Mod Madness 2014 : The Announcement

Postby SecondTalon » Thu Mar 20, 2014 2:30 pm UTC

Capture.JPG

It's rolling on that time of year again.

So that means it's time for the yearly reminder - Mod Madness is coming.

If you've gone through it before, you know what to expect. You also know better than to complain about it, so feel free to take the week off when it starts. The moderation staff is more than happy to assist you on this.

If this is your first time going through it. Oh boy. Boy howdy. Things are gonna get weird. If you thought the Time Thread was incomprehensible now, just wait.

When will all this start? Hard to say - used to be before April Fool's Day, now it tends to coincide with it. This time? Eh.. when things stop making sense, you'll know it's started.

How long does it last? Used to be a couple of weeks, now it's down to one as frankly, one is about all anyone can take.

Are you a member of The Truly Free or FF00BF BFFs? Now would be a good time to back-up your avatars and signatures.

What's going to happen? The entire modstaff gets access to a bunch of the modtools, notably word filtering. And are then encouraged to create new filters. For example, one year someone changed Palestine to Israel, Palestinians to Israelis and so on. I partially made a choose-your-own-adventure game. Occasionally the forum gets absolutely broken, like I did intentionally once when I changed every single word on the forum to Hondor.

Lots of people make a game of trying to figure out what the filtered words actually are. They usually build quite extensive lists that only get 30-40% of the filters made.

Don't like it? Build a time-machine and stop Internetmeme from giving us the idea. Or... as I said earlier, just take the week off when things start to go weird.

Man, whatever it was. I read the books which means I freely insert and remove letters from characters names because they sound better to me, and usually completely ignore the given description for something that better matches what I think a Harry or Joffrey or Speaker-To-Animals should look like.

But I did take the two seconds needed to spell the name correctly when I actually did it for those wild and wacky 15 seconds.

Maybe it'll make the Time thread comprehebsible for outsiders. For us OTTers it is comprehensible as it is.
In fact, some of our lingo is left over from the 2013 madness. We still use needle pulled thingy for thread on occasion for example.
I look forward to it. Madness 2013 helped shape Time. Sometimes it was a puzzle to read posts but it usually was a fun puzzle.

Heh, I joined the turn your name Purple Pizzazz* club because I thought it was going to be fun, and it was. But, every year? Come on. At least don't be lazy this time around and change our avatars and signatures to something funny every day or something, last year it was kind of lazy.

roband wrote:the fuck is that?

Glad to be part of the group of people in the world with no problem whatsoever to understand OTTspeak (despite skipping hundreds of pages on the Tread instead of blitztreking them), though I've got to say that despite Earthling on Mars's transOTTion being awefulsome I expected it to be a chirped a lot more (unless... it was but I can no longer tell the difference between real words and made up ones.)

But yeah, mods! Pay attention! Step it up! If you don't have filters that change words into empty spoilers then you're not as powerful as you think you are!

*
Spoiler:
Again, This is pink, and this is Purple Pizzazz.

Usernames get changed to this color.

Now, compare them and tell me if it makes more sense to say "usernames turn pink" or "usernames turn purple pizzazz".

Because there's no other named color that is closer (believe me, I spent 15 minutes researching this.)

And, anyway, I doubt you can even tell the difference between FF00BF and Purple Pizzazz:

Image

Which one is which? Can you tell without your color picker?

Eh?

I just hope people don't keep calling it pink just to annoy me.

POST PREVIEW - oh well, it's clear the darker one is FF00BF... so never mind. MY point stands pink doesn't look anything like it. Why couldn't crayola name Purple Pizzazz as the color with 100% red and 75% blue? And why hasn't anyone named that color yet? *sigh*
Go! Go! You can do it username5243!
Cheers Marsh'n!

I hate to burst the Time Waiters' (or are you guys something else now there's nothing to wait for) bubble, but filters don't work in the OTT.

Who needs Randall? (striked out because if I said something like this on the OTT It'd be considered highly heretical and I would be pelted with stone pillows and skittles)

We have gotten an OTTer* to continue with Time and the ONGs for us in what is called TimeAfterTime, and he's so good at some point I thought I was reading content by Randall that I hadn't seen in a previous page. He has me on the edge of my seat and waiting has never been this fun :)

Just visit the last pages of the thread and see for yourself, I will not spoil who is this person who is continuing with the ONGs but it has been speculated that it's Randall himself

*(getting him/her to continue it sounds a bit off, as they are doing it on their own volition and because of their love for Time, and it shows)

Ah, hadn't realised that you've moved on from colourising all the old ones (which were cool and all, but I was never that fanatical about the OTC so didn't keep up with the thread.)

I was wondering what y'all were up to over there though.

Something wonderful.

Or awful.

I forget which.

Point being, much like a baking cake, I'm not going to pay attention to it until it's done. Constantly sticking my head in just makes the process slow down - I was there for when the eggs were cracked and the batter mixed, but I did decline licking the spoon. Still, whenever it's done, I'll try it out and see if I like it. If I don't...nothing of value was lost, as far as I'm concerned. Everyone involved gains experience, so the overall gain is a positive.

And if I do like it - hey, bonus.

...

Yes, the universe does in fact revolve around me. Doesn't yours?

Empty Spoilers are nothing compared to:

Haha! I made you click and now you'll have to read this thread from the start!

Specially as you can't really read their content without quoting the post. Even those annoy me!

Man, how I miss being current on the OTC, but I recall there were plenty of OTTers last year on this thread's version, and it worked like a Time Travel place where OTTers in the Past, Present and Future1 could interact together.

LET'S TAKE OVER THIS THREAD!2

1 - very cool.

2 *shot* not really, some people get annoyed by OTTers, for some reason...

The word filters worked on the OTT at one point, and I think they can (and should) again. Only the most intrepid of mod will escape unharmed, but entering that tenth circle of confusion to embrace the modness could be worth the risk. Or you might get obliterated. Hard to tell. Take some snacks with you.

Not on firefox :(

But anyway, the main thing is you never see them coming, so you end visiting some youtube video by force - at least empty spoilers don't have consequences like "haha! Did you have several spoilers opened on the previous page which now will be closed when you click back and you have to search the part that you were reading." >_<

Expecting these kinds of annoyances in the next Madness, last time it was just word filtering! Bring something that would really make me want to take a one week break off the forums, I challenge you!
