2013 XKCD Store Images

Postby peewee_RotA » Fri Dec 13, 2013 8:00 pm UTC

They have been changing pretty frequently with some very funny options. How should that be handled. Does each get a thread? Am I not the first one to ask? Will Rocky and Bullwinkle escape certain doom?

I would appreciate it, especially since they don't show up on uni.xkcd.com...

We've been keeping track of them over in the OTT while we Wait for it. mscha has collected most of the banners. They appear in series. Right now the site is returning banners with "J#" in their filenames, or Series J.

The relevant conversation from the OTT:

mscha wrote:In a porn mode window (Chrome Incognito, Firefox Private, IE InPrivate, ...) you get a different banner every time you close and open the window. In a regular window, it's the same thing every time.
That suggest the banner shown is stored in a cookie, but I can't seem to find one that does this.
(...)
Ah, it gets the banner by loading Javascript from:

Code: Select all

"http://dynamic.xkcd.com/test?_=" + ('' + Math.random()).substr(2)

(example: http://dynamic.xkcd.com/test?_=966606603236869)
and there's a cookie “c” (with apparently encrypted content) on that request, so that's how it's done.

Note that the ID of the banner is passed as “utm_campaign” in the link to the store, so the GLR is checking which banner works best.
BlitzGirl wrote:I'm glad ED handled the punsawing, because I've been busy working with the banners. I took the ones posted here in the OTT (mscha found quite a lot) and on reddit, and made a visual list. The banners are labeled with the letters in their filenames. There are still some gaps. I'm missing C1, C4, C14-17, D1, D17, E5, G16-17. I don't know if there are any other letters seen yet, but it seems like A, B, and F at least should show up. Also, 17 is the highest seen in any number set, but there may be more.

I could be wrong, but I think we're now all getting “series g” banners (i.e. /store_gd_g0_... through /store_gd_g16_...). I saw “series e” first time I ran my script, and apparently there's been c and d too.
At some point, the GLR will probably switch to h, i, j, etc.

And this, folks, is why we love our Timewaiter kooks friends.

Here's the current banner list sorted visually. The differences can be quite subtle between banners.

Anyone know what his rational is for this?

Maybe practising procedural image generation? or just trying really desperately to avoid image filters based on MD5 checks

Ech, could you maybe spoiler the banners? I just loaded this page and was treated to several seconds of forumquake as they were loading.

BTW, thanks for collecting them!

Whoops, sorry, forgot to consider load times. Done.
mscha is actually the one who's "harvesting" the banners, so to speak; I'm just sticking them all together. Thanks!

The new N-series of banners:

I'm not sure how to help that, then.
Also, there was a Series P that appeared briefly yesterday, but only a couple banners were caught:

There are some plans to improve support for uni.xkcd.com they'll be slow coming though. There is a decent bit of infrastructure that needs improving now that we have a better idea what we'll do in the future. There is some decent standardization that comes with that and it'll allow a more functional uni.xkcd.com.

...really? Cool. I would love to be able to scroll when the comic doesn't fit on screen, preferably using text commands.

Yeah, there are a few new ones this year (the bobcat one was a repeat). None of the subtly-different-variations shenanigans from last year, though.
