Why would someone do that to a steak?

Basically any authority on tastiness agrees. People who want their steak to be done well should never order it well done.

They can be, and they're very simple to do. Some of the images seem to be of peppers with the pointy ends cut off so they'll stand up. That works, but it does make them leak. I like to cut around the stalk, pull it and the pith out, scrape out any stray seeds left inside and then stand them up in a ring of halved chestnut mushroom caps.

They're beautifully versatile, because you can fill 'em with whatever you fancy. Diced red onion, black olives, asparagus spears, seedless grapes, more mushrooms, sweetcorn kernels, water chestnut dice, cherry tomatoes, quartered baby plum tomatoes, goats cheese, white Stilton, a big, sticky, spoonful of Epoisses, a drizzle of honey, a teaspoon of fenugreek or tarragon, whatever. Pretty quick to cook, too, so you can prep in advance and then have ready inside 40 minutes once you know what time people are arriving.

The pasta's so easy but so impressive it's almost cheating. Cook yoru pasta al dente, drain it, put it back in the pan with diced goats cheese, stir it until the cheese has melted and coated the pasta, throw in your slivers of mushroom, stir them through for 2 minutes, plate it up, sprinkle finely-chopped salad leaves lightly over them, add enough black pepper to give it some visual texture and ... yeah, that's actually it. You can even skip the salad leaves and black pepper and still have people going "oooh!" over 10 minutes' simple work.

Then you might find cooking enjoyable. You could try taking classes. I never took any, but they probably wouldn't hurt and I hear they are a great way to find a date (group assignments and you already share an interest).

The way I learned is out of necessity. I lived alone for a long while with a meager income, which meant that if I wanted to eat, I needed to cook for myself. Eventually I gained an understanding of basic cooking techniques, complementary flavor profiles and how to balance out textures. Once you have that down, there's no end to the creative things you can do.

Silly (or not) use for the Portal gun: open a portal between Australia and Scotland and pump water through it in a loop to keep Scots warm in their winter and Aussies cool in their summer.

And make sure the portals are roughly the same elevation so that there aren't 700mph winds constantly flowing through them.
