What is it you are wondering about? That the additive inverse of a negative number is a positive number, or that the product of two negative numbers is a positive number?

Don't underestimate the power of randomly adding words. Didn't Einstein once publish a book titled 'Relativity made clear for everyone' (or along those lines) which basically was the same as his scientific work just with an occasional 'dear reader' thrown in?

Sure, but the extra "dear reader"s were not what made his proofs proofs.

You know someone's fundamentalist to a delusional degree when they claim that Christians are the most persecuted people on the planet.
Even though it's the most popular religion in the world, and has been for a long long time.
Even though the Jews have been persecuted during the entire lifespan of Christianity, and four thousand years before that.
uhhhh fuck.

Well, it's not really a matter of proofs, but a matter of definitions... multiplication, as commonly used by mathematicians, is defined such that the product of two negative numbers is positive. The pattern thing is sorta the motivation for why it's defined that way.

But you're free to define your own multiplication-like operation that is similar to normal multiplication except that the product of two negative numbers is negative. There's nothing stopping you, and your operation is no more or less "right" than traditional multiplication. However, it will be significantly less useful than normal multiplication... for example, a(b+c) = ab+ac would no longer necessarily be true, and you wouldn't be able to divide by negative numbers (8/-4 would be impossible, -8/-4 could be either 2 or -2). But maybe you'd find a use that would be worth the loss of flexibility. Also, you shouldn't call your operation "multiplication" without qualifiers, because you'd probably confuse your readers who'd be expecting the normal multiplication.

ok, look at this.

Dr. Math wrote:
We can start with how -a is defined. It is "the additive inverse of a"
- that is, it is the number that, when added to a, gives 0:

a + -a = 0

Therefore -(-a) means the number that, when added to -a, gives 0. But
applying the commutative property of addition, the equation above
becomes

-a + a = 0

Therefore the number that, when added to -a, gives 0 is a; or,

-(-a) = a

A closely related, but different, question is how we can prove that

-1 * -1 = 1

The theorem linking these two is this:

-1 * a = -a

Let's prove this. Start with the fact that zero times any number is
zero:

0 * a = 0

Write 0 as (1 + -1), which follows from the definition of -1.

(1 + -1)*a = 0

Apply the distributive property:

1*a + -1*a = 0

Use the fact that 1 times any number is the same number:

a + -1*a = 0

Now, the number that, when added to a, gives 0 is -a. Therefore

-a = -1*a

Using this theorem, we can easily prove that -1 times -1 is 1:

-1 * -1 = -(-1)
= 1

Right... that's the point. The definition of multiplication happens to be such that this works. You can shuffle the definitions around so that different things are taken by definition and different things are properties (eg you can prove thing A by assuming thing B, or you can prove thing B by assuming thing A)... the only difference is semantics. Your Dr Math, whoever that is, is taking a(b+c)=ab+ac as an assumption and using that to prove that that the product of two negatives is positive... another person could use a definition of multiplication that includes that the product of two negatives is positive, and use that to prove a(b+c)=ab+ac. Neither of these is more right than the other... both end up with the same system of multiplication, which has both properties.
