(Easy enough, so far. Though I first wrote "1". Anyway. I probably first saw Balanced Ternary, not named as such, on a Johnny Ball programme. Weights distributed by successive powers of three (one per size) that could be placed on either side of a balance, or not at all, to enumerate an unknown mass. Placing on the unknown's side made it the negative value in the notation. Never explained as such, but a stealth education, almost, for those that did more than go "cool!" and move on!)

(The font makes "--" look a bit "-"ish. Thought it was wrong, for a moment.)

(hat's true. If you have a suggestion for a better character then we can switch it going forwards.

(Nothing obvious comes to mind. There's a forward/backward oblique. Or ¦. Or switch to L as a sorta-flip to 1(mnemonically "Less"?). Or !01 (typos ahoy!). Or <0>. Or101. But, other than those, and others, all of which have awkwardnesses of their own, nothing comes to mind...)

Re: Count in Balanced Ternary
(edited) Hang on, you missed ++0-, above.
This should be ++00
Edit2: handy hint to check, look at the (currently) "37 posts - Page 1 of 1" below. This means the next number is ++0+ (+27+9+(0x3)+1 for a matching 37. Except this time I just rolled yours up a digit, until I realised.)
