What command would you like to use in real life?

Postby abrenecki » Sun Mar 23, 2008 7:31 am UTC

Not sure how interesting this'll be. If it's not, the thread wil sink into obscurity.
Can be Unix, Win32 or SQL commands. EDIT: or key combinations, menu commands or anything really. If reverse-DNS is required (ie for Mac OS X's defaults write), all inatimate objects are in org.universe.objects and all people are in org.universe.people. I'll start.

Code: Select all

$ grep socks bedroom

it's not a command, but you would not BELIEVE the amount of times I have wished life had 'edit > undo'!
or the amount of times I've THOUGHT it did :?

I just want a continuous autosave function and the ability to load any save file I wished.

I think copy/paste would be SO useful.

I'm only vaguely familiar with SQL and unix, so I have no clue if there is something like this -- is there a "pause" or... maybe "break" sort of command or key combination? That would be awesome :D

Ctrl-z would just make making mistakes a lot less problematic.

I have, in fact, while imagining hypothetical situations, tried to access the menu bar (Mac OS X user, so it's at the top of the screen) and wondered where it would be before realizing it wouldn't be there at all. I have also tried to command-click things in real life. And since we've strayed from the command line: I would so love to be able to use my Apple Remote's play/pause button on my sister.

O_O
Also, this thread could totally be in general.

Can I do that myself, or is that something only mods can do?

Delete would be very helpful, if I could eliminate people.

Plus copy+paste.

Agreed. The two commands that could probably cause the most havoc, in my opinion (assuming the world ran on Mac OS X):

Code: Select all

sudo rm
sudo defaults write
sudo nano

The ability to delete people.
Think of the MAD-related consequences.

How to displace an entire populace:

Code: Select all

Highlight [Nation]
Ctrl+A
Ctrl+X
Highlight [Landspace]
Ctrl+V

Way more successful than Vietnam.

Ctrl+F
"Weapons of Mass Destruction"
:!: Phrase Not Found

"When I was just a baby
My mother told me: "Son
Always be a good boy,
Don't ever play with guns."
But I shot a man in Reno
And then pressed Ctrl-Z
Now I'm stuck in a dead-end-job-in-some-office-with-little-prospects-and-I'd-be-better-off-in-prison
And that's what tortures me"

Bingo.

I do this a lot on these forums, I always quote someone and /agree. I just can't get to these threads fast enough >_<

Still, I'd like an autosave every 6 or 12 hours.

Shit.

You get the blue screen when you accidentally highlight [The Ocean] before pasting, and thereby consign a nation of peoples to the sea.

This post had objectionable content.

In a similar vein, the "rewind" command from zsnes.

Hell, even having it in real videogames would be an improvement.

That's not standard SQL, is it? You can't SELECT * with a GROUP BY clause, can you?
