.
