Pick One Comic To Represent XKCD

Time Magazine (kinda) featured xkcd!

In the Culture section there was an article that discussed the rise of Webcomics as a medium and focused mostly on The Oatmeal, but had some examples of other popular webcomics including Dinosaur Comics, Penny Arcade and our own favorite, xkcd. For each, Time gave a sample panel and a caption underneath with a short summary of the comics and their authors.

For xkcd, they used #1130: Poll Watching, with the caption "Former NASA roboticist Randall Munroe explains politics, physics and the human condition in this wildly popular strip that began as doodles in his math notebooks".

There's currently well over a thousand xkcd comics to choose from. Which panel would you choose to represent the comic to the unwashed masses? Would you change the caption?

One of the 5 on the main page. Or something with black hat guy. Or something about raptors. There are too many to choose from.

It depends who I'm doing it for.

If they're reasonably mathsy then 55 otherwise something more like 162. Or of course that classic, 404.

Since I quite often don't understand some of the more mathsy one, or the ones about coding and such, I'd probably go for one like 150 or 695.

I'd choose either 207, 337 or 651

I'm torn between my personal favorite 137, "Dreams" and 970, "The Important Field".

pseudoidiot is the early front-runner in the winner-of-this-thread contest by virtue of actually reading the thread title. :)

Also, for choosing the only true random number.

Assumes a one panel limit. Votes for five hundred twenty-three. Involves math and romance compactly.

162 is a good candidate.

I also have a fondness for movie seating and extrapolating., as both do well to combine math and real life imo.

The one panel limit makes it hard.

A few that haven't been mentioned:
937
1083
The last panel of 655
979 (if it counts as a single panel).

But the winner for me is actually Poll Watching. Good job, Time magazine! :)

This is probably the best choice so far. It captures xkcd pretty well.

55 is my winner, with 162 in a close second. Ignoring the one-panel rule, third place is Everything. (You can obviously tell I'm a bit of a romantic.)

979 is certainly in the Honorable Mentions, though.

Click and Drag.

Just for pure sweet awesomeness.

Umwelt might also be another good one.

But now I'm just trying to be difficult.

#162 Angular Momentum. So cute, nerdy and funny at the same time.

# 1027 Pick Up Artist It generated the longest comic discussion thread and represents fully the wide spectrum of open-minded audience XKCD has drawn.

Not to mention the just, balance, fair, and rational moderation we have in this wonderful forum!

For me it would have to be #123 - Centrifugal Force. That combination of humour, sarcasm, applied mathematics and, yes, a little of the homoeroticism that Blofeld and Bond always had just sums up xkcd for me.

On edit, I am specifically picking one that represents xkcd, not its forum population or its moderation policy.

It used to always be on the front page along with 162 and the others. I think those represent XKCD fairly well. It might even be why they're there in the first place.

For me it's Movie Ages without a doubt. I love this comic, and the simple fact that the comic itself is two years old makes me feel even older.

And for those of you scoring at home that means Jurrasic Park came out 20 years ago.

16 sometimes unfortunately :( . Every time someone says "relevant xkcd" it's the same as this comic.
